Since American Express acquired Resy in 2019, there are now more cardholder benefits centered on the reservation platform than ever before — including valuable statement credits. As such, many American Express cardholders have grown accustomed to using Resy to book their favorite restaurants.

While the dollar amount varies per card, the premise is relatively simple. First, eligible cardholders only need to enroll in the benefit once. You can book a reservation through Resy, though it’s not a requirement. Simply paying your bill at a U.S. Resy-affiliated restaurant with your enrolled card is sufficient to trigger the statement credit.

Lately, however, many cardholders are noticing a change: Some restaurants they’ve regularly booked through Resy and dined at in the past are no longer available on the platform. Here’s some insight into what’s actually happening in the background.

Which Amex Cards Have Resy Credits?

The American Express® Gold Card was the first to receive a Resy credit in 2024. Upon enrollment, cardholders receive up to $50 in statement credits from January to June and up to $50 in statement credits from July to December, available to use at U.S. Resy restaurants.

Shortly after, the top-tier cards in Amex’s Delta SkyMiles portfolio were next to get Resy credits with varying amounts (enrollment required):

And, not surprisingly, Amex’s flagship card, the Platinum Card® from American Express, got a Resy credit during its refresh last fall. It’s the most generous benefit, too: Cardholders can enroll to receive a whopping up to $400 in Resy credit annually, split into up to $100 quarterly allotments.

Why Restaurants Are Leaving Resy for OpenTable

Have you ever booked a reservation at your favorite restaurant through Resy, enjoyed the meal, and paid with your card to receive a statement credit … only to realize afterward that the restaurant is no longer participating on the platform? That means no statement credit for you. Surprise!

If so, you’re not alone. Many restaurants that were previously available on Resy are jumping ship for another platform. Most likely, it’s OpenTable, and there are several reasons for that.

An article from The New York Times in May 2025 titled, “The Five-Figure Reason Hot Restaurants Are Moving to OpenTable,” spoke with several restaurateurs across the U.S. who said they were offered cash incentives ranging from $40,000 to $95,000 to switch platforms. According to the article, these cash incentives — combined with a smoother user experience and access to dedicated customer service representatives — are driving many restaurants to switch to OpenTable.

Of course, there’s another credit card angle as well. OpenTable and Visa announced a partnership in July 2024 designed to attract top-tier cardholders, seemingly a direct competitive move against Resy and American Express. Through the OpenTable & Visa Dining Collection, eligible Visa cardholders can unlock hard-to-get restaurant reservations and access exclusive culinary events.

Hot Tip:

The Amex Platinum card and The Business Platinum Card® from American Express also have special access to top-tier restaurant reservations in New York, Los Angeles, and Miami through the Platinum Nights by Resy program.

What Amex Cardholders Should Know About Resy

Restaurants change reservation platforms quite frequently, whether to improve the booking experience or simply because it’s a better financial deal for them. It’s a trend that’s been going on for a few years, not just since Amex started offering these Resy credits.

In fact, most American Express cards include partner benefits that are often assumed to be at least partially subsidized by those partners — rather than Amex itself. In the case of Resy, however, the dynamic is a little different since Amex owns the platform.

We can speculate that Amex is footing the bill here to incentivize cardholders to engage with Resy and encourage increased spend at restaurants that pay to use the platform.

Ultimately, Amex cardholders who plan to use their next slate of Resy credits should always check the platform right before dining to ensure no last-minute swaps have occurred. If you’ve booked and dined at a Resy restaurant in the past but that location is no longer participating in the platform, now you know why.

Final Thoughts

Resy credits are a compelling perk for many American Express cardholders, but their long-term value will depend on how well the platform can retain restaurants and stay competitive. On a personal level, how you value these credits depends on your favorite restaurant continuing to participate.

As competition between Resy and OpenTable intensifies, the constant changes in the restaurant reservation landscape are worth watching out for, and cardholders need to be intentional about checking which platform a restaurant uses before relying on a statement credit.
