Frontier Airlines is an American low-cost carrier, similar to the likes of Spirit Airlines. This airline is the eighth largest in the U.S. and was founded in 1994. Unlike many other airlines, Frontier Airlines was essentially a concoction from the private equity industry designed to fill in the aviation demand gap from Denver as Continental Airlines scaled back operations.

Fast forward to today, Frontier Airlines has a fleet of around 100 aircraft, and the company is a billion-dollar player in the cutthroat, competitive U.S. aviation industry. If you find yourself flying on Frontier Airlines from time to time and end up banking a decent chunk of miles, you’re going to want to follow this guide on how you can redeem them for great value.

We’ll first talk about the pros and cons of Frontier Airlines’ frequent flyer program, Frontier Miles. Then, we’ll break down a definitive list of the best ways to redeem your Frontier Airlines miles. Lastly, we’ll close out with the actual process of redeeming miles, including all the rules and fees associated with miles redemption.

The Pros and Cons of Frontier Airlines Frontier Miles

Frontier Airlines isn’t exactly the best frequent flyer program to hold your miles in. Frontier Airlines miles are worth around 1.1 cents per mile according to our valuations, and that’s honestly being quite generous. The reason why the valuations are so low is that Frontier Airlines’ cash fares are generally so dirt cheap anyway.

Additionally, there aren’t very many ways to use your Frontier Airlines miles, as it doesn’t have any airline partners and only a couple of redemption partners. However, redeeming Frontier Miles is generally pretty easy.

As you’ll see, the biggest value proposition is redeeming your miles for high cash-value tickets during niche high season events. It’s not the most glamorous way to travel, but when used properly, Frontier Miles can save you hundreds and even thousands of dollars on revenue tickets.

The 10 Best Ways to Use Your Frontier Miles

Frontier Airlines’ frequent flyer program is called Frontier Miles, and it is one of the single-handedly worst frequent flyer programs in the world. This is best demonstrated by the fact that Frontier Miles has the worst mileage expiration policy in the world, with its miles expiring only after 180 days.

This sounds pretty terrible, but the silver lining is that you can extend Frontier Miles with any qualifying activity. There are only a few ways to use Frontier Miles, and these are:

  • Travel on Frontier Airlines
  • Magazine subscriptions at 0.3 cents per mile
  • Hotel bookings at 0.5 cents per mile through Frontier’s booking portal

As a general rule of thumb, using Frontier Miles for options 2 and 3 is a bad idea, as the value you get is even lower than what you’d get for flights.

For this reason, we’ll be directing all of our redemptions on those which get you the most value. Let’s get into it!

Fly Frontier Airlines One-Way Between Cancún and the U.S. (From 15,000 Miles)

Frontier Airlines operates numerous international flights. Although these flights aren’t long-haul flights like Singapore Airlines or Emirates, you can still use them for travel outside the U.S. Our first redemption is to book travel between the U.S. and Cancún.

The price of these tickets vary, but the amount they vary is quite drastic for 1 reason: Spring Break. A one-way flight on Frontier Airlines can run more than $500 during Spring Break, which is absolutely ridiculous. Luckily, you can redeem Frontier Airlines miles to save a massive chunk of change.

Frontier Airlines operates many nonstop flights to Cancún, which is great news for travelers across the U.S. Here are some great example routes you can take:

  • Cincinnati (CVG) – Cancún (CUN) one-way from 15,000 miles + ~$33.70 in taxes and fees [cash ticket prices range from $180-$560]
  • Cleveland (CLE) – Cancún (CUN) one-way from 15,000 miles + ~$33.70 in taxes and fees [cash ticket prices range from $168-$393]
  • Denver (DEN) – Cancún (CUN) one-way from 15,000 miles + ~$33.70 in taxes and fees [cash ticket prices range from $180 – $567]
  • Newark (EWR) – Cancún (CUN) one-way from 15,000 miles + ~$33.70 in taxes and fees [cash ticket prices range from $96-$391]
  • St. Louis (STL) – Cancún (CUN) one-way from 15,000 miles + ~$33.70 in taxes and fees [cash ticket prices range from $153-$573]

Hot Tip: When you’re looking for award flights with Frontier Airlines, try to book Value level tickets that are significantly cheaper. These same flights would cost 25,000 miles in the Standard level and 27,500 miles in the Last Seat (Elite Only) level.

Fly Frontier Airlines One-Way Between Jamaica and the Northeast (From 15,000 Miles)

Jamaica Rafting

Did you know that you can fly to Jamaica from the U.S. on Frontier Airlines? Because this is somewhat of a rare destination on Frontier Airlines, this route seems to be extremely popular, with ticket prices to reflect that.

In the entire calendar year, we didn’t find any one-way tickets cheaper than $226, which is an astonishing amount of money, considering Frontier routinely sells plane tickets for $20-$30!

As a result, you can redeem 15,000 miles at the Value level, 25,000 miles at the Standard level, and 27,500 miles at the Last Seat (Elite Only) level for one-way flights to Jamaica. Round-trip tickets are simply double the cost of a one-way ticket.

Here is a great example route you can take:

  • Philadelphia (PHL) – Montego Bay (MBJ) one-way from 15,000 miles + ~$49.60 in taxes and fees [cash ticket prices range from $226-$606]

Fly Frontier Airlines One-Way Between the Midwest and Punta Cana (From 15,000 Miles)

Punta Cana

If you’re looking to escape the blistering cold of the Midwest (or if you really just want to go somewhere with a beautiful beach), then Frontier Airlines has you covered. Here are some great example routes you can take:

  • Chicago (ORD) – Punta Cana (PUJ) one-way from 15,000 miles + ~$36.90 in taxes and fees [cash ticket prices range from $157-$578]
  • Cleveland (CLE) – Punta Cana (PUJ) one-way from 15,000 miles + ~$36.90 in taxes and fees [cash ticket prices range from $182-$312]
  • St. Louis (STL) – Punta Cana (PUJ) one-way from 15,000 miles + ~$36.90 in taxes and fees [cash ticket prices range from $192-$302]

Fly Frontier Airlines One-Way Between El Salvador and the U.S. (From 15,000 Miles)

El Salvador Church

This particular redemption is so new that Frontier Airlines hasn’t added it to its award chart. Frontier Airlines is beginning its first-ever flight service to El Salvador on June 18, 2020, and this represents another opportunity to redeem Frontier Miles for pricey international travel.

Although the award chart doesn’t stipulate prices yet, we’ve done the upfront research, and it currently is priced at 15,000 miles for Value level redemptions, 25,000 miles for Standard level redemptions, and 27,500 miles for Last Seat (Elite Only) redemptions.

Here are some great example routes you can take:

  • Baltimore (BWI) – San Salvador (SAL) one-way from 15,000 miles + ~$29 in taxes and fees [cash ticket prices range from $79-$159]
  • Ontario (ONT) – San Salvador (SAL) one-way from 15,000 miles + ~$29 in taxes and fees [cash ticket prices range from $129-$289]

Fly Frontier Airlines One-Way Between Guatemala and the U.S. (From 15,000 Miles)

Guatemala
Guatemala’s charm is absolutely a reason you need to visit the Central American country. Image Credit: SL-Photography via Shutterstock

Frontier Airlines is also beginning international service to the Central American country of Guatemala on June 19, 2020. The best part about this is yet another ability to redeem an otherwise limited mileage currency for interesting flights outside the U.S.

These flights are priced one-way at 15,000 miles for Value tickets, 25,000 miles for Standard tickets, and 27,500 miles for Last Seat (Elite Only) tickets. Here are some great example routes you can take:

  • Miami (MIA) – Guatemala City (GUA) one-way from 15,000 miles + ~$29 in taxes and fees [cash ticket prices range from $69-$289]
  • Ontario (ONT) – Guatemala City (GUA) one-way from 15,000 miles + ~$29 in taxes and fees [cash ticket prices range from $129-$289]

Although the cash value of these flights isn’t as high as the first redemption we talked about (Spring Break flights to Cancún), it’s still a solid way to use Frontier Airlines miles for award travel.

Fly Frontier Airlines One-Way From the Northeast to the Dominican Republic (From 15,000 Miles)

Santiago Dominican Republic
This church is one of the monuments in Santiago, the second-largest city in the Dominican Republic. Image Credit: chriss73 via Shutterstock

Believe it or not, Frontier Airlines has a very specific route advantage for flights to/from the Dominican Republic. Normally, the major U.S. airlines offer flights mostly to 2 airports: Punta Cana (PUJ) and Santo Domingo (SDQ).

In this case, Frontier Airlines is beginning a nonstop service on May 28, 2020, to Santiago de los Caballeros, which is the second-largest city in the Dominican Republic. As you can imagine, these nonstop flights are highly anticipated, which means that cash tickets will be consistently high.

Here is the example redemption you can make:

  • Newark (EWR) – Santiago de los Caballeros (STI) one-way from 15,000 miles + ~$36.90 in taxes and fees [cash ticket prices range from $118-$297]

Fly Frontier Airlines One-Way from the Pacific Northwest to Florida (From 10,000 Miles)

Pensacola Florida

One of the best ways to redeem your Frontier Miles is to fly from the Northwestern U.S. to the Southeastern U.S. Although there are no nonstop flights, a connection in Denver will be a good way to break up your flights into smaller pieces.

There are tons of different cities to fly to/from in both Florida and the Pacific Northwest, but check out these 3 example routes:

  • Seattle (SEA) – Denver (DEN) – Fort Myers (RSW) one-way from 10,000 miles + ~$5.60 in taxes and fees [cash ticket prices range from $129-$468]
  • Seattle (SEA) – Denver (DEN) – Pensacola (PNS) one-way from 10,000 miles + ~$5.60 in taxes and fees [cash ticket prices range from $127-$431]
  • Spokane (GEG) – Denver (DEN) – Orlando (MCO) one-way from 10,000 miles + ~$5.60 in taxes and fees [cash ticket prices range from $127-$236]

As a reminder, Value level tickets will cost only 10,000 miles. If you find a Standard level award, you’ll pay 20,000 miles. With Last Seat (Elite Only) tickets, you’ll pay 22,500 miles.

Fly Frontier Airlines One-Way from the West Coast to Norfolk (From 10,000 Miles)

Norfolk Virginia

Another great way to book memorable domestic trips is from the West Coast to Northeastern U.S. For example, Norfolk is the second-largest city in Virginia, and it is famous for its history. It was founded in 1682 and has served as a crucial military and transportation point. It houses the largest naval base in the world and is bordered by the beautiful Chesapeake Bay.

Here are some great example routes you can take:

  • Los Angeles (LAX) – Denver (DEN) – Norfolk (ORF) one-way from 10,000 miles + ~$5.60 in taxes and fees [cash ticket prices range from $134-$180]
  • San Francisco (SFO) – Denver (DEN) – Norfolk (ORF) one-way from 10,000 miles + ~$5.60 in taxes and fees [cash ticket prices range from $142-$185]
  • Santa Ana (SNA) – Denver (DEN) – Norfolk (ORF) one-way from 10,000 miles + ~$5.60 in taxes and fees [cash ticket prices range from $132-$202]

Fly Frontier Airlines Transcontinental One-Way from the Northeast to the Pacific Northwest (From 10,000 Miles)

Seattle Market

If you’re originating in the Northeast, 1 great vacation idea would be to venture to the Pacific Northwest. Washington has deep Native American roots and Seattle’s unique culture (in a good way!) can’t be missed.

Seattle has great food, awesome weather during the summer, beautiful water, and phenomenal attractions. That being said, here is a great example route you should jump on ASAP!

  • Hartford (BDL) – Denver (DEN) – Seattle (SEA) one-way from 10,000 miles + ~$5.60 in taxes and fees [cash ticket prices range from $172-$312]
  • Pittsburgh (PIT) – Denver (DEN) – Seattle (SEA) one-way from 10,000 miles + ~$5.60 in taxes and fees [cash ticket prices range from $183-$298]
  • Portland (PWM) – Denver (DEN) – Seattle (SEA) one-way from 10,000 miles + ~$5.60 in taxes and fees [cash ticket prices range from $124-$210]

Fly Frontier Airlines Nonstop One-Way from Denver to the Northeast (From 10,000 Miles)

Portland Maine

Frontier Airlines’ hub base is in Denver, which means that many of its flights depart to/from Denver. If you’re a resident of Denver, this is great news for you. Frontier Airlines offers a no-frills service with an utterly unbeatable price tag. If you plan on checking out the Northeast directly from Denver, you’ll be pleased to find that you can get some great value.

The Northeast is one of the most beautiful parts of the U.S. The nature, scenery, and old-school feel to it simply can’t be replicated anywhere else. You’ll pay 10,000 miles one-way for Value level tickets, 20,000 miles for Standard level tickets, and 22,500 miles for Last Seat (Elite Only) level tickets.

At the moment, cash ticket prices are extremely cheap due to the adverse destruction that COVID-19 has wrought on the commercial aviation industry. These flights are currently running at a rock-bottom $26 one-way, but these prices will subside when the coronavirus pandemic is behind us. Nonetheless, here are some great example routes you can take:

  • Denver (DEN) – Albany (ALB) one-way from 10,000 miles + ~$5.60 in taxes and fees [cash ticket prices range from $126-$306]
  • Denver (DEN) – Boston (BOS) one-way from 10,000 miles + ~$5.60 in taxes and fees [cash ticket prices range from $101-$131]
  • Denver (DEN) – Buffalo (BUF) one-way from 10,000 miles + ~$5.60 in taxes and fees [cash ticket prices range from $69-$136]
  • Denver (DEN) – Burlington (BTV) one-way from 10,000 miles + ~$5.60 in taxes and fees [cash ticket prices range from $104-$160]
  • Denver (DEN) – Pittsburgh (PIT) one-way from 10,000 miles + ~$5.60 in taxes and fees [cash ticket prices range from $64-$211]
  • Denver (DEN) – Portland (PWM) one-way from 10,000 miles + ~$5.60 in taxes and fees [cash ticket prices range from $111-$230]

Using Your Frontier Miles

Redeeming Frontier Miles is a straightforward exercise. The award availability you see online shows what you can book. So, if you don’t see it online, you probably can’t book it with miles.

To redeem your Frontier Miles, you’ll need to perform a revenue search and then change/toggle it to a miles search. After that, you’ll be prompted to log in. After you’ve logged in, you can view the award availability.

Follow these steps to redeem your Frontier Miles:

  1. Visit the booking page of Frontier Airlines’ website.
  2. Enter your flight information.
  3. Click Show Flights.
  4. Click the toggle slider button on the top-right side above the Daily/Month View boxes.
  5. You’ll see mileage prices pop up.
  6. Select your desired flight.
  7. Scroll down and click Continue
  8. You’ll be asked to log in. Log in using your frequent flyer information.
  9. Enter your traveler information and pay with the booking in miles.

Frontier Airlines Award Charts

Frontier Airlines’ award chart is pretty simple. Since its route network is limited to a handful of countries, you’ll see a region-based award chart as shown below:

Frontier Airlines Award Chart
Frontier Airlines Award Chart. Image Credit: Frontier Airlines

The cost of your flight will be dependent on the area you’re traveling to, the area you’re traveling from, and the award level you book. You’ll also pay award redemption fees in the following structure depending on how far in advance you book your flight.

  • $0 if booked 180+ days before travel
  • $15 if booked 21-179 days before travel
  • $50 if booked 7-20 days before travel
  • $75 if booked <6 days before travel

You can avoid award redemption fees if you:

  • Have the Frontier Airlines World Mastercard®
  • Have Frontier Miles elite status
  • Book early
  • Are a travel companion of a cardholder or someone with elite status

Frontier Miles Partners

Frontier Airlines has 3 partners:

  • MagsForMiles — you can purchase magazine subscriptions with Frontier Miles, but the value is poor at 0.3-0.35 cents per mile
  • Points.com — you can purchase or gift Frontier Miles through Points.com

Awards Bookable Online vs. Phone

All Frontier Airlines award tickets are bookable online. However, you can also book by calling 801-401-9000 if you’re willing to pay an additional award service fee of $25.

Award Redemption Rules

If you cancel an award ticket, you won’t pay a fee if you booked a Economy, Premium, or Business bundle.

There are 3 levels of award tickets:

  • Value Awards — these are equal to “saver” level tickets, and they are the least abundant
  • Standard Awards — these are equal to “everyday” level tickets, and they are more abundant than Value Awards
  • Last Seat Awards (Elite Only) — these are the highest level award tickets, and they can be redeemed as long as there’s an available seat on the plane

How to Boost Your Frontier Airlines Frontier Miles

There are a lot of different ways to earn Frontier Miles, the least of which is to actually fly on Frontier Airlines. For example, the Frontier Airlines World card is one of the ways you can earn Frontier Miles quickly with regular credit card spend.

Frontier Airlines also has several unique partners which can help you earn more miles.

The only way to earn Frontier Miles is by transferring hotel points. You can transfer Marriott Bonvoy points at a 3:1 ratio with a 5,000-mile bonus for every 60,000 points transferred to Frontier Miles. This is generally not a good idea since the value of Frontier Miles is low. You generally want to do this only if you’re short of what you need for a redemption.

Final Thoughts

Frontier Airlines Frontier Miles is a limited frequent flyer program. With no other airline partners, much of the value goes out the window, especially when you’re thinking about premium cabin tickets in business or first class.

However, if you find yourself needing to take domestic travel or even regional international flights to places like Mexico or the Dominican Republic, Frontier Miles can prove very handy.

As an example, flying to Cancún during Spring Break will cost you a pretty penny (more than $500 for one-way tickets). If you plan far enough in advance, you can end up paying almost nothing for these tickets by using your Frontier Miles.

There are other fantastic ways to redeem outlined above, and we hope we provided you with some inspiration on some of the best ways to redeem Frontier Miles. None of these redemptions feature glamorous first class seats, but your wallet will thank you when you avoid paying cash for these tickets.
