• When you need to prevent your miles from expiring
• When you can transfer points but want to save your transferable points

What This Guide Is

When we talk about buying points, we’re usually talking about buying miles from the airline directly or from a permitted airline partner, such as Points.com.

You’ll quickly notice that many airlines have odd rules that limit the pool of people who can buy points. Some of these rules are:

• You must visit an airline’s office in person to buy points
• You can only buy miles if you’re earned at least 1 mile with the frequent flyer program
• You’re almost always limited in the number of points you can buy

These are typically policies used by more obscure airlines, and the airlines offering mainstream points such as United MileagePlus don’t have many restrictions.

What This Guide Is Not

Some companies and individuals sell or broker airline miles and hotel points. This is in clear violation of loyalty programs’ terms and conditions.

Participating in either the sell or buy side of this can result not only in your account termination but also in being blacklisted from future participation in the loyalty program.

The short of it? It’s not worth it to buy miles “cheaper” through other companies. The only way you should be buying airline miles and hotel points is from the airline/hotel chain itself or through an official third-party seller such as Points.com.

How to Buy Airline Miles

As mentioned above, generally speaking — the process of buying airline miles looks like this:

1. Visit the airlines’ website (or Points.com)
2. Click the appropriate button to purchase points or miles
3. Log in with your frequent flyer information
4. Use your credit card to purchase the points
5. The points get deposited in your account

Seems pretty straightforward, right? Let’s talk about Points.com a little more.

Which Airlines and Hotels Sell Points via Points.com?

Points.com is essentially an official third-party company that processes point purchases.

Why does this matter? The short answer is that you usually don’t get bonus points for travel purchases when you buy miles from an airline via Points.com.

The reason why this is important is that Points.com isn’t an airline, nor does it usually code as travel. This means that you couldn’t get the 3x points on the Chase Sapphire Reserve^® or the 5x points on The Platinum Card^® from American Express, for example. Note that starting January 1, 2021, the Amex Platinum card is limiting the 5x earning on up to $500,000 on travel per calendar year.

Can I Get Bonus Points From Points.com Purchases?

The short answer to this question is that you will not earn bonus points on the bonus categories of airfare/hotel/travel when purchasing points on Points.com.
