Garuda Indonesia has a very generous free checked luggage allowance across all cabin classes, right up to 110 pounds (50 kg) for first class passengers.

For most destinations, Garuda works on a weight system, so you can take as many bags as you like as long as they don’t exceed the maximum weight allowance combined.

However, U.S. routes work on a “piece system” for economy and business class (allowing 2 pieces of luggage) and the standard weight system for first class passengers. If you need to take even more luggage, you can save 10% by booking online or with Garuda’s call center in advance.

Garuda Indonesia Carry-on Allowance

1 personal item: Undisclosed
1 standard carry-on bag: FREE

Size and Weight Restrictions

  • Personal: Undisclosed
  • Standard: 22 x 14 x 9 inches (56 x 36 x 23 cm) not exceeding total measurements of 45 inches (115 cm) or weight of 15 pounds (7 kg). Excluding economy class on CRJ and ATR aircraft: 16 x 13.3 x 6.7 inches (41 cm x 34 cm x 17 cm) not exceeding total measurements of 36 inches (92 cm) or weight of 15 pounds (7 kg).

Lap Infant Carry-on Policy

  • When traveling with a lap infant, a collapsible stroller, carrying basket, or car seat can be taken into the cabin with a maximum weight of 22 pounds (10 kg).

Stroller Gate Check Policy

  • A stroller can be checked into the hold at the gate in addition to your standard checked luggage allowance.

Garuda Indonesia Checked Baggage Allowance

Garuda Indonesia has a weight allowance system for most destinations (apart from the U.S.), so you are not limited to how many pieces you can take as checked luggage — though each piece cannot exceed 70 pounds (32 kg).

Domestic Journeys

  • First Class: 88 pounds (40 kg)
  • Business: 66 pounds (30 kg)
  • Economy: 44 pounds (20 kg)

An infant without a seat can check 22 pounds (10 kg) of luggage when traveling in economy or business, and 44 pounds (20 kg) of luggage when traveling in first class.

Hi, I am planning to travel from Bali to Lombok with you’re airline on the bigger plane (737-800), and wanted to check the maximum length for a surfboard. My board is 8 ft (2.44m) including bag. Thank you Dara

Catherine Luther

August 09, 2019

Hi Dara,

Please be aware that we are not Garuda Airlines – we are UpgradedPoints.com, so we cannot confirm 100%. The information on the airline’s baggage page states that on larger planes, surfboards can measure up to 300cm/3 metres.

I will be traveling from Jakarta to Lombok, do you know if I can split the checked baggage of 20kgs into 2 pieces? Thx

Yes, this route would allow you to split the 20 kgs between 2 bags.

We are scuba divers. For domestic Garuda flight, economy class, what’s the luggage allowance? Thanks

Catherine Luther

August 23, 2019

Hi Perry,

Flying in Economy, passengers are permitted to bring 20 kg of luggage as their checked allowance. There is also a special additional allowance of 23 kg for passengers bringing sports equipment such as scuba equipment.

I am travelling from Bali to Australia. How much does it cost per kg for extra luggage as I would like to bring an oversized piece back from here.

Catherine Luther

September 14, 2019

Hi Tanya,

According to their baggage calculator, extra weight is charged at around $27 USD per kilogram from Bali to Australia.

Ela

September 24, 2019

The information that is provided on this website about extra luggage weight fees for domestic flights is incorrect and misleading. According to the information from this website, for 15kg extra weight on a flight from Bali to Jakarta with the ticket purchased at $70 I should pay for excess luggage $15.75, while I paid almost $80. On Garuda website they have charges list per destination. For DPS-SUB each extra 1kg costs roughly $5. Please update your website so other people will not be surprised at the counter as much as I was today.

Hi Charlie,

Thai Airways reported that the affected laptops could not be brought on board at all, unless the battery had been replaced already. Please be aware that we are not Thai Airways so to confirm this, you will need to contact Thai Airways directly.

Garuda does not disclose its oversized luggage charges so you will need to contact the airline directly to enquire.

Jarrod West

February 29, 2020

Hi Amber,

I cannot say definitively, but it might fit. You also might be subject to oversized baggage fees so keep that in mind as well.

My wife and daughter are looking to book a Garuda flight from Bali to Jakarta, but your baggage allowance is only 20kgs. They will have 30kgs each, so an extra 20kgs on top of the combined 40kgs allowance. What would be the extra cost of 20kg from Bali to Jakarta?

Jarrod West

September 09, 2020

Hi David,

According to this chart, the fee for this route is 127,600 IDR (about $8.63) per kg. So, for 20 extra kgs, would be $172.60.

Thanks for reading!

Qatar Airways does not publish its policy on seafarer baggage, so you will need to contact the airline directly to inquire.
