Travel can be exciting but may also present unexpected situations, such as illness, trip cancellations, or lost baggage. These incidents can put a damper on your trip and cause financial loss. Travel insurance, such as the policies offered by HTH Travel Insurance, can give you peace of mind and protect you financially from unforeseen circumstances while you travel.

HTH Travel Insurance has provided travel insurance policies for more than 25 years and has a solid reputation for supporting travelers. Its policies are underwritten by Nationwide Mutual Insurance, which offers the backing of an A.M. Best Excellent financial strength rating. You can get travel insurance policies from HTH Travel Insurance that offer trip cancellation and interruption, emergency medical, emergency evacuation, trip delay, baggage loss, and other key benefits.

Read on to learn about HTH Travel Insurance policies, including what’s covered, how much the benefits offer, and the services offered. We’ll also review how its policies compare to the coverage you can get from travel credit cards and other travel insurance providers.

Why Get Travel Insurance?

Travel insurance offers protection from loss from unexpected circumstances and can provide you with medical coverage if an accident or illness occurs while you’re on your trip.

These are some of the reasons to consider getting travel insurance:

  • You have nonrefundable prepayments or deposits that you’d lose if you canceled your trip.
  • Your health care coverage doesn’t extend to the destination you’re visiting or activities you’ve planned, but you want medical coverage.
  • Your destination’s health care is lacking and you might need medical evacuation to adequate facilities in an emergency.
  • Your itinerary has multiple points where things could go wrong, such as multiple flights or destinations that increase the chances of being delayed or missing a connection.
Bottom Line:

You might not need travel insurance for every trip, such as domestic travel with little to no nonrefundable expenses and nationwide health care coverage. However, travel insurance is a good idea if you have significant funds on the line or you need medical coverage.

Why Purchase Travel Insurance From HTH Travel Insurance?

Purchasing a travel insurance policy requires trust and assurance that the travel insurance company will help when you need it. It’s always a good idea to check a travel insurance company’s reviews and ratings before you purchase a policy. HTH offers reassurance with a long history of traveler support and good customer service ratings.

Founded in 1997, HTH Worldwide Insurance Services has been in business for more than 25 years and has an A- Better Business Bureau rating. HTH has a 4.24 out of 5 rating on the travel insurance comparison website Squaremouth, with more than 32,000 policies sold on the site and an average of 0.2% negative reviews.

Nationwide Mutual Insurance backs HTH’s travel insurance policies and has an A (Excellent) financial strength rating from financial rating company A.M. Best. You can trust HTH to offer reliable travel insurance policies backed with the financial strength to be there when you need it.

HTH offers travel medical, expat medical, and trip protection plans. Benefits available with these plans include emergency medical, medical evacuation, trip interruption and delay, trip cancellation, and baggage protection coverage.

TripProtector Preferred

TripProtector Preferred offers HTH Travel Insurance’s highest level of coverage. This policy is good for international travel or any particularly costly trip that you want the best protection for. We were quoted $88.65 for a 25-year-old visiting France for a week. With this plan, you’re covered for 200% of your trip cost for trip interruption and 100% of your trip cost for trip cancellation. Trip delays offer up to $2,000 per person and $1,000 per person for missed connections. Medical coverage is excellent, with up to $500,000 per person in primary medical coverage, which means you don’t have to go through other insurance before this plan will pay out. There’s $1 million per person in emergency evacuation benefits and $100,000 per person for accidental death and dismemberment.

TripProtector Economy

TripProtector Economy is the lowest-priced plan, and we were quoted $52.63 for a 25-year-old visiting France for a week. Like the Preferred plan, the Economy plan covers 100% of your trip cost for trip cancellations but only 125% for trip interruptions. Delays and missed connections also have lower coverage at $500 per person for delays and $250 per person for missed connections. The medical coverage is distinctly lower, offering just $75,000 per person in secondary coverage, which requires that you file a claim with other applicable insurance before you use your travel insurance policy’s medical coverage. The plan’s $500,000 in emergency evacuation coverage is good but not as good as the $1 million offered by HTH’s other plans.

TripProtector Classic

TripProtector Classic strikes a balance between Preferred and Economy, with a $65.60 quote for a 25-year-old visiting France for a week and coverage levels that land between the insurer’s other plans. It covers 100% of trip cancellations and 150% of trip interruptions. Delays are covered for up to $1,000 per person and $500 per person for missed connections. There’s $250,000 per person for primary emergency medical coverage, which doesn’t require making a claim with other insurance policies first. You’re covered for up to $1 million in emergency evacuation benefits and $50,000 per person for accidental death and dismemberment.

Hot Tip:

Some travel insurance companies exclude COVID-19 from insurance coverage, but HTH plans offer coverage for medically necessary healthcare services related to testing, diagnosing, and treating COVID-19. Some plans offer up to $50 per day of quarantine benefits for up to 10 days.

How HTH Travel Insurance Compares — Summary

You can get a good travel insurance policy from HTH Travel Insurance, but it’s still smart to compare your options. Consider how HTH Travel Insurance compares to competitors and travel credit cards that offer travel insurance.

HTH Travel Insurance vs. Credit Card Travel Insurance

You can pay for an HTH Travel Insurance policy, but you may already have travel protection benefits available from a travel credit card that offers travel insurance as a complimentary benefit.

Credit card travel insurance may include car rental collision waivers, trip cancellation coverage, or emergency medical and evacuation benefits. It’s handy if you plan to pay for your travel expenses using a credit card that offers travel protection. However, credit card travel insurance is generally not as comprehensive as travel insurance policies, or it has lower limits that may not provide enough coverage for your trip.

Let’s see how HTH Travel Insurance’s best policy compares to the travel protection offered by The Platinum Card® from American Express and Chase Sapphire Reserve®. Both of these cards offer excellent credit card travel protections.

The travel protections offered by either credit card may be adequate for some trips. For example, if you’re taking a trip that costs less than $10,000, you’re fully covered for trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage with the card protection. The car rental damage protection is superior with the credit cards, too.

However, if you’re primarily considering travel insurance for medical coverage, the credit card benefits are severely lacking compared to what you can get from HTH Travel Insurance. The Amex Platinum card doesn’t offer emergency medical coverage, though it does offer unlimited emergency evacuation benefits if you arrange the evacuation using the Premium Global Assist Hotline. The Chase Sapphire Reserve card only offers $2,500 in emergency medical benefits and $100,000 in emergency evacuation coverage. Compare that to HTH Travel Insurance TripProtector Preferred’s $500,000 in primary emergency medical coverage and $2 million in emergency evacuation benefits. HTH Travel Insurance clearly offers greater benefits if you’re concerned about medical costs or emergencies while traveling.

A good strategy is to use your credit card with travel protections to pay for your trip costs. This way, you can use your benefits if needed, but you can also get a travel insurance policy that covers gaps, such as emergency medical benefits.

HTH Travel Insurance vs. Other Travel Insurance Companies

Though HTH Travel Insurance offers good coverage at a reasonable cost, you should always compare costs and coverage among at least 3 options. That way, you can be sure you’re not paying more than necessary for the travel insurance benefits you want.

We used Squaremouth to compare HTH Travel Insurance policies to those offered by other travel insurance companies.

As with the quotes we used to get prices for HTH Travel Insurance’s policies, we used these details to build a sample trip on Squaremouth:

  • 1 traveler
  • Age 25
  • Traveling to France 1 month from now
  • Trip cost of $1,500
  • Initial trip deposit paid within the last 24 hours
  • State of residence is Texas

We adjusted the results to only include policies that have at least as much coverage as what HTH Travel Insurance’s TripProtector Classic policy has:

  • COVID-19 coverage
  • Minimum $250,000 emergency medical benefit with primary coverage
  • Minimum $1 million emergency medical benefit
  • 100% trip cancellation
  • 150% trip interruption

The competitors had almost the same coverage, except USI Affinity Travel Insurance Services Diamond and Seven Corners Trip Protection Choice offered $500,000 in primary emergency medical coverage. That’s double what HTH Travel Insurance TripProtector Classic offers.

None of the competitors offered a lower cost than the HTH TripProtector Classic plan, which was $65.60. However, USI Diamond and Seven Corners Trip Protection Choice offered superior emergency medical coverage.

HTH Travel Insurance competitors on Squaremouth

HTH Travel Insurance TripProtector Classic can offer savings if you’re satisfied with $250,000 in primary emergency medical coverage. However, if you’re traveling to an area with particularly high medical costs, it might be worth it to pay about $10 to $15 more to double your primary emergency medical coverage to $500,000.

Bottom Line:

Among the major coverage areas of trip cancellation and interruption, emergency medical coverage, and emergency evacuation, HTH Travel Insurance holds up to competitors — with the exception of greater emergency medical benefits offered by some.
