Allegiant Air Baggage Fees & Tips To Cover The Expenses

While Allegiant Air offers budget base ticket pricing, you’re likely to owe more than you might expect in baggage fees.  For example, Allegiant charges a fee for standard carry-on luggage, which increases the longer you wait to purchase.

It’s also important to note the max weight for a checked bag is 40lbs (compared to the general average of 50lbs) and the same time sensitive fees apply for purchasing checked baggage.

Allegiant Air’s baggage policy isn’t overly confusing, it’s just pricey.  Essentially, for the cheapest possible outcome, know the number of bags you’re planning to bring (keeping in mind the decreased weight allowance) and pay for them at your initial booking!

Lap Infant Carry-On Policy

  • 1 diaper bag: additional item allowed on the aircraft, in addition to the free baggage allowance

Stroller Check Policy

  • Each fare-paying passenger is allowed to take one car seat and/or stroller to the boarding gate to be checked free of charge.

Allegiant Checked Baggage Allowance

Can I Pre-pay for Baggage?

Allegiant Air does allow passengers the ability to pre-pay for luggage online or via the mobile app.

Here are the ways you can pre-pay:

Credit Cards That Reimburse You For Checked Bag Fees

Allegiant Air requires you to pay for every checked bag, but you can offset that cost with one of the cards below.

Capital One® VentureOne® Rewards Credit Card - This no annual fee card comes with a 20,000 mile welcome bonus (worth $200) once you spend $1,000 on purchases within the first 3 months from account opening. When you use your card for travel purchases (e.g. baggage fees), use your miles to pay off all, or part of, your statement! This is why we like this card.
Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card - The "big brother" card to the VentureOne® with a larger 50,000 welcome bonus (worth $500) once you spend $3,000 on purchases within the first 3 months from account opening and you'll earn 10X miles per $1 spent across thousands of hotels.

Exclusions & Waivers

Active duty U.S. military personnel, military veterans, members of the National Guard, military reserve and their dependents: 1 standard carry-on bag free and 3 checked bags free (must weigh less than 100lbs & not exceed dimensions of 80 linear inches).

Is the above picture stating that even if my carry on is the right size, if the handle comes at the top (with the suitcase vertical) it will cost me extra money?

    • Hi Cheryl, we’re not quite sure what you’re asking – the featured image is simply an image for the purpose of getting the point across that this is an article about baggage fees.

That being said, when measuring your case, the dimensions include all wheels and handles, with the handle in the collapsed position. It’s very likely Allegiant will make you fit your bag in their sizer before considering it a carry-on that will fit so I would either call them directly to inquire or air on the side of caution. Hope this helps.

Is there any way to change that you want to have a checked bag when you already selected carry on when you booked the flight?

    • Hi Stephanie, have you tried logging in on allegiantair.com and accessing your flight confirmation that way? I can’t confirm with 100% certainty but there may be a way to add baggage from that angle. (You may have to create an account if you haven’t already…)

Otherwise, we suggest contacting Allegiant’s Customer Service directly at 1 (702) 505-8888. Hope this helps!

  3. If my bags are overweight I know there will be a fee. Can I use cash to pay for it? Or does it have to be a credit card?

    • Catherine Luther · April 12, 2019 · Reply

      Hi Sarah,

Allegiant Air doesn’t specify on their website if they accept cash payments for baggage fees. Many airlines only accept card payments, so we recommend you contact their Customer Service department on (702) 505-8888 to check their policy for the airport you’re departing from.

Can you pay to check baggage at the airport with cash or do I need a credit card?

    • Hi Heather, it’s become increasingly more common for airlines to refuse cash as a form of payment at the airport. Unfortunately, this varies from airline to airline and from airport to airport, so the only way to confirm is to call Allegiant’s customer service line (1-702-505-8888 from the U.S.) and inquire with them directly.

  5. Hi Erin

The carry on maximum baggage dimensions are 9✖️14✖️22.
My case is 10✖️14✖️22. How strict is Allegiante air with over size carry on and what re the over size fees? I paid $30 for the carry on option.

    • Hey Tim, Allegiant is notorious for being pretty darned strict… BUT I’ve never heard of them taking out a tape measure. If you can shove that bag in the little sizing frame then you get to take it with you. Some people’s become just a little more compact taking into account give at the zippers. Good luck!

One person on my itinerary is not able to make the flight any longer. Is there any way we can still use the checked bag I purchased that’s associated with her name but on the same itinerary?

      • Hi Hailey, this is a special circumstance which Allegiant does not outline in their information available to the public online. Since we’re not Allegiant Air, we’re not able to answer your question with 100% confidence.

I suggest you call Allegiant’s customer service and inquire with them directly (1-702-505-8888 from the U.S.). Sorry to not be of more help!

Can a CPAP (medical machine) go free as another personal item?

    • Christy Rodriguez · June 15, 2019 · Reply

Hi Susan! Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, a CPAP machine is not considered carry-on luggage and does not count toward your carry-on quota. So yes, you can bring your CPAP on for free and still be allowed your second personal item.

I have 2 sons that want to take fishing poles. I have read both u can take, just no hooks & also has to be checked under the plane. Does anyone know the rules on taking fishing poles with you?

    • Hi Sylvia! This is what Allegiant states online in their published contract of carriage:

“Each piece of sporting equipment will be considered a checked bag with all applicable fees applied per person, per bag, per segment. All Baggage Fees are non-refundable except as provided in Article 65 below. Each bag must weigh 40 lbs or less and the outside measurements of each bag must not exceed eighty (80) inches. Applicable fees will be applied for those bags exceeding the weight and size limits. The total number of bags allowed may not exceed 5 per passenger.

Sporting Equipment – The following sporting equipment will be considered as an additional checked bag when in a container acceptable to Carrier:

      8. Fishing tackle box and fishing rod: so long as the rod is encased in a cylindrical fishing rod container suitable to Carrier for withstanding normal checked baggage handling without sustaining damage to the rod.”

Hope this helps! If you’re still confused, we suggest calling Allegiant’s customer service directly for clarification! 🙂

I purchased my ticket with kiwi and I need to add baggage.

    • Hi Natasha, we’re not sure what you’re asking here? Do you mean you need to know how to add baggage? Did you attempt the instructions above under the “Can I Pre-pay for Baggage?” section?

Hello. I am traveling to Florida…I paid for one checked bag when I booked flights, can I add a checked bag if necessary? Also can I put deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, and makeup in my checked bag? If so what sizes bottles…tya

    • Catherine Luther · July 25, 2019 · Reply

      Hi Sabrina,

Passengers are able to check up to 4 bags with Allegiant Air and you should be able to purchase baggage by logging in to your booking under the ‘Manage Travel’ section on Allegiant’s website. You can pack toiletries such as shampoo and deodorant in your checked bag with no limit on bottle sizes – this only applies to carry-on luggage.

  12. Can I carry a hand bag with my personal item (backpack).

    • Katie Seemann · August 6, 2019 · Reply

      Hi Anu,
No, your hand bag would be considered a personal item. Your backpack would then be subject to an additional carry-on bag fee.

Can I add baggage after I have checked in on the app? It’s not allowing me to select checked bags after I have checked in online or on the app. Can you advise?

    • Catherine Luther · August 9, 2019 · Reply

      Hi Stephanie,

Usually airlines allow passengers to add baggage prior to or during the online check-in process. Give Allegiant a call to see if this is still possible.

I’ve had different experiences flying with my bike using Allegiant. At some airports I pay whatever the regular baggage fee is but at others the tell me because it’s a bike I will be charged an additional $100!? If I am not taking a whole bike complete and merely pieces and they fit in my suitcase with out being over weight, why am I charged extra

    • Catherine Luther · August 10, 2019 · Reply

      Hi Damain,

That must be really frustrating. Unfortunately, Allegiant does not detail their policy for bike transportation on their website so it’s recommended that you contact Allegiant directly to check their policy. They may be able to send you confirmation by email that you could show the check-in agents next time you’re challenged on this.

      Hi Kim,

Each fare-paying passenger is allowed to take one car seat and/or stroller to the boarding gate to be checked free of charge.

Checked baggage is not included in the ticket with Allegiant so you will need to book this separately – $45 per bag pre-departure or around $50 at the airport. It’s likely the play pen would need to be checked for a fee but as we’re not Allegiant Air we can’t confirm this for you. Checked bags must not exceed 40 lbs or max linear dimensions of 80 inches.

My husband and I have already purchased a ticket to fly to Tennessee, we were told we are allowed one free pet in the cabin since he is a veteran. The airline said this was okay and we are now trying to find a carrier that meets your regulations. The only thing we have found which is airline approved on the carrier is more than 7 inches high, and we can’t find one that small. The puppy will be flying back with us and she weighs around 2 lb or less. What are your suggestions? The carrier I have is collapsable.

    • Hi Marjorie,

Please be advised that we are not, and have no affiliation with Allegiant airlines. We are an educational travel website that provides helpful information to travelers. I recommend you contact the Allegiant Airlines customer service team so that they can give you an exact answer to your question.

      Thanks for reading!

  20. Hi
I plan to buy my in-the-future Allegiant ticket at the airport, would I pay airport price for a checked bag, or is it considered “at booking,” since my trip is not that day?

    • Catherine Luther · October 21, 2019 · Reply

      Hi Joy,

I would imagine you will pay the airport price as this would require processing by a customer agent rather than being automatically applied online.
