Rewards Center

American Express Membership Rewards

The Amex EveryDay card earns American Express Membership Rewards points, which we value at 2.2 cents per point because of their flexibility and transferability. Usually, the welcome bonus for the Amex EveryDay card ranges between 10,000 to 25,000 points — which we value between $220 to $550.

Earning Potential

One of the top considerations of any rewards card is how much it will reward you for the various purchases you make with the card.

U.S. Supermarkets3% cash-back (on up to $6,000 in spend each year)2x points (on up to $6,000 in spend each year)

U.S. Online Retail Purchases3% cash-back (on up to $6,000 in spend each year)1x points
All Other Purchases1% cash-back1x points

As you can see, the Amex Blue Cash Everyday card has more going for it when it comes to bonus categories, as it earns 3% cash-back at supermarkets, at gas stations, and on online retail purchases; and the $6,000 threshold is separate for each category — not combined.

While most spend their fair share on gas and groceries, the online retail purchases category is especially interesting as it includes retailers like Amazon, Walmart, computer and electronic stores, department stores, drugstores, furniture stores, and more.

On the other hand, the Amex EveryDay card offers just 1 bonus category, and that is U.S. supermarkets. That said, the card offers a unique feature that allows you to earn 20% bonus points on your purchases when you make 20 purchases or more in the billing period. Meeting the purchase requirement allows you to earn 2.4x points on your U.S. supermarket purchases and 1.2x points on all other purchases. This is a solid rate of return, but needing to make sure you’re making 20 purchases each month could prove to be cumbersome depending on your spending habits.

Redemption Options

Amex Blue Cash Everyday Card

Redeeming rewards with your Amex Blue Cash Everyday card is easy, as you have just 1 option — cash-back. All of your cash-back rewards can be used to offset purchases you make with the card, and fortunately, there are no redemption minimums, so you can redeem as often as you’d like.

Amex EveryDay Card

Where the Amex EveryDay card shines is that it earning Amex Membership Rewards points gives you multiple redemption options, including ways to get outsized value out of your points that cards that earn cash-back simply cannot do.

Of course, it offers standard redemption options like cash-back, as well, but cardholders can also redeem their points through the AmexTravel.com portal, for gift cards, or even as a payment method with select retailers like Amazon and Apple.

However, our absolute favorite way to redeem Amex Membership Rewards points is via the Amex transfer partners, allowing you to book business and first class flights, along with luxury hotel stays, for a fraction of what these experiences would usually cost.

Statement Credits

Amex Blue Cash Everyday Card — Disney Bundle and Home Chef

It is relatively uncommon for a no-annual-fee card to offer statement credits, as these are usually added to cards to help consumers justify cards that charge an annual fee. This is why we were surprised to see that the Amex Blue Cash Everyday card now offers not 1, but 2 separate monthly statement credits to cardholders.

The first credit is one that most are likely to get plenty of use out of, and that is a $7 monthly credit towards The Disney Bundle. The bundle includes Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+, all for $9.99 a month, but by paying with your Amex Blue Cash Everyday card you’ll save up to $84 each year.

Next is a $15 monthly credit towards Home Chef subscriptions, the popular meal delivery service that ships pre-portioned ingredients and recipes right to your door. If this is a service you are using already or have been meaning to try out, then this statement credit can save you up to $180 each year on these orders.

Travel Protections

Both cards are pretty poor when it comes to travel protections, and that is because neither is really designed to be a travel rewards credit card. This is evident by the fact that both charge a foreign transaction fee, meaning you won’t want to use either card for purchases during international travels.

Shopping Benefits and Protections

Fortunately, both cards offer more value when it comes to shopping benefits and protections.

Both the Amex Blue Cash Everyday card and the Amex EveryDay card offer these benefits:

  • Amex Offers — Discounts and opportunities to earn more points with 100 merchants each month
  • American Express Experiences — Exclusive access to ticket pre-sales
  • Purchase Protection — Covers items purchased with your card for up to 90 days from the date of purchase, with up to $1,000 in coverage per claim, and up to $50,000 in coverage per year

Since both cards offer the same shopping benefits and protections, you can narrow down which card is better for you based on the other factors of each card.

Annual Fees and Adding Authorized Users

Annual Fees

Neither the Amex Blue Cash Everyday card nor the Amex Everyday card charge an annual fee to cardholders.

Authorized Users

Similarly, there is no additional fee to add authorized users to either card, and authorized users will earn points/cash-back at the same rate, and receive all of the same benefits, as the primary cardholder. The only benefit that authorized users do not receive is another set of statement credits on the Amex Blue Cash Everyday card.

Final Thoughts

Both the Amex Blue Cash Everyday card and the Amex EveryDay card each have their own merits and can offer plenty of value for no annual fee cards.

If you prefer a cash-back credit card, specifically one that rewards you for groceries, gas, and online purchases, then the Amex Blue Cash Everyday card might be the one for you … even more so if you also are already paying for The Disney Bundle and Home Chef subscriptions on another card.

On the other hand, if you’d prefer a card that allows you to earn up to 2.4x points on groceries and 1.2x points on all other purchases, with flexible redemptions and access to Amex transfer partners, the Amex EveryDay card could be the one for you.
