As you can see, the Amex Gold card’s strengths are its much lower annual fee and better point-earning on dining and groceries. It’s a card geared toward foodies and consumers who prioritize eating out and cooking.

On the other hand, the main appeal of the Amex Platinum card is that it offers valuable travel and lifestyle benefits such as access to several airport lounge networks, hotel elite status, a variety of annual credits, and more.

How To Upgrade Your Amex Gold Card

Follow the following steps to upgrade your Amex Gold card to the Amex Platinum card.

  • Step 1: Make sure you’re actually eligible to upgrade your card — your account must be open for at least a year.
  • Step 2: Check for an upgrade offer in your Amex account online before calling.
  • Step 3: Upgrade by calling the customer service number on the back of your card or use the chat feature on americanexpress.com.
  • Step 4: Upgrading forfeits eligibility for the Amex Platinum card welcome offer if it hasn’t been earned previously. If it’s important to you to get the card’s welcome offer, you might want to apply separately instead of upgrading.
Hot Tip:

Upgrading your card won’t trigger a hard pull and therefore won’t affect your credit report (Source: American Express).

Who Should Upgrade Their Card?

Amex Platinum Upgraded Points LLC 24 Large
Is it worth upgrading to the Amex Platinum card? Image Credit: Upgraded Points

We’ve outlined the benefits of each card and explained how to ask for an upgrade, but should you actually do it? Here are a few tips to help you make that decision.

 1. You’ve Had the Amex Gold Card for More Than a Year

The Credit CARD Act of 2009 means that credit issuers can’t increase a cardmember’s annual fee if their account is less than 1 year old (Source: Federal Trade Commission). So if you haven’t had your Amex Gold card open for at least a year, you’re not eligible to upgrade it to the Amex Platinum card.

2. You’ve Previously Earned a Welcome Offer for the Amex Platinum Card

Traditionally, when you upgrade to a new card, you are not eligible for the public welcome offer that the card currently has. So, if you’ve never received a welcome offer for the Amex Platinum card before, you’d be much better off applying for the card outright, as the welcome offer bonus is often worth more than $1,300 in travel, based on our valuations.

If you’ve already received a welcome offer on the Amex Platinum card, you wouldn’t forfeit any points should you upgrade your Amex Gold card.

3. Amex Has Extended an Upgrade Offer

Occasionally, American Express sends cardmembers an offer to upgrade their card and receive a bonus. We’ve seen offers as high as 60,000 Membership Rewards points (which we value at $1,320) to upgrade from the Amex Gold card to the Amex Platinum card. If you’ve received such an offer, that would be an excellent reason to upgrade.

Hot Tip:

You’re still eligible for upgrade offers even if you have already received a welcome offer for the Amex Platinum card. However, if you accept an upgrade offer and you’ve never had a welcome offer for the Amex Platinum card, you’ll no longer be eligible to receive one should you decide to apply for the card outright.

4. The Amex Platinum Card Is a Better Fit for You

If you’ve weighed the benefits of each card and decided the Amex Platinum card is a better fit, it might make more sense to ask for an upgrade. But make sure you don’t leave any Membership Rewards points on the table if you do so.

5. You Don’t Want a Hard Pull on Your Credit

When you request an upgrade on an Amex card, American Express won’t perform a hard pull, so you won’t receive a new inquiry on your credit report, and it won’t affect your 5/24 status. That’s important if you’re trying to stay eligible for certain Chase cards.

Final Thoughts

Upgrading your Amex Gold card to the Amex Platinum card is easy, and you can do it by phone or chat after holding the Amex Gold card for at least a year. Deciding whether to upgrade or apply outright to get the welcome offer takes more thought. Remember that upgrade offers up to 60,000 points may occasionally be available, so make sure to check those out before you decide.

Either way, you should do whatever makes the most sense for you. You might even decide that it is worth holding both the Amex Gold card and Amex Platinum card to take advantage of the points-earning and luxury travel benefits of both.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I upgrade my Amex Gold card to the Amex Platinum card?

Can you switch from the Amex Platinum card to the Amex Gold card?

Yes, you can downgrade your Amex Platinum card to the Amex Gold card. But just like with upgrades, be sure you’ve had the card open for at least 1 year. This is a great way to save some money if you no longer find the Amex Platinum card’s benefits worth the fee.

Is it good to upgrade a credit card?

Yes, it can be good to upgrade a credit card. If you think the benefits of the card you’re upgrading to are better, you have a lucrative upgrade offer, or you’re trying to avoid any new credit pulls, then upgrading could be a prime option. But first, make sure that you’re not hurting your eligibility for future welcome bonus offers.

Will upgrading my Amex Gold card affect my welcome offer eligibility?
