If dining and groceries are some of your largest monthly spending categories and you want to earn flexible rewards on this spending, then the American Express® Gold Card would be worth it for you. If not, the card and its annual fee are hard to justify.

With the 4x points you’d earn on these purchases, the number of points you’d earn from dining and U.S. supermarket purchases alone could easily offset the annual fee you pay each year.

Quick Overview: Is the Amex Gold Card Worth It?

With the Amex Gold card, you have to pay an annual fee of $325 (rates & fees). However, the card also comes with up to $424 worth of dining-related statement credits that offset this fee.

Alternatively, if you spent at least $3,694 on dining and U.S. supermarket purchases each year, which is just around $307 a month, you’d earn 14,775 Membership Rewards points, which we value at $325 based on our valuation of Amex points. That’d cover your annual fee before factoring in any of the statement credits or other Amex Gold card benefits.

American Express Membership Rewards

Overall, the Amex Gold card is worth adding to your wallet if you regularly dine out, shop for groceries, and can easily use the handful of statement credits. Alternatively, if you don’t spend much on food each month, then you would be better off selecting another card.

How the Amex Gold Card Credits and Earnings Stack up Against the $325 Fee

The value you receive from the Amex Gold card primarily comes in 2 forms: the value you receive from the statement credits and the value you receive from the points that you earn.

In addition to up to $424 in annual credits, the Amex Gold card earns:

  • 5x points on prepaid hotels via AmexTravel.com or the Amex Travel app
  • 4x points at restaurants worldwide, up to $50,000 per calendar year, then 1x thereafter
  • 4x points at U.S. supermarkets, up to $25,000 per calendar year, then 1x thereafter
  • 3x points on flights purchased directly from airlines or at AmexTravel.com
  • 2x points on prepaid car rentals and cruises via AmexTravel.com (Source: American Express)

Given that you have 5 different bonus categories at your disposal, you have quite a few ways to rack up additional points on food and travel that you otherwise would have been purchasing anyway.

At our valuation of 2.2 cents per Amex point, you’d only need to spend $3,694 annually combined on groceries and dining to break even on the annual fee, even without factoring in the points you’d earn from prepaid hotels, flights, and prepaid rental cars and cruises through AmexTravel.com, or from its up to $424 in annual statement credits.

Who the Amex Gold Card Is (And Isn’t) Worth It For

If You Spend on Dining and Groceries: Worth It

If you spend at least $300 to $400 a month on dining and grocery purchases, the value of the points you earn from these purchases offsets the annual fee you pay for the card each year, before factoring in other earnings on card benefits.

If You Spend on Food but Won’t Touch the Credits: Borderline

If you’re only relying on the value of the points you earn from the various bonus categories and you know you won’t use any of the statement credits, including Resy, Uber Cash, Dunkin’, or the dining credit, then it is borderline on whether the card is worth it for you. Depending on how much you spend on the card each year, you might still easily come out ahead, but you have to run your own budget numbers to see if it makes sense.

If You Don’t Spend on Food or Want Travel Perks: Not Worth It

If you spend very little on food each year, whether on dining or groceries, then the Amex Gold card is definitely not worth it for you. Alternatively, if you want a card that offers more travel perks that the Amex Gold card simply doesn’t offer, like airport lounge access, hotel elite status, and a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credit, then the Amex Gold card is not worth it for you.

The Catch: Use-It-or-Lose-It Credits

Since most of the statement credits offered on the Amex Gold card come monthly, the catch is that you need to stay on top of using these credits each month to maximize your value, as they don’t roll over month to month if you don’t use them.

For instance, since the dining credit is only eligible at Grubhub, The Cheesecake Factory, Buffalo Wild Wings, Wonder, and Five Guys, if you don’t visit or order from one of these once a month, then the credit is forfeited.

If You Also Want the Platinum Card® from American Express

If you’re interested in the Amex Gold card but also want to add the Amex Platinum card to your wallet, we highly recommend applying for the Amex Gold card first.

This allows you to maximize the number of Amex Membership Rewards points you can earn from welcome offers by applying first for the Amex Gold card and then for the Amex Platinum card at a later date. If you apply for the Amex Platinum card first, you’re ineligible to receive the welcome offer bonus on the Amex Gold card.

With this strategy, you maximize the number of points you can earn from each welcome offer and still get to pair the cards together to take advantage of what each card does best: earning points with the Amex Gold card and enjoying premium benefits and travel perks with the Amex Platinum card.

Hot Tip:

See our guide on the Amex Gold card compared to the Amex Platinum card for a full breakdown.

If It’s Not Worth It: Downgrades and Alternatives

If after holding the Amex Gold card for at least a year and determining that it isn’t a good fit for you, you can always downgrade the card to a card with a more affordable annual fee, like the American Express® Classic Green Card (not open to new applicants).

This way, you preserve your credit history and all of the Amex Membership Rewards points you’ve earned.

Final Thoughts

Whether the Amex Gold card is worth it for you depends on approximately how much you spend per month on dining and grocery purchases and whether you’d make good use of the card’s various statement credits, such as its dining credit, Uber Cash credit, and Resy credit.

Run the numbers based on your own monthly spending, or use our math breakdown above, to determine whether the Amex Gold card is a good fit for you.
