As the self-appointed travel advisor in my family, I’m constantly taking stock of everyone’s loyalty balances and credit card portfolios. I’m on the lookout for new ways to optimize earnings, whether that’s within existing accounts or by opening new ones.

This strategy has allowed us to travel together to amazing destinations for far less out of pocket than a trip would typically cost — something we’ve done for years. Recently, my parents mentioned a desire to go on a laid-back beach vacation to the Caribbean, where they could kick back and relax, and we could all enjoy each other’s company.

With a limited-time welcome offer for the Chase Sapphire Reserve® that’s ending soon, I recommended both of my parents apply for the card. Here’s why.

Chase Sapphire Reserve Card’s 150K-Point Welcome Offer

For a limited time only, the Chase Sapphire Reserve card boasts a 150,000-point welcome bonus offer after spending $6,000 on purchases within 3 months of account opening. This welcome offer is ending soon, so my parents were able to apply while the increased opportunity was still around.

Chase Ultimate Rewards

Based on our valuation of Chase Ultimate Rewards points, this welcome bonus is worth $3,000 by leveraging Chase’s airline and hotel transfer partners.

This current bonus offer is especially attractive when you consider the previous best welcome offer was for 125,000 points.

Why My Parents Applied for 2 Chase Sapphire Reserve Cards

My thought process behind my recommendation for each of my parents was simple: Do it for the points.

While the Chase Sapphire Reserve card offers a long list of perks and benefits, my motivation was to have each of my parents open the card to earn the welcome bonuses.

Once each of them meets the minimum spending requirement, they will have at least 300,000 Ultimate Rewards points available for a trip. But they will earn points on purchases that qualifies for the minimum spending requirements.

Redeeming 350K Ultimate Rewards Points

For years, my preferred use of Chase Ultimate Rewards points has been to transfer them to World of Hyatt at a 1:1 ratio and then book free nights at top properties around the world. That has recently gotten more expensive, thanks to Hyatt’s recent award chart devaluation.

However, there’s still tremendous value in the program, and my parents’ desire for a relaxing Caribbean vacation in 2027 still aligns well with the Chase-to-Hyatt transfer method.

I estimate that my parents will have a combined total of about 350,000 Ultimate Rewards points by putting daily spending on their cards for the next several months. I’m treating these entirely as World of Hyatt points, so I immediately turned my search to Hyatt’s Caribbean properties, which it has several of. I knew we didn’t want an all-inclusive property (my parents just aren’t fond of them), which quickly eliminated many resorts.

Next, I knew I wanted to avoid Category 8 properties, the most expensive in the World of Hyatt portfolio. This eliminated properties like the Hyatt Regency Aruba Resort, Spa & Casino and the upcoming Andaz Turks and Caicos.

After my eliminations, I was left with 2 primary options: the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar in the Bahamas and the Park Hyatt St. Kitts Christophe Harbour. From there, the choice was easy. I’ve stayed at the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar, and it’s a fantastic property, but too big and overwhelming for the type of trip my parents want.

This left the Park Hyatt St. Kitts, a property I’ve been interested in since its opening several years ago, but haven’t yet had the chance to visit. As a Category 7 World of Hyatt property, award nights range from 25,000 to 55,000 points per night, depending on the stay dates.

During the first week of March next year, my parents’ ideal travel window, rates range from 30,000 points to 35,000 points across the 5 nights we’re hoping to stay at the property.

In other words, a 5-night stay requires 160,000 points. With 2 rooms, that’s a total of 320,000 points, which we’ll easily have after each of my parents exceeds the minimum spending threshold and spends just a little bit more on the cards.

Yes, the award rates would likely have been cheaper before World of Hyatt’s devaluation, but to put this into perspective, the cash rate for 5 nights during the first week of March 2027 is $6,530, so we’ll get about 4 cents per point in value.

That’s still a phenomenal rate, especially given that we value World of Hyatt points at 1.5 cents apiece.

Chase Sapphire Reserve Card’s Best Travel Perks

With my plan for accommodations at the Park Hyatt St. Kitts settled — assuming availability holds for a few weeks — this trip will include a couple more benefits with the Chase Sapphire Reserve card.

One of the best features of the card is its generous $300 annual travel credit, which posts automatically to any purchases that code as travel. One of the first things my parents did after they received their cards was purchasing round-trip flights from Detroit (DTW) to St. Kitts (SKB).

They each paid about $650 round-trip for their flights, with a stop in New York (JFK) each way. However, with the $300 credit already posted on each account, it’s essentially $350 per ticket. That’s not bad considering current airfare prices and peak spring break demand.

Because the flights connect at JFK, my parents will be able to use yet another perk of the card on this trip: access to the Chase Sapphire Lounge by The Club at the airport. They haven’t done much traveling with lounge access up to this point, so despite the crowds, I think they’ll enjoy the chance to visit the lounge, have a few drinks, visit a less-crowded restroom, and charge their devices in comfortable seating away from the much busier terminal.

What About the Annual Fee?

Of course, it’s hard to talk about the Chase Sapphire Reserve card without mentioning its steep $795 annual fee. My parents certainly experienced a bit of sticker shock when I told them that number.

However, they came around after I ran through all the benefits and welcome offer, and were firmly on board once I mentioned the cash price of the stay at the Park Hyatt St. Kitts.

In this scenario, despite using just a few of the cards’ perks, we’ve extracted value that far exceeds the cost of the annual fee of each card. Take the hotel stay, for example. We’ll cover a $13,000 hotel stay with points, and all it takes is typical everyday spending. Plus, add in the $600 in total flight savings, and that’s even more value to offset the almost $1,600 in annual fees paid for both cards.

Final Thoughts

Thanks to the Chase Sapphire Reserve card and its elevated welcome offer, we’ll have enough points to book 2 rooms for 5 nights entirely on points at one of Hyatt’s most lauded properties. That’s not all, though. My parents saved $600 on airfare, and traveled in far more comfort thanks to lounge access during a New York layover.

That’s a pretty sweet deal if you ask me, but the elevated welcome offer is ending soon.

Yes, the annual fee is steep, but after running the numbers on the trip I’m planning and explaining the incredible value we could get from the points to my parents, it became a no-brainer for each of them to apply for a card. Now, we just need the welcome bonuses posted and the award availability to hold.
