Update:The offer mentioned below has expired and is no longer available.

There are new targeted promotions from American Airlines offering bonus miles and Loyalty Points. If you have travel coming up in August and September, you’ll want to check your AA account to see what offers you have. You’ll need to act fast because registration is required by July 22, 2024.

Here are the details of these new American Airlines promotions.

American Airlines Promotions

If you’re an American Airlines flyer, check your account to see if you were targeted for one of these new promotions. There are multiple offers going around, so yours may be different. Here are some of the offers Upgraded Points team members received:

  • Earn 2,000 bonus miles after 2 qualifying flights in any cabin.
  • Earn 5,000 bonus miles after 2 qualifying first, business, or premium economy flights.
  • Earn 6,000 bonus miles after 6 qualifying flights in any cabin.

These promotions require registration by July 22, 2024. Qualifying flights are ones that are booked between your registration date and July 22, 2024, for travel between August 1, 2024, and September 30, 2024.

Flights booked with American Airlines miles and flights marketed or operated by codeshare partners don’t qualify.

We also found a couple of offers to earn miles or Loyalty Points just for joining American’s email list. These require you to opt in to receive American Airlines promotional emails by August 22 and stay subscribed through September 22, 2024.

  • Earn 50 Loyalty Points
  • Earn 500 Loyalty Points
  • Earn 500 AAdvantage miles

These promos are easy ways to pick up extra Loyalty Points, which count toward American Airlines elite status.

Bottom Line:

Multiple targeted promotions are available through American Airlines right now. Some offer bonus redeemable miles, and others offer Loyalty Points — the metric used to measure American Airlines elite status.

Check To See if You Were Targeted

American Airlines promotions

If you’re eligible, you’ll see your offer here. Don’t forget to register before you book any flights.

Is It Worth It?

It’s great to see new promotions offering bonus American Airlines miles. However, after reading the fine print, these offers are a bit underwhelming. For starters, flights booked before you register don’t count. Also, the 2-month travel window is relatively small.

Let’s look at the offer I received: 5,000 bonus miles after 2 qualifying first, business, or premium economy flights. Considering we value 5,000 American Airlines miles at $70, it’s not worth booking a higher-level cabin instead of economy unless it would cost less than $70. And you’d need to make that happen twice for under $70 to get the bonus miles and come out ahead.

In addition, the terms and conditions don’t clarify if a qualifying flight is round-trip, one-way, or a flight segment. That can be an important factor in determining if this promotion is worth it. Will a round-trip ticket with a connection each way (which has 4 segments) count as 1 flight (because they were all booked on 1 ticket), 2 flights, or 4 flights (4 segments)? Unfortunately, it’s unclear.

While it’s always good to see more ways to earn miles, my guess is that this promotion will reward those who happen to be traveling anyway, rather than changing people’s behaviors to earn the bonus miles.

Regardless of whether or not this promotion is worth it, it can’t hurt to register. You never know when plans change, and it’s always fun to earn bonus miles when you weren’t expecting them.

Final Thoughts

There are multiple targeted American Airlines promotions available right now. The offer you receive may be different than the ones listed here, so be sure to read the fine print to make sure it’s worth it to you. Don’t forget to register even if you don’t think you’ll be able to take advantage of the offer. You never know when plans can change.
