Update:

The offer mentioned below has expired and is no longer available.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is arguably the most popular travel rewards card on the market today, and it’s easy to understand why. It provides interesting perks and benefits and offers bonus earnings on everyday spending categories.

Right now, the Chase Sapphire Preferred card has a limited-time welcome bonus of 100,000 points after you spend $5,000 in the first 3 months of account opening. This incredible bonus offer makes this fantastic travel rewards card even more appealing.

Let’s dive into the 5 questions you’ll want to ask yourself before submitting that application.

1. Do You Have a Good Credit Score?

Your credit score is one of the most important factors Chase will consider. To have a best shot at getting approved for the Chase Sapphire Preferred card, it’s recommended that you have a score in the “good” to “excellent” range.

If you’re completely new to credit, approval could be tough. You should aim to have at least 6 months of credit card history under your belt before applying for the Chase Sapphire Preferred card.

2. Have You Opened 5 Credit Cards in Less than 24 Months?

One of the most important considerations is the Chase 5/24 rule, which was implemented to prevent potential applicants from getting too many Chase welcome bonus offers.

Under this application rule, Chase will likely not approve you for any new accounts if you have already opened 5 or more credit cards — from any issuer — in the last 24 months. Unfortunately, there aren’t any workarounds to the Chase 5/24 rule besides waiting for an account to become at least 24 months old.

How To Calculate Your Chase 5/24 Status

To calculate your 5/24 status, you need to count the number of credit card accounts you have opened in the past 24 months, including all credit cards reported to your personal credit report from any issuing bank. Checking your free credit report is the easiest way to see the age of each credit card in your wallet.

The Chase 5/24 rule applies to personal credit cards from issuers like Citibank and American Express that you’ve opened or closed, retail store credit cards, and even certain business credit cards. Do note that any business cards that do not show up on your personal credit report do not count toward your 5/24 status.

It is also worth noting that the cards you are listed as an authorized user for count toward your 5/24 total. There have been reports that you can contact Chase and let them know that you are only an authorized user, and they will not count that specific card toward your 5/24 total. However, your mileage may vary.

Once you confirm that you’ve opened less than 5 cards in the 48-month timeframe, you’re golden to move onto the next step.

3. Do You Already Have a Chase Sapphire Card?

Chase only allows you to have a single Sapphire card at a time. Whether you have the Chase Sapphire Preferred card already or the more premium Chase Sapphire Reserve®, you can only have 1 product from this family at a time, making you ineligible to earn the 100,000-point welcome bonus offer.

If you’ve never applied for either card or don’t currently have one open, it’s time to look at the next requirement.

4. Have You Earned a Welcome Offer in the Past 48 Months?

Chase also imposes a 48-month welcome bonus offer rule on both Sapphire cards. This means that cardholders are not eligible for a welcome offer if they have already received a bonus on either Sapphire card within the last 48 months.

Again, if you’ve never applied for either the Chase Sapphire Preferred card or the Chase Sapphire Reserve card, then you are in the clear.

If it has been more than 48 months since you last received a welcome bonus from the Chase Sapphire Preferred card or Chase Sapphire Reserve card, you might qualify for another one. To become eligible, you will need to either close your current Sapphire card or switch it to a different Chase product — then wait at least 1 to 2 weeks before submitting a fresh application. (You’ll want to make sure you get this process done before the 100,000-bonus offer ends!).

5. Can You Meet the $5,000 Minimum Spending Requirement?

Before applying for any card, take a close look at the minimum spending requirement tied to this welcome bonus. You’ll need to spend $5,000 on purchases within the first 3 months to unlock the full 100,000-point bonus offer.

It’s important not to stretch your budget or take on debt just to hit that target. Instead, make sure the threshold fits naturally within your regular spending habits or upcoming expenses. If you have multiple credit cards, it’s often smart to temporarily focus your spending on the new card until you meet the bonus requirement.

Is the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card Worth It?

The Chase Sapphire Preferred card is a fantastic card that offers plenty of value. For many, it is the perfect starter travel rewards card. For others, it is the best all-around travel rewards card. In fact, the card routinely makes our list of best travel credit cards.

Cardholders earn 5x Ultimate Rewards points on travel purchased through Chase Travel; 5x points on Lyft purchases (through September 30, 2027); 3x points on dining, select streaming services and online groceries; and 2x on all other travel purchases.

There are numerous benefits, including a $50 annual Chase Travel hotel credit, flexible point redemptions, a complimentary DoorDash DashPass membership for one year (when activated by December 31, 2027), and fantastic travel insurance coverage, which includes best-in-class primary car rental insurance.

Final Thoughts

The limited-time welcome bonus offer on the Chase Sapphire Preferred card, which is as high as it has been in years, will make the popular travel rewards card even more desirable. However, it’s important to make sure you’ll qualify before hitting apply.
