In the world of points and miles, timing is everything. Chase often sweetens the deal with elevated welcome offers, and when the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card’s bonus offer reached an all-time high, I wanted to apply.

While welcome offers change a few times per year, the current one is:

Earn 3 Free Nights (each night valued up to 50,000 points) after spending $3,000 on eligible purchases within 3 months of account opening. Certain hotels have resort fees.

When the Marriott Boundless card was offering an elevated welcome bonus of 5 free night awards (each night valued at up to 50,000 points) after spending $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months of account opening, I knew it was time to pull the trigger. However, there were a few roadblocks along the way.

Chase’s 5/24 Application Rule

Earlier this year, a tempting bonus offer rolled around for the Marriott Boundless card. But despite my excitement, I held off.

I wasn’t under Chase’s unofficial 5/24 rule yet, which is an unofficial policy restricting credit card approvals for applicants who have opened 5 or more personal credit cards from any bank in the past 24 months. Therefore, I didn’t want to undergo a hard credit check or apply in vain.

Before I could apply for this all-time high Marriott Boundless offer, I had to make sure I was under Chase’s 5/24 rule to avoid an instant denial. Image Credit: Upgraded Points LLC

Fast-forward to June 2025, when I finally dipped under the 5/24 threshold, and I knew it was the perfect opportunity to apply for the Marriott Boundless card. But as with most things in life, it wasn’t that simple.

Marriott’s 24-Month Application Rule

Before submitting my application, I did some research. Because Marriott Bonvoy partners with both Chase and American Express to offer credit cards, it has some complicated rules around welcome bonus eligibility.

If you’ve received a welcome bonus on any Marriott Bonvoy card within the past 24 months, you may not qualify for another one — even if it’s from a different card issuer.

I was initially confused about when the 24-month clock would reset. I first tried applying on June 1, 2025, but Chase immediately displayed a message saying I wasn’t eligible since I’d earned a Marriott welcome bonus within the past 24 months.

That’s when I realized eligibility was not based on when you opened the account, but when you actually earned the bonus offer. In my case, I had earned a welcome bonus on the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express® Card in June 2023.

So, technically, I wouldn’t be eligible for another Marriott co-branded bonus offer until those full 24 months have passed.

Amex Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Hotel Lobby Upgraded Points LLC 2
Since I earned a Marriott welcome bonus less than 24 months ago, I had to wait until the full 24-month period passed to be eligible again. Image Credit: Upgraded Points

To confirm, I called Chase to clarify the exact eligibility cutoff date. A friendly representative told me that their system considers the 24-month clock to restart on the first date after the last welcome bonus was earned — not the card’s opening date or when you closed it.

I then called Amex to confirm when I last earned a Marriott Bonvoy welcome bonus, and the phone agent looked it up for me: June 11, 2023. That meant I would be eligible for a new bonus starting on June 12, 2025 — exactly 24 months and 1 day since I’d earned the welcome bonus offer on the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant card.

Calling Chase’s Reconsideration Line

When I was finally under 5/24 and eligible for a new welcome offer, I applied for the Marriott Boundless card.

I was excited, but the application went to pending status. No worries, I thought. Plenty of my applications over the years have gone to pending or even outright denial.

I immediately called the Chase reconsideration line to see if they could process my application. The rep reviewed my file and said I had been denied because of “too many accounts opened in the past 24 months.” Odd, considering I was at 4/24 by every tracker.

I was traveling in Japan then and asked politely if they could reconsider or move credit from an existing line. The agent said they would return it to underwriting for a second look and that I’d hear back soon.

Frustrated Man Using Computer

By the time I returned home from Japan, 2 weeks had passed — and I still hadn’t received an approval email or a denial letter. So, I called Chase again to follow up.

This time, I was transferred to the Chase security department and learned that my application had been flagged for potential fraud. Since I hadn’t heard back, I started the application process again for the same card. But I backed out before submitting when Chase’s system alerted me during the application process that I was ineligible for the bonus offer (thanks to the 24-month rule).

What I didn’t realize is that even incomplete applications can trigger an internal alert. So when I applied again weeks later — now eligible — Chase saw 2 recent application attempts for the same card and flagged them as suspicious.

Thankfully, the security team rep was friendly and understanding. He asked me to verify some personal details: full name, email, and address. After a few minutes on hold, he returned with the news I’d been waiting for: “You’re approved.”

It felt like a reward for doing the research, timing everything right, and being persistent.

Hot Tip:

Not receiving instant approval on a credit card application can be frustrating. But when you call the credit card issuer’s reconsideration line, one of the best things you can do is be friendly. The agents have the final say on extending your credit, so being polite, patient, and ready to provide any information they need can go a long way in improving your chances of approval.

What To Do Before Applying for Any Credit Card

This experience was a great reminder of a few key lessons for anyone in the points and miles game.

First, always call the reconsideration line if your application is pending or denied. Sometimes, the issuer just needs more information to make a decision (or thinks your application is fraudulent), and you won’t get approved unless you follow up.

Don’t wait for a letter in the mail determining your outcome. Call the reconsideration line if your application goes into pending or denial status. Image Credit: Swello via Unsplash

Next, know the application rules. In my case, I had to be aware of my Chase 5/24 status and the 24-month welcome bonus rules on Marriott Bonvoy co-branded cards. You must wait 24 months and 1 day from the date you earned your last welcome bonus on any Marriott Bonvoy card before you’re eligible for another, regardless of whether it’s from Chase or Amex.

And finally, don’t be surprised if the process isn’t smooth. Issuers like Chase may flag applications for seemingly minor reasons, especially if you’ve applied before, so be proactive and follow up if you don’t hear back.
