Update: The offer mentioned below has expired and is no longer available.

In case you haven’t heard, the tiny Gulf nation of Qatar is hosting the FIFA World Cup 2022 that’s due to start in just about a month’s time.

To celebrate, the nation’s flag carrier, Qatar Airways, is awarding up to 7,000 bonus Avios miles to its Privilege Club members for a limited time.

Here’s all you need to know about this promotion!

Earn Bonus Avios When You Book a Qatar Airways Flight

From now through December 15, 2022, you can book a Qatar Airways flight through the airline’s website or its mobile app and you’ll earn 5,000 or 7,000 bonus Avios, depending on the way you book the ticket.

If you book through the website, you’ll earn 5,000 bonus Avios, but if you book through the app, you’ll earn 7,000.

Note that this offer is only valid for Qatar Airways Privilege Club members who enrolled in the program before September 24, 2022.

Here are some other important details you should know:

  • The offer is valid for flights booked between now and December 15, 2022.
  • The offer is valid for travel between November 1 and December 20, 2022.
  • The offer is only valid once during the promotional period.
  • Members must provide their Privilege Club membership number at the time of booking or at check-in.
  • If any ticket was booked before the promotional booking window and then reissued during the promotional period, it will not be eligible for the offer.
  • Offer is valid only for flights marketed and flown by Qatar Airways.
  • Bonus Avios will be earned after the first leg of a qualifying itinerary is flown.

Earning and Redeeming Qatar Airways Avios

Qatar’s Privilege Club isn’t talked about as much as some of the other frequent flyer programs in the game, but there is still value to be found in using the program.

While its award charts may not offer the best deals around, earning Qatar Airways Avios is relatively easy because the program is partnered with a few major transferable currencies: Citi ThankYou Rewards and Marriott Bonvoy. Citi ThankYou Points transfer at a 1:1 ratio while Marriott Bonvoy points transfer at a 3:1 ratio with a 5,000-mile bonus for every 60,000 Bonvoy points transferred.

Additionally, since Qatar Privilege Club recently adopted Avios as its loyalty currency, you can transfer points between your British Airways Executive Club account and your Privilege Club account at a 1:1 ratio, opening up even more ways to earn lots of Avios since British Airways partners with even more transferable points programs, including American Express Membership Rewards and Chase Ultimate Rewards.

When it comes to redeeming your Qatar Airways Avios, there aren’t a tremendous number of opportunities to get excellent value, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t any.

You can redeem 70,000 Avios for a one-way American Airlines flight in Flagship business class between the U.S. and Europe. Similarly, you can book a one-way Iberia business class flight between its U.S. gateways and Spain for the same 70,000 Avios.

Just note that Qatar passes on fuel surcharges to award tickets on its own metal as well as partners, so you’ll want to make sure your redemption makes sense before you decide to book.

Final Thoughts

If you were planning on flying to/through Doha (DOH) with Qatar Airways (for the World Cup or otherwise) between November 1 and December 20 of this year — and you’ve been a Privilege Club member since before September 24, 2022 — there’s no reason not to take advantage of this offer from the airline.

Should you go out of your way to book a Qatar Airways flight just to earn 5,000 to 7,000 bonus Avios? Probably not, but bonus points are bonus points, after all, and if you were planning on a trip but haven’t booked your flight yet, you might as well earn some extra points for your flying!
