After holding Hilton Honors Diamond status for over a year, I dropped down to Gold at the start of 2025. I assumed I’d miss some of the perks, but now with a full year of experiencing Gold status, I’ve hardly missed Diamond status at all.

Gold has given me everything I needed from Hilton this year, including upgrades, early check-ins, late checkouts, and nightly food and beverage credits. Even better, I didn’t have to do a thing to earn it, other than keep using one of my favorite travel cards.

Here’s why I was satisfied with my Hilton Honors Gold status this year, and why I’ll likely remain where I am.

How I Get Automatic Hilton Honors Gold Status

I earned Diamond status in 2023 and took advantage of the benefits throughout 2024, but decided not to go out of my way to earn this tier for the 2025 year.

I didn’t have a bad experience as a Diamond member, but at the same time, that status wasn’t critical for my future travel plans. Unlike previous years, I haven’t stayed much at Hilton properties in 2025, instead shifting more to Thousand Trails, Disney World resorts, and World of Hyatt properties.

I have the Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card, which offers automatic Gold status just by holding the card. Other cards that offer complimentary Hilton Honors Gold elite status upon enrollment include the Platinum Card® from American Express and The Business Platinum Card® from American Express.

Hilton Honors Gold vs. Diamond Status

Losing Diamond meant that I only dropped down to Gold, which shares many of the same benefits as Diamond. Best of all, I don’t have to do any work to keep it.

For some context, I made an effort to achieve Diamond status back in 2023, mainly because, as the year drew to a close, I realized how close I was to reaching it. I did the math, directing more spending to my Hilton Surpass card and paying for a December stay in New York City in cash because it would earn me enough points to secure Diamond status.

I don’t regret doing that, but it feels a little silly now that I put effort into earning a status tier that I barely noticed was gone this year. I expected it to sting to lose top-tier Hilton Honors status, but I haven’t missed it.

The benefits I liked about Diamond status included executive lounge access, a higher points bonus (100% versus 80%), upgrade priority, priority treatment, and Diamond parking spots.

My Travels as a Hilton Honors Gold Member

Nearly a year into my downgrade to Gold, I’ve only experienced 1 moment where I felt like Gold status was a step down.

When I stayed a night at Hilton Americas-Houston, I couldn’t get an upgrade to the executive floor as a Gold member and therefore couldn’t visit the executive lounge for afternoon refreshments or breakfast in the morning. That would have been nice, but it wasn’t a dealbreaker — and my nightly food and beverage credit covered a bite to eat, anyway.

Hilton Americas Houston R24 Rooftop Lounge bar
We ate in the lounge after it opened to the public in the evening.

But that visit wasn’t without an upgrade. As a Gold member, I still got an upgraded room with a fantastic park view.

Hilton Americas Houston room view
The view in our room was just like the lounge, except it was a few floors down.

I had only one other 2025 Hilton stay where I thought I might get an upgrade (the rest were at Hampton Inn or Homewood Suites properties), and the upgrade was great there, too. Yet again, I got an upgraded room with a view at the Hilton Orlando Buena Vista Palace.

Hilton Buena Vista Palace Orlando guestroom balcony daytime view
The view from our upgraded room at the Hilton Orlando Buena Vista Palace.

As a Gold member, I expected the early check-in and late checkout privileges might be more limited than they were as a Diamond member, but Hilton came through for those, too. I received a late checkout at Hilton Americas-Houston and checked in early at Hilton Orlando Buena Vista Palace, where the front desk was happy to extend a 1 p.m. late checkout, allowing us to enjoy the lazy river and pool the next morning.

The nightly food and beverage credit is identical for Gold and Diamond, so there was no issue there. I still received a nightly credit of $15 per adult ($30 total) as a Gold member. That credit isn’t enough for a sit-down breakfast at a hotel restaurant, but it goes pretty far for coffee, grab-and-go breakfasts, and the occasional late-night snack. I use the full value every time it’s available.

The Diamond 100% points bonus is higher than the Gold 80% bonus, but the reality is that I didn’t stay enough nights with Hilton in 2025 for the gap to matter. I haven’t been short of points in 2025, as I redeemed a free night certificate to stay at the Hilton Orlando Buena Vista Palace and still have more than enough points earmarked for redemptions in 2026.

The Hilton Honors benefits I value the most — all of which are available at the Gold status level — include no resort fees on award stays, the fifth night free on rewards stays, space-available room upgrades, nightly food and beverage credit, and late checkout upon availability. I don’t see much value in Diamond’s more subtle perks, such as a 48-hour guarantee and (maybe) slightly better Wi-Fi.

Bottom Line:

In everyday travel, Hilton Honors Gold worked perfectly fine. I got upgrades, early check-in, late checkout, and food and beverage credits that enhanced my stays. It was a relief not to worry about whether I’d reach Diamond status, because I could take it or leave it.

Would I Go Back to Hilton Diamond Status?

Although I realized this year that Diamond status isn’t a must-have for me, it’s not off the table. The perks I care about most are built into Gold. But there are scenarios where Diamond status would matter more to me and could be worth getting.

If I increase my international travel, executive lounge access becomes more important. Domestic executive lounges are rare in the U.S. but more plentiful in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.

With executive lounge access, a guest and I can get complimentary breakfast in the lounge each morning, which can offer savings. Lounges also tend to be a good place to work, which I would appreciate for taking work calls or focusing on tasks in a dedicated work area.

Another scenario would be if I leaned back into Hilton as my go-to hotel brand. Redemption sweet spots, good rates, and Hilton’s vast network of hotels could line up with my travel itineraries and make Diamond more valuable to me.

While it’s possible I’ll care more about executive lounge access and visit more Hilton properties, it’s more likely I’d get Diamond status by opening a Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card.

I’ve been happy with the Hilton Surpass card thus far, as it earns well on some of my everyday purchases (especially for groceries). However, I still have my eye on the Hilton Aspire card because it offers even greater value.

With the Hilton Aspire card, I’d get automatic Diamond status. Although the annual fee is $550 (rates & fees), I could easily offset it by using the annual free night certificate, up to $400 annually in Hilton resort statement credits (up to $200 in semiannual credits), and up to $200 annual flight credit.

Hilton Diamond Status Is Easier To Reach in 2026

Hilton recently announced a new membership tier, Diamond Reserve, and lowered requirements to earn elite status, including Diamond.

As of January 1, 2026, Diamond status can be achieved with one of the following metrics:

  • 25 stays
  • 50 nights
  • $11,500 in eligible spending

These are more achievable than the previous 30 stays or 60 nights or 120,000 base points requirement.

If I naturally reach those thresholds with Hilton nights, great. But I don’t think I’ll get to Diamond status even with lower requirements, and I’m OK with that.

Final Thoughts

Hilton Honors Gold, which I receive automatically with my Hilton Surpass card, provides the benefits I use the most.

Diamond is easier to reach in 2026, but it isn’t significantly more helpful than Gold status for my travel needs. I’m happy to maintain my Gold status, and I have a straightforward path back to Diamond via the Hilton Aspire card if I ever decide to upgrade.
