My credit card portfolio covers nearly every rewards category possible, but I’ve recently reevaluated my points-earning strategy.

I’ve decided to focus more of my spending on credit cards that offer a flat rate on every purchase, so I can earn more points on more transactions. Let’s take a look at why.

What Are Category Codes?

When a credit card awards extra points for spending on a certain category, it does so based on the merchant category code. If a merchant’s category code does not match the type of purchase you made, the transaction may not qualify for bonus rewards as you expected.

The Problem With Merchant Category Codes

I am a huge theatergoer, and it’s common to find me up in New York for the weekend, seeing some Broadway shows, or at a local theater in the city I’m visiting, seeing a small-town production. I have the Capital One Savor Cash Rewards Credit CardInformation collected independently. Not reviewed by Capital One., which earns 3% back on entertainment purchases, including theater tickets.

However, I’ve found that some theater ticket purchases, even when made directly through the theater, do not count as “entertainment” for transaction coding, and I’ve lost out on rewards because of this. I’ve seen theaters coded as business services, nonprofit organizations, and even generic categories such as “other services.”

Most name-brand theaters (like those in New York that use Ticketmaster) seem to code as entertainment, but many local theaters do not.

Just a few weeks ago, I was dining at a restaurant at the W Taipei. In my experience, restaurants in a name-brand hotel tend to be coded as a restaurant when paying the bill. I assumed that this experience would be no different. I put the charge on my American Express® Gold Card to earn 4 Membership Rewards points per $1 on dining (up to $50,000 points per calendar year, then 1x).

But the charge was coded as lodging, and I lost out on 3 extra points per $1 because the Amex Gold card does not earn bonus points on on-site hotel purchases.

Park Hyatt Toronto Joni Restaurant Bar
Restaurants within hotels may code differently than anticipated. Image Credit: Nick Ellis

As another example, I went to an ice cream shop within the last month for a little after-dinner sweet treat. Normally, ice cream parlors are coded as dining, so I used my Amex Gold card to pay the roughly $10 charge.

After the charge posted, I noticed I hadn’t received the bonus I expected and that it was coded as a “business service” rather than dining. I would have earned more had I charged the ice cream to a card that earns 2x points on all purchases, regardless of category.

I estimate that over the years, I’ve lost out on about 15,000 points on purchases I thought would earn me extra points but didn’t. This isn’t an insignificant amount, and I would have been much better off charging my purchases to a card that earns 2 points per $1 on everything, rather than risking a higher multiplier only to have the charge post to an entirely different category.

How I Handle Missing Bonus Points

On some occasions, I’ve called the credit card issuer to request a manual adjustment of the points I believe I should’ve earned. Not all card companies are willing to do this.

Capital One, for example, has never been willing to offer more rewards than were originally awarded. They tell me that they have to rely on the merchant category code submitted with the transaction, which may not reflect the service provided.

Chase has been very good about providing the missing points. I was in Sydney a few years ago and purchased a ship ticket that I expected to code as travel. The purchase was coded as “marine services” instead, so I called Chase and asked them to look into it. As a courtesy, they provided 2 extra points per $1, a difference of about 1,600 points. While I don’t make it a habit to request an adjustment for every purchase, I call and ask if there’s a large number of points at stake.

American Express has been inconsistent with courtesy adjustments. It seems like American Express has cracked down in recent years on providing compensation.

Bottom Line:

In my experience, Chase is the best bank for helping to provide missing points if you can substantiate that a purchase didn’t code correctly.

When I Know Charges Will Post Correctly

There are plenty of times when I put charges on cards that earn multipliers because I am confident they’ll post correctly.

Take, for example, a stay at a Hyatt. In my experience, Hyatt hotel charges consistently post as Hyatt purchases. I’ll earn the additional 4 points per $1 spent at Hyatt hotels on The World of Hyatt Credit Card.

American Express Membership Rewards

Major brands like these seem to almost always code consistently, so there’s no need to worry about potentially losing out on points by using a card that would earn less.

Tips for Getting the Most Points

If I have a large transaction and don’t know how it will code, I sometimes ask the merchant to charge only a small amount first so I can see how it posts, then charge the remainder later.

If I can see that the charge didn’t code as I thought it would, I have time to switch the credit card to another one that may earn more points. This strategy only works in limited scenarios and only when the merchant is flexible with your payment. It doesn’t usually work for on-demand purchases of goods or services, since full payment is normally required on the spot.

Amex Platinum Card Apple Pay
Purchasing an airline ticket directly with an airline usually codes as intended. Image Credit: Upgraded Points LLC

Depending on the product or merchant, I may ask friends, family, and other points enthusiasts whether they have experience with a specific purchase. Others may have made similar purchases at a specific store, and they can tell me how the charge appears on their credit cards. But the same merchant may be categorized differently across payment networks or issuers.

For merchants I frequent, I keep a running list on my phone of how they code. This is a pretty tedious process, but there are several theaters, merchants, and other places I go to often that have coded oddly, and I want to keep track of it for future purchases.

AwardWallet has a tool where you can enter the merchant name to check how it will be coded. Some merchants are not listed, though I’ve generally found the website to be pretty accurate, but be precise in your search. For example, at Walt Disney World in Orlando, dining at an on-property restaurant is coded differently than purchasing a ticket.

My Favorite Cards for Everyday Spending

When I don’t know the merchant’s category and want to put the charge on a card that earns well on all purchases, I’ll usually use one of two cards.

The Bilt Palladium Card (rates & fees) earns 2 Bilt Points for every $1 spent and offers the option to earn 4% Bilt Cash on everyday transactions (offer terms). I like to transfer my Bilt Points to Hyatt for free night stays, and it’s one of the quickest ways to amass Hyatt points outside of actual hotel stays. This card typically stays at the front of my wallet and is the one I use most for daily spending.

Rewards Center

Capital One Miles

It earns 2 Capital One miles per $1 spent, which can be transferred to a number of partners, though I prefer to use them to cover miscellaneous travel expenses.

Final Thoughts

I wish there were a card I could use for everything without worrying about spending multipliers, but I’ve found it much easier over time to put uncertain expenses on a card with a good flat rewards rate rather than risk missing a category bonus.

My strategy has evolved over the years to put more purchases on a credit card that earns well across the board, rather than trying to figure out bonus categories or hoping something posts correctly.
