What Is Priority Pass?

Priority Pass Lounge - The Club at San Jose, CA
The Club at San Jose. Image Credit: Priority Pass

Priority Pass is an independent lounge program that provides members access to over 1,200 airport lounge locations (and/or restaurants) in over 500 cities worldwide.

If you have a membership, you can utilize each participating lounge regardless of the airline you’re flying, the class of your ticket, or your membership (or lack thereof) in any frequent flyer club.

How to Get Membership

Via Credit Card Member Benefit

The best way to acquire membership is to have a credit card that offers Priority Pass Select as a member benefit.

What is Priority Pass Select?

Priority Pass Select is the membership plan/card you’re given when you receive your membership through a U.S. financial institution (e.g. your bank account or a credit card). If you do not receive your membership through a credit card, you’re simply considered to have a standard membership.

The following credit cards include Priority Pass Select as a cardholder benefit, and for each card below you can bring up to 2 guests in with you, complimentary.

The Platinum Card® from American Express - There's currently a welcome bonus of 60,000 points after spending $5,000 in your first 3 months. This is our favorite card for getting into 1,200+ airport lounges worldwide (including Priority Pass) and we get about $2,700+ in value from the card every year.

Plus, get up to $200 in Uber credits annually ($15 per month and a $20 bonus in December) — and up to $200 in annual credit for airline incidental charges (e.g. baggage fees). For rates and fees of the Platinum Card, click here.
The Business Platinum Card® from American Express - Right now, there's a HUGE welcome bonus of up to 100,000 points. We get ~$5,525+ in value per year by leveraging many of the benefits & perks.

This is the best business card for lounge access as you'll get into 1,200+ airport lounges worldwide. For rates and fees of the Business Platinum, click here.
Chase Sapphire Reserve® - This is a premium travel rewards card with a higher annual fee, but it'll get you into a lot of airport lounges (Priority Pass). There's also a $300 travel credit per year. The current sign up bonus is 50,000 points.
Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card - Earn 125,000 Hilton Honors Bonus Points after you spend $2,000 in purchases on the Card within your first 3 months of Card membership (Terms Apply.) Priority Pass Select Membership is included with the card and you'll get 10 free lounge visits every year once enrolled. For rates and fees of the Amex Surpass Card, click here.

Hot Tip: Priority Pass memberships from U.S.-issued American Express cards no longer include restaurants (“non-lounge airport experiences”).

In addition, the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card and the Citi Prestige® Card also offer Priority Pass lounge access for the cardholder and up to 2 guests, too.

Enrollment is REQUIRED!

If you receive a Priority Pass Select membership through one of the above credit cards, you’re required to officially enroll to utilize your benefits. You cannot simply show your credit card and expect entry, especially since Priority Pass is notoriously strict on requiring a valid membership card or digital membership card to enter.

You should refer to your membership guide or contact your credit card’s customer service staff if you’re having trouble figuring out how to enroll.

Alternatively: Register/Join

If you don’t have a credit card that includes Priority Pass Select as a member benefit, you can sign up for a membership plan on the Priority Pass website. The pricing varies by country and desired plan benefits.

Priority Pass Membership Tiers

As you can see, there are 3 membership tiers:

  • The Standard plan has a $99 annual fee. Customers must also pay an additional $32 each time they visit a lounge.
  • The Standard Plus plan has a $299 annual fee and customers receive 10 “free” visits. Each additional visit thereafter is $32.
  • The Prestige plan has a $429 annual fee and customers receive all visits “free.”

On all plans, each guest will cost $32, and the number of guests is subject to each specific lounge’s policy.

Hot Tip: As of October 1, 2018, Priority Pass increased the rates on their Standard Plus and Prestige membership tiers as well as the rate for chargeable visits. These changes are reflected in the pricing structure noted here.

Not Sure Which Plan Is Right for You?

Check out this handy table based on how many times you might visit a Priority Pass Lounge each year:

StandardStandard PlusPrestigeSelect (Credit Card Benefit)
1 visit$131$299
$429
FREE
(with your annual credit card membership fee)
5 visits$259$299
10 visits$419$299
15 visits$579$459
20 visits$739$569

As mentioned previously, it’s most lucrative to have Priority Pass Select, which means FREE access to thousands of lounges worldwide via one of the credit cards likely already in your wallet.

You can also see that visiting one of their lounges just 5 times makes considering the Standard Plus plan worth it. If you’ve signed up for Standard, any number of visits past 5 will end up costing you more than if you had purchased the Standard Plus to begin with.

The Prestige Plan is only your best bet if you plan to visit one of their lounges more than 14 times in 1 year. That’s a lot of visits… if you really think about it, why not get a credit card that already includes Priority Pass Select as well as a multitude of other cost-saving benefits, rewards, and perks?

25th Anniversary Promotion

Priority Pass 25th Anniversary

As of June 1, 2019, Priority Pass still has a live link for a special discount on all membership plans to celebrate its 25th anniversary. To take advantage of this promotion, you must sign up through this link.

This promotion is good for:

  • 25% off Standard membership
  • 20% off Standard Plus membership
  • 10% off Prestige membership

Hot Tip: You’ll find the page initially displays pricing in GBP (£). Click SELECT under your desired plan and the next page asks you to “select your residence.” Once this is done, the plan appears in your appropriate currency of choice with the discount applied.

Priority Pass Membership Benefits

Main Benefits

Obviously, the point of having a Priority Pass membership is to gain access to airport lounges. Priority Pass reports that they currently partner with over 1,000 lounges worldwide in more than 500 cities across 130 countries.

In the U.S. alone, there are over 80 lounges or lounge alternatives that members can take advantage of (and we list them all below).

Priority Pass also boasts a dedicated team that’s working hard to add more lounges each month. In May 2019, 12 new lounges (or lounge alternatives) were added; in April 2019 they added 17 and in March 2019 they added 14.

What Does a Priority Pass Lounge Offer?

Per the FAQ page, members receive the following main benefits:

  • Access to 1,000+ lounges worldwide
  • Complimentary drinks, refreshments, and pre-flight bites including alcohol (in most lounges)
  • Space to work or relax in a place that feels like home
  • Free Wi-Fi in most lounges
  • Comfortable seats and quiet spaces
  • The latest magazines and newspapers
  • Power sockets to give your devices a boost
  • Conference rooms, showers, beds, and spa facilities in select lounges

More on these in the “General Amenities” section below.

How Do I Access a Lounge?

To access a Priority Pass lounge, members must present a membership card.

Most lounges now accept a digital membership card that can be accessed via the Priority Pass app. However, be sure to check the requirements of the specific lounge you wish to visit before arriving — in some cases, the lounge will require a physical membership card.

What About Guests?

Priority Pass members are allowed to bring guests into most lounges unless otherwise stated on the lounge directory/information page. The number of guests allowed is variable per lounge, often subject to space/capacity constraints, and may depend on if you have the Select or Standard membership.

If you obtained a Priority Pass membership directly from Priority Pass, as of October 1, 2018, the guest access price will be $32 per guest (just $5 more than it used to be), per visit. This guest fee will be charged directly to your nominated payment card.

Priority Pass also states that if you joined the program via a third party such as a card issuer or other partner, guest fees can vary.

For example, some of the more popular travel rewards credit cards give you complimentary guest access:

Priority Pass App

Priority Pass App

The Priority Pass app is available for Apple, Android, or Blackberry users to download on their smartphones. This app is free and includes access to your digital membership card. Additionally, the app provides users the ability to search for lounges, rate lounges, and access their visit history.

Specific to each lounge, users can find lounge images, hours, and amenities offered. Additionally, Priority Pass is working on Flight Alerts (still in beta at this time). The app works offline, but be sure to refresh the app regularly for the most updated information.

Other Benefits

Restaurant (i.e. “Lounge Alternatives”) Discounts: Priority Pass offers special restaurant discounts at specific airport locations. Typically, the discount equates to $28 off the final bill per person, per visit.

For example, the current lounge alternatives at PDX are Portland’s Capers Cafe Le Bar and House Spirits Distillery. All restaurant/bar locations are included in the Priority Pass lounge directory.

Note: Priority Pass memberships from US-issued American Express cards, including the Amex Platinum and Amex Business Platinum, no longer include Priority Pass restaurant access (“non-lounge airport experiences”).

Family/Partner Pass: Priority Pass doesn’t advertise it boldly, but they do offer a Partner Standard Membership at half price. They require that members contact their Membership Services team for more information.

Referral Bonuses: Through a special referral link, Priority Pass members can refer friends and receive free guest visits in return. Plus, your friends get 10% off their membership as a perk. There is no limit to the number of friends you can refer.

IHG Partnership: Priority Pass members also receive benefits/discounts with IHG. The Priority Pass website states, “Taking advantage of these discounts is easy. Simply go to the IHG website, available from your Priority Pass membership portal, and supply your Priority Pass membership number. The discount will be applied to the total in the cart when checking out.”

Avis Partnership: Priority Pass members can join Avis Preferred Plus for free (an upgraded form of the standard Avis program). The upgraded perks include “priority service,” the highest possible priority for car availability, single upgrades, a free additional driver benefit, and a voucher for a free weekend in Europe after 3 rentals.

Final Thoughts

If you’re considering membership and you travel often, it’s a lot more lucrative to sign up for one of the credit cards mentioned above. Each of these cards provides additional cost-saving benefits to frequent flyers, so the value will outweigh simply signing up for a direct membership alone.

Priority Pass is consistently expanding their lounge options, meaning you’ll have a decent choice for lounge access at most places you fly.
*We’ll update this list as regularly as possible so that you’ve got the most recent information.

Priority Pass Lounge Guide

FAQ

What is Priority Pass and how does it work?

Priority Pass is the world’s largest independent airport lounge access program. Members have access to over 1,300 airport experiences in over 500 cities and 143 countries.

How much does a Priority Pass Select membership cost?

You can purchase a membership directly from the Priority Pass website for $99 (Standard Membership), $249 (Standard Plus Membership), or $429 (Prestige Membership) per year.

The Standard Membership allows you and any guests traveling with you to access any Priority Pass lounge for $32 per person. A Standard Plus Membership gives you 10 free visits each year and then $32 per visit, per person. Finally, a Prestige Membership gives the member unlimited free visits but you will still need to pay $32 per guest visit.

How can you get Priority Pass for free?

There are many different travel credit card options that include a Priority Pass as a perk for holding the card. Some of our recommended options are the Chase Sapphire Reserve Card (Cardholder plus 2 guests can enter for free, then $27 per guest after that); the Amex Platinum (Cardholder plus 2 guests can enter for free, $32 per guest after that.) and the Hilton Aspire card (Cardholder plus 2 guests can enter for free, $32 per guest after that.)

How many lounges are in the Priority Pass network?

There are over 1,300 airport experiences in over 500 cities and 143 countries.

  1. In actual use, this has little benefit. They advertise all these lounges, but when you go to them you are told they are not accepting PP customers due to ‘capacity constraints’. However, those constraints don’t exist if you buy a pass directly from the lounge or have another membership. PP customers are the lowest tier and are often turned away even during hours advertised as available. Buyer Beware!

@AP, Although what you are saying is sometimes the case, it is usually in fairly crowded lounges located within the US. Alaska Air Lounges come to mind and they are actually leaving the program in Seattle because they weren’t able to accommodate PP guests with any regularity.

I have never had an issue getting in to a foreign PP lounge and have used them in 30+ countries over the past several years. In addition, the restaurants do not limit PP access. If they have tables available, you can sit and eat.

It can be frustrating when you are expecting a lounge and can’t get in, but I would urge you to keep trying, especially when traveling internationally. Some of the foreign PP lounges can be quite nice.

  2. As of April 19, The Club at PHX will no longer accept PP.

    • Hey Randy – thanks for the heads up! We try to do an update on this piece 1-2 times a month and check priority pass’s official list of inclusions for accuracy! We’ll be updating when it’s no longer available! 🙂

  3. Amex HHonors Aspire and Ascend both offer complimentary Standard Plus PP access.

Thanks for sharing this article. This is a very helpful site. I think that this will definitely help me be able to get a membership.

Thank you for this information, but I find this article confusing. It states that there seem to be no differences between the select and the standard plan, but then later states that with the standard plan visits are $32, but then later again states that it’s good to have select because visits are free. And select is not shown in the picture of the three plans to buy. It appears select is a card benefit only. I wish that the two would have just been kept separate from one another–maybe in two different articles, or just clearly delineated…

    • Hi Kristen… I can see how you’re confused. We’re going to remove the sentence where we state we can see no advertised difference, as you’re correct, the standard plans require a sign-up outside of receiving the membership through a financial institution.

Select isn’t shown in the photo of the memberships you can buy, because you can’t buy it. We state in the article: “Priority Pass Select is the membership plan/card you’re given when you receive your membership through a U.S. financial institution (e.g. your bank account or a credit card).”

The rest of the information should be accurate here. Hope this helps!

  6. This article was very helpful to me. Thanks for sharing it!

  7. I’m still trying to find a Priority pass lounge that is available to me. My recent and future round trip flights include… PHX-SFO,..ORD-PHX,…PHX-MSY,…PHX-MKE. Come on,…..nothing in Phoenix? Even at an airport with a lounge location, it can be in another terminal….. ( ORD,…SFO )

    I’ll keep looking…..

      Hi Gary,

Yes, unfortunately the only airport in your list that accepts priority pass is O’Hare, at the Air France and Swissport lounges in Terminal 5.

  8. Since you acknowledge that Priority Pass will stop providing access to its restaurant locations, you should remove those locations from your list, or at least note that they will be unavailable starting August 1. This decision was enough to make me drop my AMEX platinum Card which includes Priority Pass as a benefit.

    • Christine Krzyszton · July 15, 2019 · Reply

Hi BobG. Priority Pass access to lounge alternative restaurants is still currently available beyond August 1st, just not for Priority Pass Select Membership that comes with American Express issued cards.

  9. I am finding more and more restrictions on lounge access. I just accessed the lounge in SFO this morning and was initially told that they do not accept arrivals, but she did let me in as an exception because the lounge was empty. After approx. an hour, I was approached in the lounge and told that there was a 1 hour maximum stay on arrivals. I’ve been in this lounge many times, but never heard that. The lounge was empty at that time also, so it wasn’t an issue of overcrowding. Just a heads up.

    • Katie Seemann · September 9, 2019 · Reply

      Hi Jenn,
Thanks for sharing your experience. Not allowing access for arrivals or limiting your time if you’re coming in on an arriving flight (without a connection) isn’t uncommon. It’s too bad they didn’t let you stay though since the lounge was empty.

  10. I want to get Priority Pass for free. I think that this article will surely help me. I will definitely follow what you said. This is a very helpful site for business owner like me.
