Alaska Airlines Overview

Alaska Airlines Atmos Rewards is the latest iteration of Alaska Airlines’ award-winning Mileage Plan program. Hawaiian Airlines is also set to join Atmos Rewards in October 2025, finalizing the merger between the two carriers.

In the meantime, Alaska customers can access a revamped program that promises flexibility and value. But does it actually deliver on these promises? With a vast partner network, including Oneworld alliance members, Atmos Rewards remain valuable and flexible.

Members continue to earn rewards based on distance flown rather than dollars spent, and premium cabin awards are redeemable on Alaska’s partner airlines such as Cathay Pacific, STARLUX, and others. Plus, there are now more ways to earn points than before!

The new program has both drawbacks and advantages compared to Alaska Mileage Plan. Here’s a look at the new Alaska Atmos Rewards program and all the ways to maximize this program:

Here, you can view your trips, mileage activity, wallet, and discount/companion certificates.

Points Expiration

Atmos Rewards points don’t expire. This is a step up from the Mileage Plan program, which included the stipulation that points may deactivate after 24 months of inactivity. However, you don’t have to worry about that with Atmos Rewards.

Alaska Airlines Atmos Rewards is one of the highest-regarded programs among travelers for its mileage earning rates and benefits.

Compared to competitors, Atmos Rewards is lucrative for earning points based on distance flown rather than spending.

Atmos Rewards elite status is especially strong on companion benefits and customer service.

Earning Atmos Rewards Elite Status

Alaska Airlines Atmos Rewards elite status is more straightforward than some of its competitors, and there is no dollar spend threshold.

You can earn status by any 1 of 3 ways:

  • 1 status point per mile flown on award travel (including partners)
  • 25%-350% status points based on miles flown on Alaska and qualifying partner airlines
  • Eligible spending on an Alaska co-branded credit cards (up to 1 status point per $2 spent)
  • Eligible spending with partner programs (1,000 status point per 3,000 points earned)

Members also earn class of service bonuses, which range from 25% to 150% in economy and 150% to 350% for first class. This means cheap first class fares can be a shortcut to earning elite status.

Other Hotel Partner Credit Cards

A few other hotel programs will let you transfer points to Alaska Airlines. However, this is almost always a poor use of hotel points.

Unless you are really in a bind, save your hotel points for award stays at your destination, where they’ll likely be worth more.

Awards on Partner Airlines

Alaska Airlines standardized its award charts, doing away with the previous system in which each partner had its own award chart. That also meant the elimination of several high-value redemptions. There are now three award charts, depending on where you’re traveling to:

The following award chart applies to partner award flights from the U.S. to the Americas, as well as within the Americas.*

Hot Tip:

Alaska Airlines has fantastic partner awards that can provide incredible value. See our article on the best ways to redeem Alaska Airlines Atmos Rewards for ideas.

Non-Flight Awards

Finally, points can be used outside of the airline, including for rental cars and vacations. Through the Unlocked program, you can even redeem Alaska points for onboard Wi-Fi, sporting events, and more.

Members can also donate their points to charity through Care Points. Participating organizations include the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Fisher House Foundation, The Nature Conservancy and disaster relief organizations.

You typically will not get the most value from these redemptions. We recommend using your Atmos Rewards points for flights instead.
