Canceling a flight can be a very frustrating and expensive experience. Knowing the ins and outs of the airline’s cancellation policy can save you quite a bit of time and money if you do end up needing to cancel.

If you happened to book your flight, or are planning to book a flight, with Spirit Airlines you’re in the right place! Here’s all the information you need to navigate their cancellation policy and determine what policies apply to your situation.

Cancellation Policies Due to COVID-19

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Spirit is waiving change and cancellation fees for all guests who booked travel by March 31, 2021. If you cancel your flight, you will receive a full purchase price credit instantly towards future travel.

View the full policy here. If you booked via a third party, refer to your booking provider for its policies.

With cancellation policies due to COVID-19 being ever-changing, for the most up-to-date policies across all airlines, please refer to our COVID-19 Airline Cancellations article.

Spirit’s Cancellation Policy: Flights Paid With Cash or Points

All customers have 24 hours from the time of their original booking to cancel their reservation without being charged a cancellation fee, regardless of the fare selected, as long as the ticket is purchased greater than 7 days (168 hours) or more before the scheduled departure date.

Here are the current cancellation charges:

Days from DepartureFee Amount
0 to 6 days from departure$79
7 to 14 days from departure$59
15 to 59 days from departure$39
60+ days from departureFree

Standard Ticket

If you wish you cancel your standard ticket you must do so within the initial 24-hour window or more than 60 days from departure to avoid being charged. Otherwise, the cancellation fee varies based on how many days from departure your flight is. Your refund, after the cancellation fee, will be issued as future travel credit that can only be used with Spirit Airlines, and only for the passenger the credit was issued for.

Flight Flex Tickets

When you add the Flight Flex add-on to your reservation, you’ll be able to modify your itinerary once, online, up to 24 hours before your departure with no modification charges. Unfortunately, cancellations are not covered as a modification. So if you do need to cancel, the fees are the same as a standard ticket

Your refund, after the cancellation fee, will be issued as future travel credit, that can only be used with Spirit Airlines, and only for the passenger the credit was issued for.

Award Ticket

If you’ve booked a ticket with your Spirit miles and need to cancel it outside of the 24-hour window, the standard cancellation fee based on your date of departure will apply. Cancellation can only be done over the phone and then your miles will be redeposited back into your account.

Spirit’s Change Policy: Flights Paid With Cash or Points

As with cancellations, all customers will have 24 hours from the time of their original booking to change their reservation without being charged a fee, regardless of fare selected, as long as the ticket is purchased greater than 7 days (168 hours) or more before the scheduled departure date.

Here are the current change charges:

Ticket Type Days from DepartureFee Amount
Standard or Award Ticket0 to 6 days from departure$79
7 to 14 days from departure$59
15 to 59 days from departure$39
60+ days from departureFree
Flight FlexUp to 24 hours before departureFree
Same-Day Changes$99

Standard or Award Ticket

If you need to make a change to your standard or award ticket, you must do so within the initial 24-hour window or more than 60 days from departure. Otherwise, you have to pay the $39 to $79 change fee. If you are changing your flight to a more expensive option than your original ticket, then you’ll need to pay that price difference as well.

Flight Flex

With Flight Flex, a 1-time free change made online can be made until 24 hours before the time of departure. Customers will still be responsible for any difference in airfare. Keep in mind that you are limited to only 1 change, and Flight Flex is only available for purchase during your initial flight bookings.

The Flight Flex fee is $35 to $45 per ticket at the time of booking, depending on your itinerary. If you know you will need the added flexibility that the Flight Flex add-on provides, this could be a worthwhile expense.

Same-Day Change

If you’re planning to make a same-day change, i.e. standby for an earlier flight option, the fee to do so is $99.

How To Cancel a Spirit Ticket

Step 1: Log into your account and select “my trips” from the top or on the homepage. Then enter your last name and flight confirmation code.

Step 2: This will bring up your reservation summary page. Click “cancel reservation” to cancel your itinerary and get a Future Travel Credit or refund.

Step 3: The final page will show you how much money you are refunded along with any fees associated with canceling your ticket.

If you prefer, you can call in and have a phone agent walk you through the cancellation process for a $10 fee by calling 801-401-2222.

How To Use a Spirit Flight Credit

To redeem your flight credit, simply look for the “Vouchers and Credits” drop-down on the flight purchase page, enter the 17 digit code you received when you canceled your ticket, and select go. Vouchers must be applied to a reservation at the time of booking.

Future travel credits with Spirit can only be used by the passenger they were issued to and are only valid for a single-use with no remaining value after that use. Meaning if you have a $120 travel credit and apply it to a flight that is $90, you will not be able to use the remaining $30 on a future flight.

Spirit travel credits have restricted use during government holidays so be sure to check whether your dates are eligible. Finally, your credit must be booked within 60 days of issuance.

Final Thoughts

Unlike other airlines, there are no good alternatives to get around Spirit cancellation fees. They do not offer fully refundable tickets and even purchasing the Flight Flex add-on is only helpful if you need to change your flight, not cancel.

When there is no way around it, canceling a flight can be a real pain, so consider purchasing your flight with a credit card that provides compensation. Be certain to review fare rules closely so that you know what your options are both at the time of booking, and if you end up needing to cancel.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if I cancel my Spirit flight?

No matter what ticket you’ve purchased, you have 24 hours to cancel from the time you booked for no charge, provided that the flight departure is more than 7 days away.

Otherwise, the fee is $39 to $79 for cancellations of standard, award, and Flight Flex tickets within 60 days of departure. Afterward, you will receive the remainder of your fare, minus the fee, in the form of a credit for use on a future Spirit flight.

Can I cancel a Spirit flight within 24 hours?

Yes, all customers will have 24 hours from the time of their original booking to cancel their reservation without being charged a cancellation fee, regardless of fare selected, as long as it was purchased more than 7 days in advance of the flight.

When do Spirit flight credits expire?

Spirit flight credits expire just 60 days after the day they were issued.

Will Spirit waive my cancellation fees?

A waive of fees really will depend on your reason for canceling the flight. If it’s due to an immediate family member’s death or sickness, or military orders, Spirit may waive your cancellation fees, but they will likely ask for proof, as well.

If you believe you have a legitimate reason to have your cancellation fees waived then it never hurts to call and ask!

Does Spirit charge same-day change fees?

Yes, the same-day change fee with Spirit is $99.

Spirit airlines are saying no refunds due to the coronavirus. Everything will be closed and it was planned for my husband’s birthday. Is this true? Is there a way I can get a refund?

    Reply

    • Hi Johnetta, currently Spirit Airlines’ policy is that flights can be changed without penalty or you can get a credit for future flights valid for 6 months.

As of now, there’s no blanket policy allowing you to cancel flights.

Spirit claims that those with flight cancellations due to COVID-19 will be given a flight credit that is good for 180 days from credit issuance. The actual credit form they issue says that the flight must be booked within 60 days of issuance. What good is a 6 month credit when you only have 60 days to book the flight ?? They have failed to respond to my numerous emails.

  7. What if Spirit cancels your flight? It sounds like they are only interested in offering a credit and I was under the impression that if an airline cancels your flight, you are to receive a refund?

    Reply

    • Hi Mary,

Yes, if Spirit cancels your flight then you are entitled to a refund. You do not need to accept future flight credit in lieu of your money back.

      Reply

      • So what are you saying is that no matter what I do I can’t get my refund if I canceled my flight? So the money that’s in the reservation credit can’t go back into my debit card?

        Reply

        • Hi Semi,

If you cancel your flight within 24 hours of booking, then you can receive a full refund back to your debit card. If more than 24 hours have passed, you will have to pay a $90-$100 cancellation fee, and the remaining funds will be issued as future travel credit with Spirit Airlines, not to your debit card.

Spirit changed my flight dates and times. They also changed me from non-stop flights to ones with a layover, extending the travel times from 3 1/2 hours to over 10 hours leaving and over 8 hours coming home. Can I get a refund in this circumstance?

I texted Spirit at 48763. They offered to either refund my money or give me a reservation credit which could be used to travel within 12 months along with a $50 voucher which would also be valid for 12 months.

  10. I have booked 4 seats but my husband can no longer travel with us. So I need to cancel only his itinerary and keep the other 3 as is. I can only see the option to cancel the entire party. I looked and looked, but can’t figure out how to only cancel my husband’s ticket. Any idea?

    • Hi Viviana,

If you contact the Spirit customer service line they can assist you with just canceling your husbands ticket and leaving the rest of the itinerary intact. Their number is 1-855-728-3555.

  11. Spirit issued me credit for a future flight but has since stopped flying to my home city and now they cost almost twice as much as American which flies out of my hometown and I would have to drive two hours to get a Spirit flight.

Does Spirit offer full refunds if they change the flight itinerary? We have a group of 8 people traveling to Mexico from Detroit the middle of April. We had a lot of issues to get all all on the same flight there and back without a layover. Now they are changing our flight and we have a layover both ways. On top of that, we now get back 4 hours later the day when we return which now causes an issue with my work schedule.

    Reply

    • Hi Scott,

Usually, Spirit will not offer a refund for a schedule change of 4 hours, but it might still be worth calling and asking to see if there is anything they can do. If they do refund you though, it is likely it will be in the form of future flight credit and not to your original method of payment.

  13. Are bag fees and/or purchased seats included in the credit if I cancel the flight? or are this non-refundable purchases?

  14. I just cancelled a Spirit flight scheduled for 5/29 to 6/2 (today is 4/30) and wasn’t charged any fee. Was immediately able to use the full amount of the credit for another flight (actually the same flight at a cheaper price).

Its ridiculous you cannot get a refund (when the seat will fill up quick) are charged a cancellation fee even though you’re not getting a refund and only able to get reservation credit. What a rip off.

I bought a ticket to travel from Puerto Rico to Fort Lauderdale and to Armenia. Due to the Spirts issues in the last few days, I had to cancel my trip. Spirit gave me a credit. I need just my money refund. Can they do it?

    Reply

    • Hi Fernando,

Unfortunately, Spirit seldomly refunds passengers’ tickets, and almost always just offers credit for a future flight. You could certainly call them and ask for a refund, but I think it is unlikely that they will do so.

I was issued a credit for flights back in March of 2020 due to Covid. Spirit extended them to December 31, 2021. We won’t be able to travel by then. If I book flights for December and then cancel them, will I be issued a new credit at that point which would be valid for 60 days?

    Reply

    • Hi Brooke,

Spirit travel credits are non-refundable. So if you use them to book your flight, and then cancel, you would not receive a new credit.
