If you stay at a particular hotel brand, even occasionally, it pays to join the hotel’s loyalty program and take advantage of the benefits.

Having elite status in that hotel program provides even more valuable benefits, including upgraded rooms, elevated points earning, and on-site privileges like free Wi-Fi, early check-in, or late checkout, among other perks.

Usually, you need to stay at that hotel chain frequently to reach elite status, but you can receive complimentary status with the Platinum Card® from American Express and The Business Platinum Card® from American Express. Both cards offer complimentary Hilton Honors Gold and Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status upon enrollment — no stays or spending required.

Today, we’re focusing on Hilton Honors Gold elite status and the benefits you can expect to receive after enrolling.

How To Enroll and Activate Your Hilton Elite Status

The complimentary Hilton Honors Gold elite status from the Amex Platinum card and Amex Business Platinum card is not automatic; you must enroll to activate it. Fortunately, you can accomplish this easily.

Log in to your online card account, go to the Rewards and Benefits section, then select Benefits. You’ll find the Hilton Honors Gold Status benefit when you scroll down the page. Click on Learn More.

After clicking Learn More, you can read about the benefit and select Enroll Now. You’ll see the following screen:

If you have a Hilton Honors number, insert it, check the terms and conditions box, and click Enroll Now. If you do not have a Hilton Honors number, you can leave the Hilton Honors number box blank, and you will be directed to enroll.

Once enrolled, you can expect to see the new status reflected in your Hilton Honors account within 3 to 5 business days. If it does not reflect within 10 days, call the number on the back of your card.

Complimentary Hilton Honors Gold status is valid as long as your associated American Express card is active, and there are no Hilton stay requirements to maintain it.

Combining Hilton Honors Elite Status With Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts Program Benefits

Booking Hilton properties through the American Express Fine Hotels + Resorts (FHR) program allows you to leverage your Hilton Honors Gold elite status on top of the FHR program’s benefits.

In addition to the benefits of both programs, you also earn Hilton Honors points and 5x Membership Rewards points — plus stay credits toward earning higher status — when booking Hilton properties within Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection (THC) using your Amex Platinum card or Amex Business Platinum card.

While most hotel bookings through a third-party website, such as Hotels.com or Expedia, don’t count toward earning Hilton points or stay credits, experience tells us that FHR stays will, as long as you add your Hilton Honors number to the reservation in advance.

Fine Hotels + Resorts Program Benefits

Here are the benefits you can expect to receive through the American Express FHR program during a stay of 1 night or more:

  • Room upgrade on arrival, when available
  • Check in as early as noon, when available
  • Daily breakfast for 2 people
  • Receive an on-site experience credit worth at least $100, which varies by hotel but may cover dining, activities, or the spa
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi
  • Guaranteed 4 p.m. late checkout

As you can see, combining Hilton Honors benefits with FHR (or The Hotel Collection) benefits could significantly enhance the stay experience.

How To Find Hilton FHR Properties on AmexTravel.com

After logging in to your online account and accessing AmexTravel.com, you’ll arrive at the booking page. Click on the option to “explore properties by region, collection, or brand.”

Select the property you wish to book and use your card and/or Membership Rewards points to prepay for the reservation. Bookings where you choose to pay at the hotel during check-in aren’t eligible for the annual prepaid hotel credit on the Amex Platinum card.

Be sure to add your Hilton Honors number to the reservation during the booking process on AmexTravel.com. You can also follow up with the hotel property to add the number if you forget. Once you have added your Hilton Honors number, you should see the reservation in your Hilton Honors account.

Using Statement Credits at Hilton Properties

Amex Platinum Card and Amex Business Platinum Card: Up to $600 Prepaid Hotel Credit

The Amex Platinum card and Amex Business Platinum card come with an annual prepaid hotel credit of up to $600 (paid out in 2 semiannual $300 credits) when you book a prepaid stay with Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection. Note that FHR stays can be for as few as 1 night, but THC requires bookings of at least 2 nights.

Prepay for your stay in full using your card, Membership Rewards points, or a combination of both and you should receive the credit shortly after booking.

Hot Tip:

The $600 annual prepaid hotel credit included with the Amex Platinum card and Amex Business Platinum card can be used for a 2-night stay or longer with The Hotel Collection. The Hotel Collection benefits include a $100 property credit, noon check-in, and late checkout (when available), as well as a room upgrade at check-in (when available).

Amex Business Platinum Card: Up to $200 in Hilton Credit

Amex Business Platinum cardholders can earn up to $200 back each calendar year ($50 per quarter) for Hilton purchases. Enrollment and a Hilton for Business membership are required.

The credit can be used quarterly for eligible purchases at Hilton properties, including room rates and incidentals (such as restaurant or spa expenses) charged to your room.

Additional Cards With Hilton Honors Elite Status

The Amex Platinum card and the Amex Business Platinum card are premium travel rewards cards with a long list of benefits, statement credits, and travel insurance. However, these aren’t the only cards with complimentary Hilton Honors elite status.

A Hilton co-branded American Express card can provide Hilton Honors elite status as well as additional benefits, including elevated earnings at Hilton properties and on everyday spending, annual hotel night certificates, and more.

Here are the Hilton-branded cards that come with complimentary Hilton Honors elite status:

In addition to complimentary Hilton Honors elite status, you can spend your way to a higher level of status using these cards. For example, spending $40,000 on eligible purchases with the Hilton Surpass card or the Hilton Business Amex card in a calendar year will upgrade your status from Gold to Diamond.

Final Thoughts

It’s always nice to double-dip rewards to receive additional on-site hotel benefits. Fortunately, the American Express FHR program explicitly allows this.

Plus, you earn 5x Membership Rewards points on your booking and Hilton Honors points and stay credits along the way.

Although not as plentiful, combining Hilton Honors Gold elite status benefits with The Hotel Collection benefits could be worthwhile. However, Hilton Honors benefits with The Hotel Collection are not guaranteed. You also need to book a minimum of 2 nights with THC — something FHR doesn’t require.

It’s worth noting that, ultimately, the hotel administers the combination of either program’s benefits at its own discretion. At a minimum, you can claim complimentary Hilton Gold status with the Amex Platinum card and Amex Business Platinum card at no cost to enjoy valuable benefits on your hotel stays.
