The Business Platinum Card® from American Express launched in 2002 and has been reshaped multiple times over the past 2 decades. This page tracks how the card’s benefits, credits, and annual fee have evolved since its debut.

Plenty has shifted since its debut with a $300 annual fee. We’ll walk through every major iteration of the Amex Business Platinum card from 2002 to today.

As of 2026

The Amex Business Platinum card now carries an $895 annual fee (rates & fees) and delivers more than $3,500 in annual value through travel credits, business statement credits, elite status perks, and Membership Rewards earning rates (Source: American Express). That’s a far cry from the card’s debut, so let’s rewind to 2002 and walk forward to get a clear picture.

2002 Launch

American Express rolled out the Amex Business Platinum card in 2002 as a premium card built for small business owners. The annual fee was $300, which undercut the personal Platinum Card® from American Express of that era.

At launch, the Amex Business Platinum card came with:

That’s a lean benefit set by today’s standards, but for 2002, it put a premium travel option on the table for business owners who had previously been stuck choosing between using consumer charge cards for business expenses and bare-bones business cards.

2003 to 2009

Through the back half of the 2000s, Amex began filling out the card’s travel profile. Cardmembers gained access to a larger inventory of Fine Hotels + Resorts properties as the program expanded, and the Premium Global Assist® Hotline was added, providing a way to handle emergencies while traveling abroad. The annual fee climbed to $395 during this period, reflecting the added perks without altering the card’s core positioning as a travel-first product.

2010 to 2014

This stretch brought several of the card’s most recognizable perks. The up-to-$200 annual airline fee credit was introduced, reimbursing cardholders for incidental charges like checked bags, inflight food, and seat upgrades with a single preselected airline. Amex added access to The Hotel Collection, giving members a second prepaid-hotel booking channel with more properties than Fine Hotels + Resorts, though with a different set of perks and a minimum 2-night stay.

Other additions during this era included the 35% points rebate on select flight redemptions (up to 1 million points per year) when using Pay With Points, Priority Pass lounge access upon enrollment, an application fee credit for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck, and the removal of foreign transaction fees. The annual fee moved up to $450 (rates & fees).

American Express also opened the first Centurion Lounge in Las Vegas in 2013, and those with the Amex Business Platinum card had access.

Our comparison of The Hotel Collection and Fine Hotels + Resorts can help you understand the benefits associated with these programs.

2015 to 2019

Halfway through the decade, Amex overhauled the card’s earning structure. Cardholders began earning 5x Membership Rewards points on flights booked directly with airlines or through AmexTravel.com, plus 1.5x points on purchases of $5,000 or more. Amex also added up to $200 in Dell statement credits, one of the first business software perks on the card (enrollment required).

Those 2 additions pushed the Amex Business Platinum card from a travel card with some extras into a rewards workhorse for higher-spending business owners. The card was reissued in its now-familiar metal form factor during this period, and the annual fee rose to $595.

2020 to 2024

The pandemic-era refresh was the biggest shakeup the Amex Business Platinum card had seen up to that point. The 1.5x Membership Rewards earning benefit was expanded to cover purchases in select business categories (construction materials, electronic goods retailers, and software/cloud system providers, among others), in addition to the existing $5,000 or higher purchase threshold.

Alongside that, Amex rolled out a wave of new statement credits, some of which may require enrollment:

The annual fee jumped from $595 to $695 as part of the October 2021 refresh, with the new fee applying to existing cardholders at their first renewal on or after January 13, 2022 (Source: American Express). This refresh marked a shift in strategy: Rather than just a premium travel card, the Amex Business Platinum card became a travel and operations card aimed at owners running their businesses on it.

Here’s how the card’s benefits in January 2021 compare to where things stand in 2026:

Amex also added capabilities designed to help businesses operate, including the ability to create virtual cards for vendor-specific or one-time purchases, which reduces the risk of card numbers being exposed in the event of a vendor breach.

No existing benefits were removed in the 2025 update. The annual fee increased from $695 to $895. For cardholders who opened their accounts before September 18, 2025, the new fee took effect at their first renewal on or after December 2, 2025 (Source: American Express).

Final Thoughts

Since 2002, the Amex Business Platinum card has grown from a lean premium card with no preset spending limit* into a layered product with earning rates, business credits, travel credits, elite status, and lounge access all stacked together.

The annual fee has nearly tripled over that stretch, but so has the list of benefits. No major benefits have been removed outright across the card’s history, though Amex has occasionally restricted or reduced specific perks over time.

For business owners whose spending patterns line up with the card’s credits, the math often still works. For those running lighter expense loads, the higher fee has pushed the calculation closer to the margin. Each person still needs to decide whether the annual fee is worth it in their own situation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the current Amex Business Platinum card benefits?

As of 2026, the Amex Business Platinum card offers up to $600 in prepaid hotel credits, up to $120 in wireless credits, up to $200 in airline fee credits, up to $200 in Hilton credits, up to $209 to cover your CLEAR+ membership fee, up to $250 in Adobe credits, up to $360 in Indeed credits, up to $1,150 in Dell credits, points earning, elite status with Marriott, Hilton, and Leading Hotels of the World, access to Fine Hotels + Resorts and The Hotel Collection, and a credit to cover your Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application fee. It also offers access to a wide range of lounges. Many of these benefits require enrollment.

When did the Amex Business Platinum card benefits start?

The card launched in 2002 with a short list of benefits: no preset spending limit, earning Membership Rewards points, and access to Fine Hotels + Resorts. Since then, the card has increased its annual fee and added perks multiple times, with the most recent update in September 2025.

Is the Amex Business Platinum card worth it?

The annual fee is close to $900, and that gives many people sticker shock. If you can use the card’s benefits, they easily offset that number, but some of them require effort to use, and not all of them will align with your spending and travel habits. Crunch the numbers to see if you’re getting sufficient value out of the credits, lounge access, and earning rates to justify the annual fee.

What are the Amex Business Platinum card semiannual credit dates?

Some Amex Business Platinum card benefits are available twice per year, meaning they’re semiannual. For those perks, such as the prepaid hotel credit, you can enjoy half of the benefit from January to June and the other half from July to December each year.

Additionally, the card has 1 quarterly benefit — the Hilton credit — available as up to $50 per quarter. That means you can earn up to $50 in credits from January to March, another from April to June, another credit from July to September, and a final $50 credit from October to December each year.
