Sign-Up Bonus and Earning Miles
Between the great sign-up bonus (see above table) and not having an annual fee for the first year ($95/year after that), the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express has a lot to offer Delta frequent flyers.
Earn 2 miles per $1 spent on purchases made directly with Delta and 1 point per $1 for your other purchases. Your miles never expire!
Benefits of the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express
Delta travelers will delight in the many benefits offered with their convenience in mind.
Paying to check your luggage has made flying more expensive, but you can get your first bag checked free with the card.
This perk also applies for up to 8 other passengers on your reservation. This comes out to a $50 savings per person round-trip, for a total value of $450!
Instead of waiting to board the plane, you’ll get Zone 1 priority boarding on Delta flights. That means you skip ahead of passengers sitting in the main cabin and those flying economy.
Once on board, you’ll get a 20% discount on in-flight purchases. The discount will appear as a statement credit on your credit card bill.
You can also relax before your flight at the Delta Sky Club lounge for only $29. Enjoy this reduced fee for you and up to 2 companions when you hold a same-day airline ticket with any airline and use the card.
Delta Sky Club access includes complimentary drinks and snacks, private restrooms, newspapers and magazines, and satellite TV. Wi-fi access makes it easy to catch up on work while you’re waiting for your next flight.
Other Card Perks: Insurances and Services
Just like other American Express credit cards, the Delta business credit card offers many travel and shopping perks.
When you’re on the road, the car rental loss/damage insurance and global assistance hotline can make you feel more comfortable. Shopping protections like return and purchase protections or extended warranties can protect your pocketbook too!
Plus, find out about the latest ticket presales and cardmember-only events in your city with entertainment access.
Rest easy knowing you won’t be responsible for fraudulent charges when you call the number on the back of your card. With fraud protection, you won’t even have to pay a deductible.
Benefits for Small Businesses
Running a small business can be a lot of work! Reduce some of that stress by taking advantage of the OPEN benefits available with the card.
First, add employee cards and earn more Delta miles. You won’t be charged an annual fee for employee cards, and you’ll have control over spending limits.
Access all your accounts from almost anywhere through the mobile and tablet apps–a useful feature when you’re always on the go. Also, receive your statements and review your purchase history online.
Other helpful services include account alerts to let you know when your payment is due or notify you about fraudulent activity on your card. ReceiptMatch can add receipts to your transactions, and dispute resolution is there if you get into a bind.
OPEN Savings and OPEN Forum
Want to earn more miles for your spending? You already get 2x points for purchases directly through Delta. Additionally, get 2x points on eligible spending with OPEN Savings partners like FedEx, HP.com, and Hertz.
If you don’t want the miles, you can choose to get an automatic 5% discount instead.
When business-related questions come up, it’s good to have someplace to turn for advice.
OPEN Forum is a database of articles and information from industry experts and other business owners, and it’s complimentary with card membership!
Combining Cards for More Value
Consider combining the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express with an American Express personal card for even more value.
For more points, choose a Membership Rewards card that allows you to transfer points to Delta at a 1:1 ratio.
One option is The Platinum Card® from American Express, which includes complimentary access to Delta Sky Clubs. It also earns 5X Membership Rewards® points on flights booked directly with airlines or with American Express Travel and on eligible hotels booked on amextravel.com.
A similar card is The Business Platinum® Card from American Express OPEN which earns 5X Membership Rewards® points on flights and prepaid hotels on amextravel.com. You can also receive 35% points back on all First and Business class flights, with all airlines available through American Express Travel.
Drawbacks of the Card and Alternatives
You really need to fly Delta regularly to get value from the Delta business credit card.
Without flying Delta, you won’t be able to earn as many miles and won’t be able to redeem for Delta flights, which is the redemption option with the highest value.
In that case, you are better off with another business credit card like the Business Green Rewards Card from American Express OPEN.
With it, earn 2x points for travel booked on American Express Travel (not just Delta), and 1x points for everything else. The card also has an annual fee of $95 after the first year.
If you’re looking for a credit card without an annual fee, consider the SimplyCash® Plus Business Credit Card from American Express.
You’ll earn 5% cash-back on wireless telephone services purchased directly from U.S. service providers and U.S. office supply stores, plus 3% on a category of your choice from a list of 8, and 1% cash-back on other purchases.
Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express Conclusion
The value of the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express depends on your travel habits.
If you have a local Delta hub and book travel on the airline regularly, it can be a great business credit card to have in your wallet.
You’ll earn more miles for traveling Delta, plus get all the terrific travel perks like Zone 1 priority boarding, a free checked bag, and the 20% discount on in-flight purchases.
Great Card If
- You prefer Delta Air Lines over other carriers
- You and your employees travel regularly
- You don’t want to bother with earnings categories
Don't Get If
- You want a card with a 0% intro APR offer
- You don’t want to pay an annual fee (after the first year)
- You want more redemption options
U.P. Pro Tips
No matter which business credit card you use, saving money is a good thing.
That’s why you should take advantage of the discounts you get for using the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express – but only if they truly save you money.
For instance, the 20% discount on in-flight purchases is a nice perk.
However, instead of using the discount, check to see if it’s a better deal to pay the reduced fee of $29 to use the Sky Club Lounge. There you can enjoy drinks and snacks before boarding the plane.
How To Use Gold Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express: The Upgraded Way
Best Way To Maximize Points
The fastest way to earn miles with an airline credit card is usually by purchasing airfare, and the same holds true for the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express.
After all, it earns 2x miles for Delta Air Lines purchases.
But what other strategies can your small business employ to earn more points with the card? Let’s take a look at some options for earning Delta miles.
Tip #1: In addition to getting the 20% benefit on in-flight purchases, you get 2x miles on them since these are still purchased from the airline.
The 2x miles also applies to upgrades, baggage fees, and gift cards.
Remember to get employee cards so you earn for their Delta purchases too!
Tip #2: Put as many of your small business expenses on the card as possible to accrue a lot of Membership Rewards points. As we discussed, you’ll get 2x miles for Delta purchases, but that’s not all.
You’ll also earn 1 mile per $1 spent on all of your other expenses. Plus, when you use the card to pay for purchases with OPEN Savings partners you’ll get an additional 2x miles (or 5% off), which can really add up.
Tip #3: Fly Delta and earn 2x miles for using the card, plus another 5x miles for being a SkyMiles member! That’s a total of 7x miles!
If you achieve elite status, you’ll be able to earn even more with extra bonus miles per $1: Silver (2x), Gold (3x), Platinum (4x), and Diamond (6x).
Even better, when you reach Platinum status you get to pick a Choice Benefit (2 with Diamond status). There are several Choice Benefit options, including up to 25,000 bonus miles!
Tip #4: Do you have any other personal or business American Express credit cards that earn Membership Rewards points? Well, you can transfer those points to your Delta SkyMiles account because Delta is a Membership Rewards transfer partner.
Here a few business credit cards that allow you to transfer points to Delta:
- The Business Gold Rewards Card from American Express OPEN
- Business Green Rewards Card from American Express OPEN
- The Business Platinum® Card from American Express OPEN
Tip #5: Earn Delta SkyMiles when you spend the night at a Starwood Preferred Guest hotel. Through the Crossover Rewards Program, you’ll earn 1 mile per $1 at participating SPG hotels.
You can also transfer SPG points to Delta at a 1:1 ratio. Transfer 20,000 miles in one transaction and get 5,000 free bonus miles!
Tip #6: If you’re going to be making retail purchases with your card, try using the SkyMiles online shopping portal to earn extra rewards for your purchases.
Similarly, if you’re taking clients out to dinner, you could look up a restaurant that is part of the Delta Dining program so that you can maximize rewards.
Best Way To Redeem Points
The primary method for redeeming miles earned with the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express is on flights with Delta, Delta partner airlines, and Delta codeshare partners.
Unfortunately, Delta no longer publishes an official award chart, which makes it a bit of a challenge to figure out the lowest price available. We recommend using the old award chart included in our article on How to Redeem Delta SkyMiles for Max Value.
Here are some other options for making the most of your SkyMiles:
Wouldn’t you love a shot to enjoy a more comfortable seat in another class, especially on the way back from a ton of meetings? Well, you can!
With a Mileage Upgrade Award, you can go from the main cabin or Delta Comfort+ to a seat in first class, the new Delta Premium Select, or Delta One.
Upgrade Your Seat
Upgrade your seat during your original booking (at delta.com or with a reservations specialist) and use your SkyMiles to pay the difference between main cabin fare and a business class, first class, or Delta One fare on eligible U.S. flights!
Join Delta Sky Club
Having access to the Delta Sky Club for a discounted price of $29 with a Delta business credit card is an excellent perk. But how about becoming a Sky Club member?
Executive Membership gives you unlimited access (including 2 guests each time you visit) and requires 70,000 miles.
Individual Membership gives you unlimited access for yourself. If you want to bring up to 2 guests, it will cost $29 per guest per visit. You’ll need to redeem 47,000 miles for this option.
Pay With Miles
With The Gold Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card, you can Pay With Miles to reduce the price of a ticket. Start redeeming at 5,000 miles; every 5,000 miles will reduce the cost of your ticket by $50.
Use Miles to Shop
Whether you want to get a magazine subscription, shop the SkyMiles Marketplace, or bid on a once-in-a-lifetime experience, all it takes is the right amount of SkyMiles!
Delta Private Jets
OK, this option is a little more extravagant than the others! But for 2.5 million miles (yes, million), you can redeem a $25,000 Delta Private Jets card! See Private Jet Travel terms and conditions for more info.
Although the card doesn’t have specific partners, there are plenty of travel partners in the SkyMiles program.
SkyTeam Alliance Members: Aeromexico, Garuda Indonesia, Middle East Airlines, Alitalia, Saudi Airlines, Kenya Airways, Vietnam Airlines, KLM, Aerolineas Argentinas, Czech Airlines, Korean Air, China Southern, Aeroflot, Air France, Air Europa, Xiamen Airlines, China Eastern, TAROM, China Airlines
Car Rental Partners: Hertz, National, Europcar, Alamo, Enterprise
We’ve already established that there are strategies you can use to get the most out of your Gold Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express. But as a small business owner, you know the importance of facts and figures.
So, what’s the monetary value of using the card for your business expenses?
We know the annual fee and earnings rate:
|Annual Fee||Points Earned for Delta Purchases||Points Earned Everywhere Else|
|$95 (waived first year)||2x||1x|
Your annual fee for this card is waived the first year, so you won’t lose any money by using it. After that, it’s $95 per year, and we want to make sure it’s value is at least that much.
Delta SkyMiles are worth anywhere from $0.005 to $0.015 per point, depending on how you redeem them.
For this section, we will assume they will be redeemed for Delta flights at $0.012 per mile. (However, you can find redemption values that are much higher!)
Next, let’s see how many miles a small business could earn.
Small Business Spending
Here is the budget we’ll use to accrue SkyMiles. You can see that this small business has expenses of $135,800 per year.
|Shipping||$4,000||Airline Expenses related to above||$1,000|
|Cell Phone||$2,400||Hotel Expenses related to above||$1,000|
|Landline||$ –||Legal Fees||$10,000|
|Cable||$ –||Web Expenses (including dev)||$12,100|
|Gas Station||$5,200||Other Transportation||$500|
|TOTAL BUSINESS SPEND||$135,800|
Calculating the Membership Rewards Points
The small business in our example spends $1,000 per year on air travel, which will earn double miles. The rest of the expenses earn 1 mile per $1.
|1x Everything Else||$134,800||134,800|
After 1 year, the small business would earn 136,800 SkyMiles. At $0.012 per mile that means the miles are worth $1,641.60 in travel!
A card worth $1,641.60 is not bad for a small business. And chances are you could get a better value for your redemptions if you spent some time researching your flight options.
If you subtract the $95 annual fee from this value for the second year, the card is still quite valuable. Plus, we didn’t apply any sign-up bonus miles!
Of course, if you don’t want to be locked into flying Delta, there are other business credit cards that may be a better value.
For example, points earned with the Business Green Rewards Card from American Express OPEN can be used for Membership Rewards. You can transfer them to the 20 loyalty program partners (16 airlines plus 4 hotels) for as much as $0.02 per point.
Based on our calculations, the Business Green Rewards Card from American Express OPEN can be worth up to $2,740 with the right redemptions.
Another option for those who want to earn Membership Rewards rather than Delta SkyMiles is The Blue Business℠ Plus Credit Card from American Express.
Using the same expenses in the above example, we found a business would earn 185,800 points the first year. That would make the basic value of the card $1,858 or $3,716 if points were redeemed for airfare.
