The Business Platinum Card® from American Express and the Corporate Platinum Card® by American Express* serve different purposes for different customers. Eligibility is the key distinction, as company size determines which product businesses can choose. This guide explains who qualifies for each card, how these cards differ, and the potential value you can get from them.

Quick Overview: Amex Business Platinum vs. Amex Corporate Platinum

The Amex Business Platinum card, with its $895 annual fee (rates & fees), suits businesses of any size that want to maximize the return on their spending and take advantage of premium travel perks.

The Amex Corporate Platinum card, with a $550 annual fee (Source: American Express), is for large companies looking to centralize and streamline billing processes and manage personal liability for purchases.

To be considered for an Amex Corporate Platinum card, your business must produce at least $4 million in revenue annually, among other criteria. American Express doesn’t publish a minimum annual revenue or spending requirement for the Amex Business Platinum card.

The primary cardmember on an Amex Business Platinum card account is responsible for paying for the purchases charged to that account, but the business entity with an Amex Corporate Platinum card may be responsible for paying all charges on the account.

Another major difference is how points can be redeemed. Membership Rewards points earned from an Amex Business Platinum card can be transferred to any of the issuer’s airline and hotel transfer partners. Points earned from an Amex Corporate Platinum card aren’t transferable to partners, but can be redeemed for travel purchases through AmexTravel.com.

You can earn a welcome bonus offer with the Amex Business Platinum card, but there is no publicly advertised welcome offer with the Amex Corporate Platinum card.

Hot Tip: Check to see if you’re eligible for a welcome bonus offer as high as 300,000 points with the Amex Business Platinum card. Find out your offer. Terms Apply.

Can Your Business Get the Amex Corporate Platinum Card?

For your business to qualify for an Amex Corporate Platinum card, it must meet the following criteria (Source: American Express):

  • Revenue of at least $4 million each year
  • Business address other than a home address
  • 12 months or more in business
  • Not a sole proprietor

If your business meets all of these criteria, consult with an American Express representative who will assist with the application process and walk through the available options.

If you have a home-based business, are a freelancer, have a sole proprietorship, or run a small business that doesn’t meet the revenue requirements, you are ineligible for the Amex Corporate Platinum card. The Amex Business Platinum card, which has no published revenue requirement, is the best option.

Business Cards vs. Corporate Cards: The Real Differences

The Amex Business Platinum card and the Amex Corporate Platinum card are both geared toward businesses, but each is a totally different type of card.

Here’s a look at how these cards compare:

  • Debt liability: Typically, a business credit card requires the primary cardholder to be personally responsible for any charges made on the card. With a corporate card, the business entity may take full responsibility or use combined liability.
  • Eligibility: Any business, large or small, can apply for a business credit card, but corporate cards may accept only incorporated businesses. Additionally, minimum annual revenue requirements and a minimum number of employees may be required for eligibility.
  • Application process: You can apply online for a business card, but applying for a corporate card may require a consultation with a representative to work through the application process and discuss available employee card options.
  • Credit reporting: Holding a business card generally means that activity on that card is reflected in the cardholder’s credit report. Corporate card activity is reported to the business credit profile.
  • Card features: Business and corporate cards allow you to manage employee spending with tracking and spending-limit capabilities. Both types of cards also typically offer reward-earning and points redemptions.

Anyone with the appropriate credit history and a business, even a small business, can apply for the Amex Business Platinum card. The Amex Corporate Platinum card requires a business to meet the 4 criteria mentioned above.

If you’re considering applying for the Amex Business Platinum card, it’s recommended that you have good to excellent credit to qualify. When applying for the Amex Corporate Platinum card, your business credit score and history determine approval.

Both cards require that the balance be paid off in full each statement period.

Amex Business Platinum Card: In Depth

The Amex Business Platinum card is designed for business owners who travel frequently enough to take advantage of its numerous perks and benefits. It offers the best airport lounge access of any business credit card and features an earning structure that lets business owners earn Membership Rewards points on all purchases.

The Amex Business Platinum card earns 5x points on flights and prepaid hotels booked through AmexTravel.com, 2x points at U.S. electronic goods retailers, software, cloud purchases, U.S. shipping, U.S. construction materials and hardware suppliers, and on purchases of $5,000 or more (up to $2 million in purchases each calendar year), and 1x points on all other purchases.

Points can be redeemed for transfers to any of Amex’s airline or hotel transfer partners or by using the Pay With Points rebate. If you redeem points through AmexTravel.com for flights on your preselected airline, you receive a 35% rebate in points (up to 1 million points back per calendar year). Otherwise, you can redeem Membership Rewards points at a value of 1 cent each for flights via AmexTravel.com, redeem them for statement credits, shop at Amazon and certain other retailers, use them for gift cards, or redeem points for prepaid hotel reservations made through AmexTravel.com.

The Amex Business Platinum card has a wide variety of perks and benefits, including:

  • Complimentary unlimited access to over 1,550 airport lounges worldwide, including Centurion Lounges and Delta Sky Clubs when flying with Delta same-day (Source: American Express).
  • $219 CLEAR+ credit: Pay for CLEAR+ expedited airport security membership with your card and receive up to $219 in statement credits.
  • Up to $200 airline fee credit: To enroll in this benefit, log in to your online card account and select your preferred airline. Use your card to make your purchase and receive a statement credit.
  • Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credit: Pay the application or renewal fee with your card and receive reimbursement for up to $120 for Global Entry or up to $85 for TSA PreCheck for application fees.
  • Up to $600 hotel credit: Get a credit of up to $600 ($300 biannually) on bookings for properties in Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection. The Hotel Collection requires a minimum 2-night stay. Receive up to $300 from January to June and up to $300 from July to December.
  • Car rental program benefits: Receive elite-style benefits such as discounted pricing, a grace period for returning your rental car, car upgrades, and more with Avis, Hertz, and National. Enrollment is required.

Amex Corporate Platinum Card: In Depth

The Amex Corporate Platinum card, which has an annual fee of $550, is designed for large businesses that generate substantial revenue annually. Its features are designed to make it easier for companies to simplify and centralize billing processes and offer the option to shift liability from individual employees to the business.

The Amex Corporate Platinum card earns 1x points on all purchases and 5% Uber Cash on Uber rides and U.S. Uber Eats purchases (must link the card and Uber Cash accounts).

Redemption options are far more limited, with the Amex Corporate Platinum card enrolled in Corporate Membership Rewards. Notably, you cannot transfer points earned to transfer partners. Instead, you can use the Pay With Points option to redeem for some travel purchases through AmexTravel.com or Ticketmaster. You can also redeem Membership Rewards points at a value of 0.5 cents each toward statement credits.

Furthermore, you can use points to purchase Amex gift cards and purchases on Amazon and certain retailers like Best Buy. But because of the low redemption value, shopping with points is generally not recommended.

With the Amex Corporate Platinum card, the company designates administrators who are granted redemption privileges in the Corporate Membership Rewards Program. A company may also allow individual cardholders to earn and redeem Membership Rewards.

Despite fewer redemption options, the Amex Corporate Platinum card benefits include:

  • Access to over 1,550 lounges worldwide, including Amex Centurion Lounges, Priority Pass (upon enrollment), Plaza Premium Lounges, and more
  • Up to a $219 CLEAR+ statement credit every calendar year
  • Up to a $200 airline fee statement credit every calendar year (enrollment required)
  • Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application fee statement credit
  • Hilton Honors Gold and Marriott Bonvoy Gold status upon enrollment
  • Fine Hotels + Resorts program benefits

Additionally, cardmembers can access the American Express @ Work program, which allows program administrators to oversee their entire corporate card program, including monitoring employee spending, managing policies, and accessing insights and reporting.

Amex Corporate Platinum cardmembers can add Amex Corporate Green cards for their employees for $75 per card.

Which Card Should You Choose?

The Amex Corporate Platinum card is designed for large, enterprise-scale businesses that prefer centralized billing, employee spending controls, and the ability to remove personal spending liability over earning rewards.
