Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver

The Wells Fargo Autograph Journey card offers an auto rental collision damage waiver you may be eligible for if you’re involved in an accident or your rental vehicle is damaged.

Using the waiver offered by the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey card is quite simple:

  • Pay for the entire rental car bill with the card
  • Decline the insurance offered by the rental car insurance company

However, it’s worth noting that the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey card’s auto rental collision damage waiver is secondary. This means that in case of a claim, your own auto insurance will come first. This differs from cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, which offers primary auto rental insurance.

The cardholder and any additional drivers you list on the rental agreement are covered.

Coverage You Can Expect

  • The cost to repair the car or the actual cash value, whichever is less
  • Maximum coverage is $50,000
  • Reasonable towing expenses to the nearest collision repair facility
  • The loss of use of the rental car

Conditions

  • The rental agreement is for 15 consecutive days inside the U.S. and 31 consecutive days outside the U.S.
  • Coverage is available worldwide except in Israel, Jamaica, the Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland
  • Rental car coverage is secondary to your own auto insurance policy

Exclusions

  • The rental car is used in a way that goes against your rental car agreement (such as but not limited to driving recklessly or under the influence of drugs or alcohol) or against clear instructions or warnings posted in the car
  • The rental car was used as a car for hire
  • The car is rented through a car-sharing company that allows individuals to rent out their own car
  • Mechanical failures caused by wear and tear, gradual deterioration, or mechanical breakdown
  • Loss due to confiscation by authorities or hostility of any kind (including, but not limited to, war, invasion, rebellion, insurrection, or terrorist activities)
  • Exotic and antique vehicles
  • Vans are not covered, except those designed as small-group transportation vehicles (seating up to 9 people, including the driver) are covered
  • Vehicles with an open cargo bed, trucks, motorcycles, mopeds, motorbikes, limousines, and recreational vehicles
  • Vehicles that are rented with a driver
Bottom Line:

If you have a travel credit card, look into the rental car insurance policy. If you already have access to coverage, don’t waste additional money paying for insurance through the rental car agency.

Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption Insurance

In addition to an auto rental collision damage waiver, one of the most valuable benefits of a travel rewards credit card is insurance coverage when a disruption during your travels affects lodging, flights, or activities.

When you use your Wells Fargo Autograph Journey card to pay for your trip expenses, you get both trip interruption and cancellation coverage applied to your trip. Let’s talk about what you need to know.

How Long You’re Covered

  • Trip cancellation coverage begins on the date the trip was purchased and ends on the trip departure date
  • Trip interruption coverage begins on the trip departure date and ends on the trip completion date

Maximum Coverage

  • $15,000 maximum per covered traveler per trip
  • $20,000 in total claim coverage per 12 months

Covered Events

  • Accidental injury, loss of life, or illness experienced by the cardholder, immediate family, or traveling companion
  • Severe weather
  • Change of military orders
  • Terrorist events or hijackings
  • Jury duty or subpoena that cannot be postponed or waived
  • Finding that your residence has become uninhabitable
  • You have been quarantined

Lost Baggage Insurance

When traveling on a common carrier, you could be eligible for up to $3,000 in coverage if your bag is lost due to theft or misdirection.

If baggage or its contents are lost or stolen, the covered traveler should notify the airline (or other common carrier) before leaving the airport or station and keep a copy of any report provided.

Roadside Dispatch

Roadside dispatch is a great benefit if you’re in a pinch on your drive. This isn’t a free service, though, as there is a set price for the services charged to your card. To use this, simply call the 24/7 hotline number at 800-847-2869.

Services You Can Expect

  • Standard towing
  • Tire changing
  • Jump-starting
  • Lockout service
  • Fuel delivery
  • Standard winching

Any additional services and costs are the cardholder’s responsibility.

Travel Accident Insurance

Accidents happen, and having coverage in the case it does can make a situation much less stressful.

The Wells Fargo Autograph Journey card comes with an industry-leading $1 million policy in case you’re injured while traveling. You qualify for this insurance as long as you use the card for your trip expenses.

This policy covers you during your trip and under these circumstances:

  • Riding as a passenger in, entering, or exiting the car that was paid for
  • Riding as a passenger in, entering, or exiting any mode of transportation licensed to carry the public for hire (such as taxi, ride-shares (e.g., Uber or Lyft), bus, train, or airport limousine) or any courtesy transportation provided without a specific charge (e.g., hotel shuttle), while traveling to or from the airport, terminal or station for which the common carrier fare was purchased with the covered card and/or rewards program associated with your covered account:
    • Immediately preceding the departure of the scheduled common carrier on which you are a passenger; or
    • Immediately following the arrival of the scheduled common carrier on which you were a passenger;
  • While at the airport, terminal, or station at the beginning or end of your trip

Compensation for bodily loss varies by the type of body part lost, and the loss must occur within 1 year of the initial accident:

When you’re in an unfamiliar place and need medical assistance, finding the help you need can be overwhelming. The Wells Fargo Autograph Journey card comes with complimentary referral assistance for the below needs. These services also apply to your spouse, domestic partner, and dependent children under 22 years. However, the cost of goods and services provided is the cardholder’s responsibility.

To use this benefit, call 800-992-6029 (804-673-1675 outside the U.S.). Here’s what the service can provide you:

  • Emergency Message Service can record and relay emergency messages for travelers or their immediate family members.
  • Medical Referral Assistance provides medical referral, monitoring, and follow-up. The benefit administrator can give you the names of local English-speaking doctors, dentists, and hospitals or assign a doctor to consult with local medical personnel by phone.
  • Legal Referral Assistance can arrange contact with English-speaking attorneys and U.S. embassies and consulates if you’re detained by local authorities, have a car accident, or need legal assistance. In addition, the benefit administrator can coordinate bail payments.
  • Emergency Transportation Assistance can help you make all the necessary arrangements for emergency transportation home or to the nearest medical facility.
  • Emergency Ticket Replacement helps you through your carrier’s lost ticket reimbursement process and assists in delivering a replacement ticket should you lose your ticket.
  • Lost Luggage Locator Service can help you through the common carrier’s claim procedures or arrange shipment of replacement items if an airline or common carrier loses your checked luggage.
  • Emergency Translation Services provides telephone assistance in all major languages and helps find local interpreters.
  • Prescription Assistance and Valuable Document Delivery Arrangements can help you fill or replace prescriptions, subject to local laws, and can arrange pickup and delivery of your prescriptions filled for you at local pharmacies. This service can also help transport critical documents that you may have left behind.
  • Pre-Trip Assistance can provide information on your destination before you leave, such as ATM locations, currency exchange rates, weather reports, health precautions, necessary immunizations, and required passport visas.

No Foreign Transaction Fees

If you’re traveling overseas and paying with a credit card, you could be on the hook for a 3% foreign transaction fee when paying with a U.S. credit card. The Wells Fargo Autograph Journey card doesn’t charge foreign transaction fees (rates & fees), which is a typical feature for many travel credit cards.

If you spend $5,000 abroad on a family vacation, this feature could save you $150 and the hassle of converting U.S. dollars into local currency.

Filing a Claim

Insurance is one of those things you purchase or have with the hope of never having to use it. However, if you need to file a claim, you need plenty of documentation about the event and need to know how to file a claim.

The easiest way to file a claim with the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey card is to start on the Claims Administrator website here. It’s best to contact the claim administrator as soon as possible to ensure you get direction on what documentation is needed.

For example, if you’re submitting a claim regarding rental car insurance, the terms and conditions request the following:

  • A copy of the initial and final rental car agreement, accident report form or statement, repair estimate, and itemized repair bill
  • 2 photographs of the damaged rental car, if available
  • A police report, if filed
  • A copy of the demand letter that shows what you’re responsible for and the amounts that have been paid toward the claim
  • A copy of your monthly account billing statement (showing the last 4 digits of the account number) demonstrating that the entire rental transaction was made on your card
  • A statement from your insurance carrier or other reimbursement showing the costs you are responsible for and any amounts that have been paid toward the claim. If you have no applicable insurance or reimbursement, a signed statement (or email from the email address associated with the claim) confirming no other insurance or reimbursement will apply is required.
  • A copy of your primary insurance policy’s declarations page (if applicable) to confirm your deductible

How Coverage Compares

Other Credit Card Issuers

Travel protection and insurance vary greatly by the credit card issuer and can change periodically. In general, here’s what you can expect in the way of travel protections by major credit card issuers:

Chase

Chase issues fantastic travel credit cards including the Chase Sapphire Reserve® and Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card, and they also come with comprehensive travel coverage. However, Chase also has trip delay insurance, and some cards include primary rental car insurance.

American Express

American Express offers travel insurance on some of its more premium cards, including The Platinum Card® from American Express and the Delta Reserve® Credit Card from American Express.

However, its coverage is less than Wells Fargo, with American Express only covering up to $10,000 in trip interruption insurance.

Capital One

Some Capital One cards, including the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card, come with secondary auto rental collision damage waiver, roadside dispatch, accident insurance, lost and delayed baggage coverage, and emergency travel assistance. However, their coverage may not be as high as the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey card.

Final Thoughts

The Wells Fargo Autograph Journey card is a solid credit card for any traveler. It offers a valuable welcome bonus, great spending categories, valuable rewards, and comprehensive travel insurance.

However, like any insurance policy, be sure to read the terms and conditions closely to ensure that it covers what you need. If the coverage is lacking, it could be helpful to look into purchasing a separate travel insurance policy.
