As a frequent traveler, I’ve often tried to fit as many experiences as possible into each trip. As the saying goes, “so many places, so little time.” Because life is short and time is precious, the push to see it all has been real.

After years of creating bucket lists and striving to check off the next country, I’ve now reached the point of embracing slower travel. And honestly, it’s been a relief.

Slow travel can mean staying longer in a place, having a more mindful, connected experience, or being more environmentally sustainable. For me, it simply means doing less and enjoying it more. Whether you’re experiencing travel burnout or not, here are a few simple changes I’ve started making when planning trips.

1. Staying Longer in Each Location

While there’s nothing wrong with visiting a couple of cities on each trip, I’ve reduced the amount of city-hopping in my itineraries. I now prefer to visit 1 or 2 cities and explore them more fully, often using 1 of them as a base.

Queenstown New Zealand Harbor View
Basing myself in Queenstown, New Zealand, allowed me to explore the city and the surrounding area more comfortably.

I once visited Vienna and Salzburg in Austria, and Munich, Germany, in a single week (including travel days). At the time, it felt productive. Now, it just feels rushed. These days, I prefer using a single city as my base, staying in 1 hotel whenever possible, and focusing on exploring the area around me.

One way I’m accomplishing this is by utilizing hotel loyalty points to take advantage of the 5th-night-free benefit with Hilton Honors and Marriott Bonvoy. When I book 5 consecutive award nights with either program, I will receive 1 of those nights free. Plus, I receive qualifying elite night credits that count toward elite status.

AC Hotel Alicante Spain
Marriott Bonvoy has some sweet spots for booking 5th-night-free stays.

My favorite hotel program for using the 5th-night-free benefit is Marriott Bonvoy. I use my Marriott Bonvoy Bevy® American Express® Card for everyday purchases, including at U.S. supermarkets and restaurants worldwide, as it earns 4x points on up to $15,000 in purchases each year, then 2x points.

2. Booking Longer Airport Connection Times

There’s nothing worse than missing a connecting flight when it could have been avoided by booking a longer connection time. Missing an international flight is even worse.

Mexico City Airport Flight Cancelations
You never know when you’ll experience delays or cancellations.

I now book much longer connection times, so I can eliminate any worry about missing my connecting flight and enjoy time in the airport lounge. Lounge access is very important to me, and I carry several cards that help me gain entry regardless of which airline I’m flying.

Delta One Lounge JFK Restaurant
When I fly in Delta One business class, I look forward to the Delta One Lounge at JFK.

The Platinum Card® from American Express offers access to Centurion lounges, Priority Pass lounges upon enrollment, and select Lufthansa lounges, plus Delta Sky Club access when flying Delta on the same day.

3. Building in a Day With No Plans

Too many of my past trips have included non-stop movement — booking a tour each day, visiting a museum, traveling from 1 city to another — with basically no downtime.

Morning Coffee by The Sea
Sometimes it’s just nice to watch the sun rise casually.

The day with no predetermined plans may turn out to be the busiest day of the trip, but just knowing that anything (or nothing) can happen adds calmness to my itinerary. It might begin with a slow morning — coffee, breakfast, and a walk — and evolve from there.

Horse Drawn Carriage Mackinaw Island
Approaching the Grand Hotel on Mackinaw Island in Michigan.

Starting the day without a rigid plan creates space for spontaneity. The flight attendant could mention a market worth seeing, or the hotel front desk person could suggest a special event. Or you could even end up at a private party. If my agenda is open, my answer doesn’t have to include, “maybe next time.”

If the day is open, I can also reach out to ask for recommendations, which is unlikely if my schedule is full.

4. Embracing Slower Modes of Transportation

If I do travel from 1 city to another, I prefer to book a train, ferry, or boat.

Ha Long Bay, Vietnam Boat View
Staying on a boat overnight in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam, was so relaxing, and the views were amazing.

If the slower mode of transportation has sleeping accommodations, that’s even better. For example, taking the ferry between Copenhagen, Denmark, and Oslo, Norway, was relaxing, offered incredible views, and cost less than a hotel room.

I’ve also embraced train travel, like riding the Alaska Railroad from Fairbanks, Alaska, to Anchorage — an experience more memorable than the destination itself.

Alaska Railroad Gold Star Service
Relaxing and enjoying the scenery on the Alaska Railroad.

Using slower transportation allows me to enjoy my surroundings, meet other travelers, and walk around freely. For these bookings, I typically use my Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card.

Chase Ultimate Rewards

It’s one of the few cards that earn 3x points on general travel purchases (up to $150,000 in combined purchases with select business categories each account anniversary year, then 1x), such as transit, tours, entrance fees, and other travel purchases. It also comes with valuable travel insurance.

Bottom Line:

Incorporating a day with no predetermined plans allows for more leisure and spontaneity. Adding slower modes of transportation, such as trains and boats, lets me take in the view, have plenty of space to walk around, and plan with more flexibility.

5. Incorporating Wellness Into My Itinerary

Whether it’s a simple hike in nature, a foot massage, or a soak in a mineral bath, incorporating wellness into my trip has become a priority.

Budapest Thermal Baths
Budapest thermal baths are relaxing and good for the body and mind.

Wellness doesn’t have to mean booking a specialized retreat or spa. For me, it’s about adding simple self-care elements to my trip.

That might include:

  • Tai chi, yoga, sauna, steam room, or thermal pools
  • Hiking, walking, climbing steps up a mountain/hill, or getting out into nature
  • Wellness classes and walking tour
  • Manicure, pedicure, and facial services
  • Eight hours of sleep and healthy food choices
Clarion Hotel Copenhagen Airport Spa Pool
Adding an element of wellness to my itinerary can be as simple as using my hotel’s indoor pool.

Whether it’s more exercise, healthier choices, or body care and repair, I’m committed to adding an element of wellness to my future travels.

Final Thoughts

Travel burnout is a real thing, and even small changes can make a big difference. I’m not aiming for perfection with every trip, but I’ve found that staying longer in a single place, building in downtime, and slowing the pace overall makes travel far more enjoyable.

Recognizing a problem is the first step in solving it, and I think I’m well on my way to experiencing slower travel and enjoying it more.
