Apple held its annual Worldwide Developers Conference this week, during which it showed off major overhauls to its key software products.

Among the significant updates is its iOS mobile operating system, which includes some key features in the Apple Wallet app that travelers should be aware of — including the new ability to add a mobile passport.

Here’s a look at everything you need to know.

New Mobile ID Features Coming to Apple Wallet

In the latest version of Apple’s mobile operating system, iOS 26, coming this fall, improvements to the Apple Wallet app will allow iPhone users to create a digital ID using their U.S. passport and store it within the mobile wallet.

Per the REAL ID law, which went into effect earlier this year, it will be permitted as an acceptable form of government ID for domestic travel only and at supported TSA checkpoints across the country.

However, this digital ID will not be accepted for international travel. Travelers still must present a physical passport at international borders.

Apple’s also making other improvements that will be useful for travelers. Boarding passes stored within Apple Wallet are getting much more functionality, including real-time flight updates that can be shared with others so they have a better idea of when your flight is arriving.

Users can also view airport navigational maps, see recommendations for the area, easily access the Find My app to track bags and even report lost suitcases, view pertinent flight information such as upgrade and standby lists, and more.

Launch customers for the enhanced boarding pass functionality include Air Canada, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue Airways, Jetstar, Lufthansa Group carriers, Qantas, Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, and Virgin Australia.

Final Thoughts

Apple is making significant changes to its mobile wallet app in its latest version of the iOS mobile operating system. While the digital ID won’t replace your physical passport for international travel, it seems we’re inching closer toward that reality.

When iOS 26 rolls out this fall, you can use your digital ID for domestic flights at supported TSA screening checkpoints. Combined with the new functionality for mobile boarding passes, iPhone users on the go have much to look forward to when the latest update drops. We can’t wait to put these features to the test!
