When it comes to travel, the consensus has always been to plan and book early. That has always made sense — last-minute airfare is rarely cheap.

When an impromptu trip, a family emergency requiring travel, or a last-minute business trip comes up, buying a ticket mere days before departure can mean paying hundreds — if not thousands — of dollars more than someone who booked that same flight months in advance.

This is where airline miles come in. While many travelers seem to believe that award seats must be booked well in advance, last-minute award travel can offer some of the most interesting opportunities. Over the years, I have redeemed well over 3 million points and miles for travel around the world — many of them for last-minute trips when I did not have concrete plans.

The challenge is knowing which loyalty programs offer last-minute award space.

Here’s a look at some of my favorite airline loyalty programs for last-minute award travel.

Why Airlines Release Last-Minute Award Space

Before booking a last-minute award ticket, it’s important to understand why airlines release last-minute award space, as that makes the redemption process easier to figure out.

Many airlines release last-minute award space to fill seats that are unlikely to be sold for cash so close to departure. If a flight still has empty seats, an airline may make some of them available to its loyalty program members to book with miles rather than let them fly empty.

Last-minute award availability can also show up as airlines adjust inventory based on booking patterns and respond to last-minute cancellations or general changes in demand. However, last-minute award space is never guaranteed and may often come with higher mileage requirements or additional fees.

Earlier this year, I booked a Japan Airlines first class seat less than a week before departure.

In many cases, last-minute award availability can be extremely valuable, particularly in premium cabins, where a business or first class seat that normally sells for thousands of dollars might otherwise go empty.

Last-minute award travel is very different from traditional points planning. When you book travel months or up to a year in advance, you can often build an itinerary around a specific airline, premium cabin, or even routing. However, when you need to leave in the next few days or the very next day, flexibility becomes much more important.

A good program for last-minute travel should offer much more than just solid award prices. This includes broad access to partner airlines, reasonable taxes and fees, and flexible booking policies (ideally without a close-in booking fee).

Lastly, and arguably most importantly, instant or relatively quick transfers from flexible rewards currencies, like American Express Membership Rewards or Chase Ultimate Rewards, among others.

Hot Tip:

It’s important to keep an eye out for transfer bonuses to airline loyalty programs you frequently use or have a specific use case for. Often, having the necessary miles already in your frequent flyer account can be the difference between securing an award seat and losing it while you wait for a transfer to post to your account.

1. Air Canada Aeroplan

Air Canada Aeroplan is one of the most widely used airline frequent flyer programs, and for good reason. Though it has undergone massive devaluations in recent years, it is my favorite airline loyalty program.

Aeroplan has excellent partner airlines, has an award chart for most partner redemptions, allows for stopovers for just 5,000 Aeroplan points, does not levy fuel surcharges on partner redemptions, and offers numerous transfer partners.

Air Canada has many partner airlines, such as Thai Airways. I booked a Thai Airways business class seat using Aeroplan points.

Additionally, the program has excellent last-minute Star Alliance partner inventory. Unfortunately, Aeroplan uses dynamic pricing for Air Canada-operated awards, meaning prices fluctuate based on demand. However, it has a zone-based award chart for most partner redemptions, where redemption rates depend on the total mileage flown between 2 zones.

For example, here is a one-way Lufthansa business class award, bookable through Aeroplan, between Boston (BOS) and Frankfurt (FRA), Germany, less than a week before departure.

Or you can book a one-way EVA Air business class award between Los Angeles (LAX) and Taipei (TPE), Taiwan, less than 48 hours before departure. Of course, award space for these sought-after redemptions tends to change within minutes as travelers book them.

Air Canada Aeroplan is a transfer partner of nearly every major transferable points program, including American Express Membership Rewards, Bilt Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, Capital One miles, Marriott Bonvoy, and Rove Miles.

2. American AAdvantage

The American Airlines AAdvantage program is another popular program, thanks to how much value it offers members. It provides several ways to earn miles and elite status, as well as numerous ways to redeem those miles.

Though the American AAdvantage program uses dynamic pricing for its own flights, it, like Aeroplan, has an award chart for travel on most partner airlines.

American Airlines is a member of the Oneworld alliance, which means that members can redeem miles on partner airlines, including British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines, and Qatar Airways. This provides a lot of value, as you can redeem your AAdvantage miles on some of the world’s best airlines — and American Airlines tends to release premium cabin award space in the weeks leading up to departure.

For example, here is a last-minute, one-way Qantas business class award, bookable through American AAdvantage, between New York (JFK) and Auckland (AKL), New Zealand.

Alternatively, here’s a look at last-minute award space between Chicago (ORD) and Tokyo (HND), though in economy class. Still, there is excellent last-minute award space, with at least 1 award seat each day for the rest of the week.

American Airlines AAdvantage is a 1:1 transfer partner of Citi ThankYou Rewards. The program is also a Marriott Bonvoy partner, and points can be transferred to AAdvantage at a 3:1 ratio.

Hot Tip:

American AAdvantage miles are among the most valuable airline miles, particularly for redemptions on partner airlines. Check out our detailed guide on the best ways to redeem American Airlines AAdvantage miles for maximum value.

3. United MileagePlus

United Mileage Plus is another excellent program for last-minute award travel. The program has a long list of partner airlines, has numerous co-branded credit cards, offers flexible earning opportunities through flights and travel partners, and does not levy fuel surcharges.

Like with many other programs, United MileagePlus has dynamic pricing. However, as with Air Canada, you can redeem United MileagePlus miles for awards on numerous Star Alliance partner airlines.

For example, here is a last-minute, one-way SWISS business class award, bookable through United MileagePlus, between Washington, D.C. (IAD), and Zurich (ZRH), Switzerland, less than a week before departure.

United MileagePlus is a 1:1 transfer partner of Bilt Rewards and Chase Ultimate Rewards. The program is also a Marriott Bonvoy partner, and points can be transferred to MileagePlus at a 3:1 ratio. Plus, for every 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points you transfer, you get a 5,000-mile bonus.

Hot Tip:

It pays to be a United cardholder. United cardholders get access to a “special inventory” of United’s lowest-priced award seats. Check out our in-depth guide on the best cards for frequent United flyers.

4. The British Airways Club

Lastly, we also have The British Airways Club loyalty program. Like several other programs, it has seen many changes in recent years. However, it’s still excellent for last-minute redemptions.

The program is also a member of Oneworld, has numerous partner airlines, offers one of the most extensive route networks of any airline, provides a powerful Avios currency, and makes it easy to earn British Airways Club Avios, since it is a transfer partner of many credit card programs.

Although British Airways does not have a traditional award chart, it uses distance- and segment-based metrics, making it relatively easy to determine exactly how many Avios you need for a redemption. The program has slightly different pricing depending on whether the flight is operated by British Airways or one of its many partner airlines, and you also need to account for peak and off-peak pricing.

The program still offers excellent last-minute award space for redemptions. For example, there is plenty of last-minute business class award space between Chicago (ORD) and Amsterdam (AMS).

The British Airways Club program is a transfer partner of nearly every major credit card rewards program, including Amex Membership Rewards, Bilt Rewards, Capital One miles, Chase Ultimate Rewards, and Wells Fargo Rewards. Marriott Bonvoy is also a partner.

All points or miles transfer to Avios at a 1:1 transfer ratio, except for Marriott Bonvoy points, which transfer at a 3:1 ratio. If you transfer 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points, you get an additional 5,000 Avios.

Hot Tip:

Keep an eye out for transfer bonuses to different Avios programs. You can transfer British Airways Club Avios between other programs that use Avios at a 1:1 rate, including Iberia Club, Aer Lingus AerClub, Qatar Airways Privilege Club, and Finnair Plus.

Tools That Make Last-Minute Award Travel Easier

Generally speaking, the most difficult part about award redemptions is not earning the miles but finding available award seats, because airlines tightly control award inventory. Award space can be extremely competitive, especially for highly sought-after premium cabin seats.

With award travel becoming increasingly popular, finding award availability has become much more challenging. However, award search tools such as Seats.aero have made it much easier.

Award search tools are extremely valuable for last-minute travel because they can quickly show award space without you needing to manually check dozens of programs and dates.

As mentioned above, airlines may also release additional unexpected inventory close to departure, and award search tools can quickly find these opportunities. Best of all, many search tools also allow for award alerts, which can notify you of award space within seconds of it becoming available.

Bottom Line:

When it comes to looking for award space, award search tools can make the entire process much quicker and simpler. Speed matters a lot, especially when it comes to last-minute award redemptions.

Final Thoughts

Last-minute award travel can offer some of the most interesting opportunities, if you know what airline loyalty programs to look at. Some programs, like Air Canada Aeroplan, American AAdvantage, United MileagePlus, and The British Airways Club, are great for last-minute award redemptions.

Award search tools have also helped make the award searching significantly easier. Consider transferring flexible rewards to these programs if you are looking to make last-minute award redemptions.
