By now, you’re probably well aware that Spirit Airlines — the popular American ultra-low-cost carrier — took its final flight late last week. This left many Spirit elite flyers without their preferred airline for upcoming trips. Now, JetBlue is trying to lure them in with a status match promotion.

The New York-based airline, which tried to purchase Spirit Airlines in 2022, has just updated its Match to Mosaic status match to include former Free Spirit elites. Depending on their former elite tier, these members can match up to Mosaic 2 elite status, which includes benefits like EvenMore seat selection at booking and pet fee waivers.

Here’s a closer look at Match to Mosaic and why former Free Spirit elites may want to apply.

JetBlue Adds Free Spirit Elite to Mosaic Status Match

JetBlue’s Match to Mosaic status match isn’t new. It’s a longstanding status match promotion that lets travelers from select U.S. and European airline loyalty programs match for JetBlue TrueBlue’s Mosaic 1 or 2 elite status tiers. Until today, this list has not included Spirit Airlines’ elite members.

With Spirit Airlines now defunct, JetBlue is trying to lure frequent Spirit flyers. It’s added 11 new routes from Fort Lauderdale (FLL) — formerly a Spirit Airlines stronghold — including flights to Baltimore (BWI), Cali, Colombia (CLO), Chicago (ORD), and others.

As mentioned, the Match to Mosaic promotion has been updated to include former Free Spirit Silver and Gold elite members. Silver members are matched to entry-level Mosaic 1 status, while Free Spirit Gold members receive a match to Mosaic 2.

To apply for the status match, head to the Match to Mosaic landing page and click the “Apply Now” button. You’ll then be asked for proof of your former Spirit elite status and, if matching to Mosaic 2, a copy of your boarding pass or confirmation email for your most recent flight. You must be a JetBlue TrueBlue member before applying.

Once your status match is approved, you’ll receive complimentary elite status for 3 months. The clock starts ticking when your new Mosaic status is reflected in your TrueBlue account, not when you submit your application.

Hot Tip:

There are dozens of status matches out there. Read our full guides to airline and hotel status matches for more information.

You can keep your matched status or upgrade to Mosaic 3 by earning the following number of Tiles during the complimentary status period:

  • Keep Mosaic 1: 10 Tiles
  • Keep Mosaic 2: 25 Tiles
  • Earn Mosaic 3: 40 Tiles

TrueBlue members can earn Tiles by flying with JetBlue, booking JetBlue Vacations packages, and spending on any JetBlue co-branded credit card. You can use any combination of these to keep your Mosaic status after the match ends, but note that JetBlue Vacation packages must take place during the match to qualify.

Should Former Spirit Elites Match to JetBlue Mosaic Status?

If you’re a frequent traveler, it never hurts to have more elite status. Mosaic includes money-saving benefits like pet fee waivers, EvenMore Space seat selection, bonus points on paid tickets, and free checked bags. So if you’re a former Spirit elite with upcoming travel on JetBlue, match before your flight to get access to these perks.

But timing is everything. You can only participate in the Match to Mosaic program once every 24 months. Likewise, you should ensure you can meet the requirements to maintain your Mosaic status before you apply. Otherwise, you could be left without benefits when you need them later down the road.

Final Thoughts

After launching 11 new routes from Fort Lauderdale (FLL) that were once served by the defunct Spirit Airlines, JetBlue is now offering a status match to Free Spirit elites. This ensures that Spirit elites can continue to enjoy perks like free bags and preferred seating when flying on JetBlue.

It’s great to see JetBlue taking steps to care for these travelers, especially as it replaces Spirit on popular routes. That said, it’s worth noting that JetBlue is facing its own financial troubles, so Spirit travelers should proceed with caution before putting all their travel eggs in 1 basket.

We may see other airlines launch their own status-match promotions for Free Spirit elites in the coming weeks to drum up loyalty. Stay tuned to Upgraded Points — we’ll let you know when and if more promotions are announced.
