My 5 Favorite Redemptions That Cost 10K Points or Less

Many people think you need a lot of points or miles to get a good redemption. That may be the case for long-haul business class and first class awards on some of the world’s best airlines, but many airlines offer awards for 10,000 points or fewer.

If you find these awards when cash prices are high, you can squeeze a lot of value out of your points.

Here’s a look at some of my favorite airline loyalty programs and award redemptions that cost 10,000 points or less.

1. Short-Haul American Airlines AAdvantage Awards

The American Airlines AAdvantage program offers several ways to earn miles and elite status, as well as numerous ways to redeem those miles.

Unfortunately, American AAdvantage uses dynamic pricing for its own flights, meaning prices fluctuate based on demand. But the program has an award chart for travel on most partner airlines. Though you can find awards for fewer than 10,000 miles, it is generally easier on partner airlines.

American Airlines is a member of the Oneworld alliance, which means that members can redeem miles on partner airlines, including British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines, and Qatar Airways. 

For example, here is a one-way award between Kansas City (MCI) and Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) for 9,000 AAdvantage miles, plus $6 in taxes and fees.

Alternatively, you could fly between Tokyo (HND) and Osaka (KIX) on Japan Airlines for just 7,500 AAdvantage miles. Cash fares between the 2 major Japanese cities can be quite high, so redeeming miles offers excellent value.

American Airlines AAdvantage is a 1:1 transfer partner of Citi ThankYou Rewards. The program is also a Marriott Bonvoy partner, and points can be transferred to AAdvantage at a 3:1 ratio.

2. Short-Haul Alaska Atmos Redemptions

Alaska Airlines Atmos Rewards provides flexible earning opportunities, allows for free stopovers (including on one-way awards), and has excellent nonalliance partners.

Alaska Airlines is a member of Oneworld, and short-haul award flights booked through Alaska Atmos start as low as 4,500 points each way. This is a great way to book domestic flights on American Airlines under 700 miles.

For example, here is a one-way award on American Airlines between Washington, D.C. (DCA) and Toronto (YYZ) for just 4,500 Atmos Rewards points. You could fly round-trip for less than 10,000 points — a steal, considering cash fares can be upward of $400 during peak travel periods.

Alternatively, you can fly between Honolulu (HNL) and Maui (OGG) for just 4,500 Atmos Rewards points, plus $26 in taxes and fees.

Alaska Atmos Rewards is a 1:1 transfer partner of Bilt Rewards. It is also a transfer partner of Marriott Bonvoy, which transfers at a 3:1 ratio to Alaska Atmos Rewards. For every 60,000 Bonvoy points you transfer, you get a 5,000-point bonus.

3. Short-Haul Air Canada Aeroplan Redemptions

Despite a massive devaluation earlier this year, Air Canada Aeroplan still remains one of my favorite airline loyalty programs. The program has a long list of partner airlines and award charts for partner redemptions, allows for stopovers for just 5,000 points, and does not pass on fuel surcharges for partner redemptions.

Aeroplan uses dynamic pricing for its own flights and has a zone-based award chart for certain partner airlines, where redemption rates depend on the total mileage flown between 2 zones.

You can find terrific deals on Air Canada flights with its dynamic pricing system, though prices can vary widely at times. For example, here is a one-way award between Montreal (YUL) and Newark (EWR) for just 8,400 Aeroplan points, plus CA$126 (about $91) in taxes and fees.

Alternatively, you can use the program’s award chart for certain partner awards. For example, you can fly between Bahrain (BAH) and Doha (DOH) on Gulf Air for just 7,500 Aeroplan points and $CA89 (about $64) in taxes and fees.

Air Canada Aeroplan is a transfer partner of nearly every major transferable points program, including American Express Membership Rewards, Bilt Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, Capital One miles, Marriott Bonvoy, and Rove Miles.

All programs transfer at a 1:1 rate to Aeroplan, aside from Marriott Bonvoy. Marriott Bonvoy points transfer at a 3:1 ratio to Aeroplan — and for every 60,000 Bonvoy points you transfer, you get a 5,000-point bonus.

4. Short-Haul British Airways Club Redemptions

The British Airways Club loyalty program has also undergone major changes over the years, but it still offers excellent potential for award travelers. The program has numerous partner airlines, an extensive route network, and an incredibly useful Avios currency.

It’s also easy to earn British Airways Club Avios, as the program is a transfer partner of many credit card programs. Though British Airways does not have a traditional award chart, it has a distance- and segment-based system, which makes it relatively easy to know exactly how many Avios are needed for a redemption.

The program has slightly different pricing depending on whether the flight is operated by British Airways or one of its many partner airlines. You also need to account for peak and off-peak pricing. Still, there is a lot of value in being a bit flexible. For example, here is a one-way off-peak award between London (LHR) and Amsterdam (AMS) for 10,000 Avios, plus $5 in taxes and fees.

The British Airways Club program is a transfer partner of nearly every major credit card rewards program, including Amex Membership Rewards, Bilt Rewards, Capital One miles, Chase Ultimate Rewards, and Wells Fargo Rewards — Marriott Bonvoy is also a partner.

All points or miles transfer to Avios at a 1:1 transfer ratio, except for Marriott Bonvoy points, which transfer at a 3:1 ratio. If you transfer 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points, you’ll get an additional 5,000 Avios.

5. Virgin Atlantic to London for Just 6K Points

Virgin Atlantic Flying Club is an incredibly valuable program for awards between the U.S. and Japan, and it also offers some of the cheapest award flights between the U.S. and Europe. 

Award pricing varies by date and demand, but Flying Club members can book saver economy award tickets for as low as 6,000 points one-way, plus taxes and fees. For example, here is a one-way Virgin Atlantic economy award between Boston (BOS) and London (LHR) for just 6,000 Flying Club points, plus $110 in taxes and fees.

Though the taxes and fees are somewhat higher than those of most programs, the mileage requirement more than makes up for it. Being able to fly to Europe and back to the U.S. for just 12,000 Flying Club points, plus a few hundred dollars in taxes and fees, is a fantastic redemption.

Virgin Atlantic Flying Club is a transfer partner of nearly every major transferable rewards currency, including American Express Membership Rewards, Bilt Rewards, Capital One miles (via Virgin Red), Chase Ultimate Rewards, Citi ThankYou Rewards, Marriott Bonvoy, Rove Miles, and Wells Fargo Rewards.

Final Thoughts

Many airline loyalty programs allow travelers to book award tickets for less than 10,000 points or miles.

I use nearly all of my points and miles for long-haul business and first class flights, but there have been instances when redeeming a few thousand points has saved me a lot of cash. And a 10,000-point balance can be more attainable than what’s required for a long-haul premium-cabin award.
