To its credit, Savannah Airport said it had been “working hard” to get Spirit to add flights at the airport.

“We believe Spirit is a great fit for our market, and the cities they are adding will be a strong addition for our community and region,” said Greg Kelly, executive director of the Savannah Airport Commission.

However, Spirit will join a crowded market at SAV, particularly for flights to the New York area. Delta Air Lines offers nonstop flights to SAV from New York-Laguardia (LGA) and New York-Kennedy (JFK). JetBlue also operates the route from JFK, and United Airlines serves Savannah from Newark.

But there are fewer flights for the other routes, allowing Spirit to scoop the competition with low fares.

Allegiant Air offers flights from Savannah to Fort Lauderdale, while Southwest and Delta serve Nashville and Detroit, respectively.

Bottom Line:

It’s been a busy few weeks for Spirit. The airline recently emerged from bankruptcy proceedings. It has since announced a flurry of new routes and then parted ways with its CEO, Ted Christie, who led the airline through bankruptcy.

How To Book

Flights for the new routes are already available on Spirit.com. Flights are available from $59 each way. There are numerous blackout dates, depending on the route.

Once you’ve settled on flights and dates, booking your travel with a credit card that rewards you for travel purchases is essential. Some of the best options include The Platinum Card® from American ExpressChase Sapphire Reserve®, and Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card. You can also open one of 2 Spirit co-branded credit cards.

Final Thoughts

Spirit is expanding operations in Savannah with new flights to Detroit, Fort Lauderdale, Nashville, and Newark. This is excellent news for travelers, who should soon enjoy lower prices on routes that can be pretty pricey on legacy carriers.
