It’s no secret that transferable rewards reign supreme in the world of points and miles. Having access to flexible currencies such as Chase Ultimate Rewards, Amex Membership Rewards points, Citi ThankYou Points, and Capital One miles, among others, means greater award availability and more flexibility in planning.

But there’s an argument for adding co-branded cards to your wallet, almost as building blocks. Co-branded cards, whether they’re connected to an airline or hotel loyalty program, give you perks and benefits tied to those brands that generic travel cards simply cannot offer.

Here’s when you should consider adding co-branded cards to your wallet, and which ones we recommend based on your travel habits.

Why I Recommend Starting With Transferable Points

Transferable points and miles are those tied to the “umbrella” programs, if you will: Chase, American Express, Citi, Wells Fargo, Capital One, and Bilt. These banks and programs issue cards that earn their own currencies, such as Chase Ultimate Rewards and Capital One miles.

An easy example of this is the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, which earns Ultimate Rewards points on any purchases.

Why We Like This Card

The Chase Sapphire Preferred card bonus categories include travel, dining, online grocery purchases (excluding Walmart, Target, and wholesale clubs), gas, EV charging, vacation home rentals with top brands, and streaming services.

It offers flexible point redemption options, no foreign transaction fees, and strong travel insurance coverage, including primary car rental insurance. If you travel a few times a year and spend on dining, the card is likely to be a good choice, but it’s hard to justify if you don’t dine out or travel often.

Pros & Cons
Pros
  • 5x points on all travel booked via Chase Travel
  • 3x points on dining purchases, online grocery purchases (excluding Walmart, Target, and wholesale clubs), gas, EV charging, vacation home rentals with top brands (such as Airbnb and Vrbo), and select streaming services
  • 2x points on all other travel worldwide
Cons
  • $95 annual fee
  • Subject to Chase’s 5/24 application restrictions
Card Highlights
  • Earn 75,000 bonus points after you spend $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening.
  • Enjoy benefits such as 5x on travel purchased through Chase Travel℠, 3x on dining, 3x on vacation homes at top brands, 3x on gas & EV charging, 3x on top streaming services and online groceries (excluding Walmart, Target, and wholesale clubs), 2x on all other travel purchases, 1x on all other purchases.

Chase Ultimate Rewards

The Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card, on the other hand, is still issued by Chase, but purchases made with that card earn Southwest Rapid Rewards points.

When you have a pool of Ultimate Rewards points, you can transfer those points to any of Chase’s airline and hotel partners, which include United, Aeroplan, Marriott, and Southwest itself.

The same goes for Membership Rewards, Citi ThankYou Points, and the points issued by most other banks. Each program has its own set of transfer partners, and while some overlap, there are also unique partnerships. But when you earn Southwest Rapid Rewards via purchases on your Southwest Plus card, for example, those points can mainly be used to book Southwest flights.

If you’re someone who values options and flexibility when it comes to award bookings, transferable currencies are the clear winner. But as you build your wallet, adding co-branded cards can become part of your rewards strategy, especially as you consider loyalty program perks and benefits.

When a Co-Branded Card Makes Sense

There are certainly times when a co-branded card adds value. As a practical example, my parents live about 20 minutes from Nashville (BNA), their home airport. Because Nashville is a Southwest hub, our family has been flying Southwest for my entire life.

Nashvillians should consider applying for a Southwest co-branded card. Image Credit: Chris Hassan

Southwest flights are the most convenient at the Nashville airport, where the airline dominates. The same goes for Delta flights in Atlanta (ATL), United in Chicago (ORD), and so on.

When you live near one of these “hub” airports, holding a co-branded card with that airport’s most popular airline can be practical. Because my parents primarily fly Southwest, they have the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card, which includes the first checked bag free for the main cardmember and up to 8 additional passengers on their reservation.

Now, would I recommend that as the only card they carry? No. But they already have the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card, and adding a $229 annual fee is small potatoes compared to how much they’ll save on bags, seat selections, and so on.

How To Choose Co-Branded Cards

Start by selecting the airline you fly with the most or the hotel where you spend the most nights in a year, and research the best co-branded card offered by that program. Based on what’s already in your wallet, you should also consider earning categories. Are you lacking a card that earns well on gas purchases? Groceries? Streaming? That could help in your decision-making process. Here’s a good starting place.

Best Airline Co-Branded Cards

Depending on which airline you fly with most frequently, I’d consider looking at the following:

When To Skip a Co-Branded Card

If you’re just getting started with points and miles, I would prioritize travel cards with transferable currencies. This will simply give you more options. Start with one of our favorite cards, like the Chase Sapphire Preferred card, the Capital One Venture X card, the Citi Strata Premier® Card, or the American Express® Gold Card.

These cards give you access to airline and hotel partners, both domestic and international, and the freedom to move rewards across multiple programs on multiple trips. And again, if you don’t live near an airline’s hub, such as Delta in Atlanta or Southwest in Nashville, and only fly a few times each year, having a co-branded card makes less sense.

Hot Tip:

If your home airport is dominated by one airline but you fly often to locations served by another carrier from that hub, it’s worth considering the smaller airline’s co-branded credit cards. For example, if you live in Atlanta but fly often to Dallas or Miami, you could consider an American Airlines card since AA has relatively frequent flights from ATL to those destinations.

Why I Don’t Recommend Store Co-Branded Cards

Store co-branded cards are credit cards offered by a particular brand. While these cards reward frequent shoppers, you’re simply not getting the best value, especially if we’re talking travel.

These rewards will likely be funneled back into whatever store you’re earning with, and the redemption options will be slim to none. While cash-back rates can be decent, for most points-and-miles people, the opportunity cost of using a store co-branded card doesn’t outweigh that of earning transferable rewards.

Final Thoughts

If you live near an airline’s hub airport or find yourself spending most hotel nights with the same chain, adding a co-branded card from that program can be beneficial. You’ll likely score perks such as elite status, free night awards, checked bags, and so on.

That said, I’d still prioritize a card that earns transferable rewards as your main character and let the co-branded card play a supporting role.
