For most travelers, carrying a single hotel credit card is usually enough. Just pick a hotel chain you like and get its co-branded credit card to access additional benefits from the hotel’s loyalty program.

I currently have 9 hotel credit cards across several popular hotel chains because they significantly enhance my rewards strategy and offer good value. Here’s a look at the different hotel cards I have and the reasons why I keep so many.

My Hotel Credit Card Lineup

This year, I’ve spent more than 100 nights at hotels worldwide, often with Hilton HonorsMarriott Bonvoy, IHG One Rewards, and World of Hyatt. Given how much I travel, it makes sense to carry multiple hotel credit cards.

These hotel loyalty programs offer numerous perks, including earning and redeeming points for free nights. Between credit card transfer partners, numerous co-branded credit cards, and welcome offers, I’ve earned a large number of points, most of them from these hotel credit cards.

Here’s what I keep in my wallet:

Hot Tip:

1. Free Night Certificates

One of the most valuable perks of many hotel credit cards is the yearly free night certificate. In many cases, the value of these awards surpasses the card’s annual fee, meaning they pay for themselves.

Each of the 4 hotel chains I stay with most often has at least 1 co-branded hotel card worth keeping for the free night certificate.

For example, 2 of my most premium co-branded Marriott Bonvoy credit cards, the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant card and the Ritz-Carlton card, each offer a free night award on each card anniversary. The free night award gives cardholders a reward night at a participating Marriott Bonvoy hotel (up to 85,000 points).

I’ve been able to redeem the free night certificate on these more premium cards at luxury properties around the world, where a standard room costs several hundred dollars, or even more during peak travel periods. This includes properties such as the Waldorf Astoria Chicago, The St. Regis Chicago, The Ritz-Carlton, Tokyo, and the Conrad Tokyo.

2. Elite Status Benefits

In addition to free night certificates, many hotel cards offer elite status within the hotel program. These cards can offer a shortcut to elite status, providing benefits that would otherwise require a significant number of hotel nights or substantial spending (or both) to earn.

It may not matter if you only stay a few nights per year, but hotel elite status can be one of the most valuable reasons to stay with a hotel chain. Elite status can include room upgrades, bonus earnings, lounge access, complimentary breakfast, early check-in, late checkout, and complimentary Wi-Fi.

For example, the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant card offers complimentary Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite status, and the Hilton Aspire card provides complimentary Hilton Honors Diamond Elite status.

Marriott Bonvoy

Hotel elite status has made many of my ordinary hotel stays more luxurious. This year, I have been upgraded to nicer rooms (and sometimes suites), had free breakfast nearly every day, been given early check-ins (as early as 7 a.m.), and been given 4 p.m. late checkouts.

Although some perks aren’t guaranteed, elite status recognition has made my hotel stays much better overall.

Bottom Line:

Many hotel cards provide some level of elite status, elite night credits, or opportunities to earn higher status through spending. For frequent travelers, these benefits can stack well with rewards earned from hotel stays.

3. Diversification Matters

Another important aspect to consider is diversification. Focusing on a single hotel loyalty program limits your hotel rewards options.

Diversifying hotel programs offers more redemption options. Image Credit: Keri Stooksbury

For example, Hilton may offer the only option in a remote destination, and Hyatt may have the best property for a different trip. Marriott could offer a hotel in the part of the city where I want to stay, and IHG may offer an airport hotel when I need one.

4. Elite Night Credits Toward Higher Status

Certain hotel credit cards also provide elite night credits for holding the card or present spending opportunities to attain a higher status. Elite night credits are qualifying hotel nights that loyalty programs use to measure progress toward elite status. Typically, elite night credits account for paid and award stays.

BISHA, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Toronto bed side view
Some cards provide elite night credits, which can help with attaining higher elite status. Image Credit: Ehsan Haque

For example, Marriott Bonvoy has co-branded credit cards with Chase and American Express. Each card provides different benefits, including travel perks, elite status, and points-earning rates. Most of the co-branded Marriott cards also provide elite night credits.

The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant card provides 25 elite night credits. The Marriott Business card provides 15 elite night credits. Under Marriott’s rules, I can combine the elite night credits on these 2 cards. Though the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant card already gives complimentary Platinum Elite status, the 40 elite night credits between the 2 cards put me over halfway to Titanium Elite status, which normally requires 75 elite nights.

Many other cards, such as the World of Hyatt card, also offer the ability to earn elite night credits by spending on the card. For example, World of Hyatt cardholders can earn 2 elite night credits for every $5,000 they spend on the card.

World of Hyatt

Spending on cards is an excellent way to earn points and elite night credits, which can help attain higher elite status or milestones within certain programs. And this spending bridges the gap if you fall short of the number of nights for the next status tier.

Hot Tip:

You can earn up to 40 elite night credits toward Marriott elite status with Marriott cards.

5. Card-Specific Credits Make Them Easier To Keep

Free night certificates or complimentary elite status may not be enough to justify a card’s annual fee, especially for premium cards with higher annual fees, such as the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant card or the Hilton Aspire card. These cards typically offer statement credits that help offset the annual fees, making them easier to justify.

Premium cards like the Hilton Aspire card offer statement credits that help offset the annual fee. Image Credit: Upgraded Points LLC

For example, the Hilton Aspire card offers up to $400 in Hilton Resort credits (up to $200 semiannually), up to $200 on eligible flight purchases made directly with an airline or through AmexTravel.com (up to $50 in statement credits each quarter), and up to a $219 fee credit for a CLEAR+ membership.

Likewise, the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant card provides cardholders with up to $300 in statement credits per calendar year for eligible restaurant purchases worldwide (upon enrollment). This credit offsets nearly half of the card’s $650 annual fee (rates & fees).

Final Thoughts

Most of the hotel cards I carry offer incredible perks and benefits, such as a free night certificate, complimentary elite status, and statement credits that help justify their annual fees. Hotel cards have become a core part of my rewards strategy, helping me earn hundreds of thousands of hotel points each year.
