3. It’s an Affordable Destination for Americans

While Hungary has been a member of the European Union since 2004, it has not yet adopted the euro as its currency. The country’s official currency is the Hungarian forint. Despite its EU membership, Hungary has held on to its currency and perhaps its historical affordability.

Even with inflation, the city is one of the most affordable in Europe, so your travel dollars will go far here. Budapest is also very card-friendly, meaning you won’t need much cash when visiting unless you venture out to the countryside, where cash is more prevalent.

4. It Has a Rich History

Budapest suffered greatly during the wars of the 20th century. Your visit to the city should certainly include learning about its devastating losses and historical struggles.

Budapest’s history stretches much further than the last century — back to before Roman times. More recently, the city lived through Nazi and communist control. The scars and beauty of Budapest’s history are found throughout the city. Here are some sights that can help you learn more:

• The Hospital in the Rock is not to be missed, whether or not you’re a history buff. The hospital was built under Buda Castle in preparation for World War II, to treat soldiers and civilians during the surge. The nuclear bunker is fully preserved, fascinating, and provides a somber look at the perils of war.
• Heroes’ Square is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Budapest’s most important squares. The impressive Millennium Monument features statues of the Seven Chieftains of the Magyars (tribal leaders of the original Hungarians). The hop-on, hop-off bus stops there.
• The House of Terror Museum is dedicated to Hungarian freedom and commemorates the murder, torture, and captivity of victims here during the wars in Hungary.
• After the fall of communism, instead of destroying the statues, Hungarians moved them outside the city, where they stand today. You can visit Memento Park and view the works, but more importantly, learn about the history. The site also hosts a museum and has narrated guided tours.

• The Fisherman’s Bastion (pictured above) was built between 1845 and 1902 to honor the fishermen who helped defend the area in medieval times when it was part of Buda Castle. Its 7 walls represent the Magyar tribes who settled in Hungary in the ninth century.
• Explore Castle Hill, where you’ll find Buda Castle, which houses the Hungarian National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum. You’ll also find Matthias Church, one of the oldest in Budapest, known for its incredibly ornate roof.

5. The Romance of the Danube

One of Europe’s most captivating waterways, the Danube, runs right through the middle of Budapest, separating the Buda side from the Pest side.

Since the Danube is more than 1,700 miles long, you can take lengthy river cruises on its waters and pass through several countries. While in Budapest, a short cruise can give you a taste of the river’s intrigue.

A 1-hour cruise down the Danube can cost as little as $20, and it is well worth the time and money. If you want more, there are dinner cruises and sunset cocktail cruises.

6. The Thermal Baths

Thermal baths have been a staple throughout Budapest’s history. They’ve been around since Roman times, but when the Ottomans controlled the city, they preferred to utilize them for their healing properties, even building hospitals over the natural springs.

During Turkish rule, they built grand hammams (Turkish baths), to which the Hungarians had limited access. Fortunately, these grand structures survived beyond Turkish rule, and they became part and parcel of the city’s culture to the present day, when visiting is open to everybody.

Thermal baths have become social hubs, party venues, places of relaxation, and regular wellness rituals. Adding a thermal bath to your Budapest visit is highly recommended.
