What Is an Authorized User?

Before we get into the benefits of adding authorized users to the Capital One Venture X Business card, let’s explain what the term means.

An authorized user is a cardholder added to an existing credit card account. On a business account, authorized users can be business partners, employees, or other members of your business. On a personal account, authorized users may be relatives, such as spouses or children.

All authorized users get their own credit card with their name on it. However — and this is important — all charges to the card are the cardholder’s responsibility. Therefore, it’s essential that any authorized user added to your business account is trustworthy and that your business is willing to pay for their charges.

Core Benefits of Adding Authorized Users

1. Pay Less Than a Separate Card

The Capital One Venture X Business card has a hefty $395 annual fee (rates & fees). If you’re a small business owner, the cost of getting each employee their own card could easily cost hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars. However, adding an authorized user will incur no charge, which is a great way to cut down on costs (rates & fees)!

2. Users Build Credit History

An authorized user will benefit when the primary cardholder is responsible and pays off their credit card in full each month. Adding an employee as an authorized user can be an easy way to increase their average length of credit and credit-to-debt ratio.

3. Set Spending Limits

As the primary cardholder, you can set custom spending limits for employee cards and see transactions as soon as they post.

Earning Benefits of Adding an Authorized User

4. Meet Welcome Bonus Offer Requirements Quicker

The Capital One Venture X Business card has a sizable welcome bonus offer, but you may need help meeting the spending requirement. When you add an authorized user, spending from the user will count toward the spending requirement, which is usually within the first few months of opening the account.

5. Maximize Bonus Categories

The Capital One Venture X Business card comes with some excellent bonus categories, with 10x miles on hotels and rental cars purchased through Capital One Travel and 5x miles on flights and vacation rentals purchased through Capital One Travel.

Bottom Line:

Not only will the primary cardholder earn bonus miles on qualified travel, but any authorized user will also. If authorized users are heavy travelers, it’ll be easy to rack up a ton of Capital One miles quickly for travel.

6. Earn Lots of Miles With Unlimited 2x Earning

Beyond the bonus categories, the Capital One Venture X Business card comes with unlimited 2x miles on all other purchases, which is one of the most generous earning rates for general spending. Even if your authorized users don’t travel much, you’ll quickly earn miles if they’re spending on everyday business purchases.

Redeeming Rewards

7. Redeem Miles

Just like the primary cardholder, Capital One Venture X Business card authorized users can redeem Capital One miles for travel. Capital One has many transfer partners — including all 3 major airline alliances: Star Alliance, Oneworld, and SkyTeam. Capital One is also a transfer partner to some niche programs, like ALL – Accor Live Limitless and Virgin Red, which are programs with fantastic benefits when traveling abroad.

You aren’t limited to just redeeming miles through transfer partners. You can redeem Capital One miles for cash-back through a statement credit or a check. However, we don’t recommend doing this — your miles are far more valuable when transferred to travel partners!

8. Transfer Miles to Another Capital One Card

You can move Capital One miles from your credit card to another card of your choice without needing to be related or share the same mailing address. However, the card must be within the Spark Miles family of cards or the Venture family of cards. To get started, simply call the number on the back of your Capital One Venture X Business card to process the transfers.

Travel Protections

9. Auto Rental Insurance

The Capital One Venture X Business card comes with auto rental car insurance. Authorized users can take advantage of this benefit by simply using their card to rent an eligible vehicle to receive coverage for collision or theft of most rental cars.

To receive coverage, the rental vehicle must be rented primarily for business purposes and paid for entirely with the card or miles.

10. Lost Luggage Reimbursement

Thanks to the Capital One Venture X Business card, you may be eligible for reimbursement due to luggage theft.

11. Travel and Emergency Assistance Services

Travel and emergency assistance services are available to both the primary cardholder and authorized users 24/7 to help connect them with local emergency and assistance resources. While referrals are complimentary, the cost of any services or goods provided is the cardholder’s responsibility and is not covered.

12. Cell Phone Protection

Protect your cell phone whenever you pay your bill with your Capital One Venture X Business card. You’ll get reimbursed up to $600 if it’s stolen or damaged. Certain terms, conditions, and exclusions apply.

Travel Benefits

13. No Foreign Transaction Fees

Primary cardholders — as well as authorized users — will not pay a foreign transaction fee when making purchases outside of the U.S. (rates & fees).

14. Capital One Travel — Price Drop Protection, Price Match, and Price Watch Alerts

If you book your flight when recommended by Capital One Travel and the price drops within 10 days, you’ll receive up to $50 in travel credit to cover the difference.

Capital One will also price-match flight, hotel, and rental car reservations and give you a travel credit for the difference (within 24 hours after booking).

If you set up a price watch alert, Capital One Travel can help you get the best price on thousands of flights, hotels, and rental cars.

What Benefits Do Authorized Users Not Receive?

Now that you know about the benefits authorized users receive from the Capital One Venture X Business card, let’s look at the benefits they won’t receive.

Up to $300 Capital One Travel Credit

One of the Capital One Venture X Business card’s best benefits is the annual $300 credit for bookings through Capital One Travel. Unfortunately, this benefit is only available to primary cardholders, not authorized users.

TSA PreCheck or Global Entry Statement Credit

One of the many statement credits available with the Capital One Venture X Business card is the Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application fee credit. The primary cardholder can use this benefit — or use it for an authorized user’s application fee — though an authorized user won’t get their own credit.

Hot Tip:

You can get a value of up to $120 every 4 years for Global Entry or every 4.5 years for TSA PreCheck.

Anniversary Bonus

Primary cardholders receive 10,000 bonus miles every year starting on the first card anniversary, a benefit Upgraded Points values at $180. However, only the primary cardholder — and not any authorized users — is eligible for this cardmember bonus.

Capital One Lounges and Partner Lounge Network Access

Capital One Venture X Business cardholders have access to an extensive network of airport lounges. These include unlimited complimentary access for the cardholder and 2 guests per visit to Capital One Lounges and 1,400+ airport lounges globally in Capital One’s Partner Lounge Network.

Unfortunately, this is not a benefit authorized users can take advantage of unless they are an accompanying guest of the primary cardholder. Capital One Venture X Business card authorized users and account managers do not have complimentary access to the Partner Lounge Network on their own and have to pay the standard rate to get into any lounges.

Reasons Not To Add an Authorized User

We’ve gone over the reasons why you’d want to add an authorized user to your Capital One Venture X Business card. However, there are some reasons why adding an authorized user wouldn’t make the most sense. Let’s take a look at a few.

The Balance Must Be Paid Every Month

The Capital One Venture X Business card is a pay-in-full card. That means your balance must be paid off in full every month. If you (or your authorized user) don’t pay off the balance in full, you will be charged a late fee of 2.99% on your outstanding statement balance, and your account will be considered past due until it’s paid in full.

If you’re concerned that you can’t cover employee charges, you’re better off skipping an authorized user.

Your Authorized User Wants Lounge Access

As mentioned above, an authorized user won’t get lounge access on their own — they need to be traveling with the primary cardholder. This can be a big deal if the authorized user travels often and doesn’t have another credit card that offers lounge access.

How To Add an Authorized User

To add an authorized user, log into your account at capitalone.com and follow the directions on the Manage Users page. To complete this step, you’ll need some identifying details, such as the person’s birthdate and Social Security number.

You’ll follow similar directions if you want to remove an authorized user by selecting the user you want to delete on the Manage Users page. Note that you can’t remove someone who jointly opened an account with you.

Final Thoughts

The Capital One Venture X Business card offers many benefits for authorized users. However, it doesn’t offer the same set of travel benefits — namely, lounge access — included for authorized users of the consumer Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card.

Either way, adding an authorized user is a huge responsibility for both the primary cardholder and the authorized user. When done correctly, adding an authorized user can build the authorized user’s credit, consolidate expenses, and allow the authorized user to earn and redeem Capital One miles in your account for travel!

For Capital One products listed on this page, some of the benefits may be provided by Visa® or Mastercard® and may vary by product. See the respective Guide to Benefits for details, as terms and exclusions apply.
