The Ideal Cardholder
Sign-Up Bonus, Earning Categories and Points
The current sign-up bonus for the card is listed above in the card summary table. Simply spend the required amount in the allotted time to earn usually enough for a one way flight.
A seat in the main cabin to any of the 48 contiguous U.S. states and Canada is only 20,000 miles (AAnytime Level 1 award). Using a MileSAAver award, a business class seat to the same destinations would cost only 25,000 miles.
You’ll earn 2 miles for every dollar you spend on American Airlines flights and services and select business categories, which includes telecommunications services, car rentals and purchases at gas stations!
Earn 1 mile per dollar on all other purchases. The annual fee is $95 per year, waived in year 1.
Boarding and Baggage Benefits
Nobody likes paying extra to check their bags. With the CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard®, check your first bag free when traveling on domestic flights.
Up to 4 people can share this benefit if they are traveling with you under the same reservation.
Plus, no more waiting to board the plane! Get complimentary Group 1 boarding on American Airlines domestic flights.
In addition, there are no foreign transaction fees on card purchases, saving you money when you fly internationally.
More Card Benefits and Discounts
The card really is jam-packed with benefits and discounts.
First, the $95 annual fee is waived for the first year. That gives you 12 months to enjoy everything that comes with the card without having to pay for any of it!
Next, save 25% on in-flight purchases like food, beverages, and headsets on flights operated by American Airlines. This discount can add up quickly when you fly often for business.
Reduced mileage awards provide another fantastic discount. Redeem round-trip flights with reduced mileage awards for 7,500 fewer miles and save your points for other awards.
Finally, earn an American Airlines Companion Certificate after spending $30,000 or more.
Big Business Benefits
As a business owner, you’ll enjoy the features that come with the card.
Rack up the points faster than ever by requesting employee cards at no additional cost. That means you’ll get the miles for everyone’s purchases. You can set the credit line and cash advance limits on each employee card.
You’ll also get 24/7 access to a dedicated small business customer service team (1-866-458-4216) and a personal business assistant to help with travel, hotel, and dining arrangements (1-800-301-5584).
Another business benefit is online account summaries, which make it easier to track your quarterly and annual expenses.
Drawbacks of the Card and Alternatives
The biggest drawback to the card is that its value is directly tied to American Airlines. If you and your employees don’t fly American Airlines on a regular basis, the card won’t be useful.
If you want to earn points for your business expenses but have the freedom to redeem them with a wide variety of travel and business partners, the Chase Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card is an option.
That card has the same $95 annual fee, although it is not waived the first year.
With the Chase Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card, earn 3x points per $1 on the first $150,000 spent in combined purchases on travel, shipping purchases, Internet, cable and phone services, advertising purchases made with social media sites and search engines each account anniversary year.
Points earned with the Chase Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card can be used with travel partners like United MileagePlus, British Airways Executive Club, and Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards, as well as many online retailers.
The CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard® is a good card for businesses that fly American Airlines frequently.
It has a wide array of benefits and discounts that allow cardmembers to earn miles quickly so they can be redeemed for flights with American Airlines, car rentals, and hotel stays.

How To Use the CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard®: The Upgraded Way
Best Way To Maximize Points
The fastest way to accumulate miles with the CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard® is by charging everything to the card in the 2x bonus categories.
These include telecommunications expenses, car rentals, and gas station purchases.
The following list includes even more ways to earn tons of American Airlines miles with the card.
Tip #1: Purchase all American Airlines flights and services with the card to earn 2x miles. Remember, you also get a 25% discount for most in-flight purchases using the card.
Tip #2: Earn elite status with the AAdvantage loyalty program to bank points rapidly with a bonus: Gold (40%), Platinum (60%) and Executive Platinum (120%).
You will need to accumulate elite-qualifying miles (EQMs) to earn status: Gold (25,000), Platinum (50,000), and Executive Platinum (100,000).
You also have another option for achieving Gold or Platinum status (though not Executive Platinum). Participate in an elite status challenge to earn status for fewer EQMs. The only caveat is that you need to pay to do so.
The current 2016 program requirements are:
- Gold ($120 fee): Earn 7,000 EQMs in 90 days
- Platinum ($200 fee): Earn 12,500 EQMs in 90 days
So, for $120 you can earn Gold status with only 7,000 EQMs, compared to the 25,000 EQMs normally required!
The benefits of Gold status definitely outweigh the cost. In addition to getting a 40% bonus on miles, you’ll also get free upgrades, priority check-in, complimentary same-day standby, and a discounted Admirals Club membership.
There are even more benefits for Platinum status!
Tip #3: Enroll your card with car rental agencies to multiply points quickly. First, earn 2x points because car rentals are in the 2x bonus mile category.
Plus, earn up to 500 points per rental depending on the agency. Avis and Budget are preferred partners, which means you will earn the most miles with each rental. Platinum and Gold status AAdvantage members earn 1,000 points per rental!
Tip #4: Earn points at restaurants by registering your card with the AAdvantage Miles Dining Program.
Get 1 AAdvantage mile per $2 spent. Agree to receive emails from the program and get 3 miles per $1 spent. Make 12 qualified dining transactions in a calendar year and get 5 miles per $1 spent!
That’s a lot of miles for dining you would probably be doing anyway!
Plus, you aren’t limited to enrolling American Airline AAdvantage credit cards to the program. As long as your credit cards are not enrolled in another miles-earning dining program, you can add up to 5 of any of your credit cards to the program.
Tip #5: Stay at hotels to earn AAdvantage miles.The following table shows participating American Airline AAdvantage partners and the miles you can earn by staying with them:

Best Way To Redeem Points
When you are ready to redeem your American Airlines AAdvantage miles, try to get the highest value possible.
Here are some options for redeeming points earned on the CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard®.
Tip #1: International flights provide the best value for your American Airlines miles. The table below shows some of the many redemptions available for main cabin and business class seats for domestic and international travel.
See the American Airline AAdvantage site for a complete list.
|Destination||Main Cabin Seat||Business Seat|
|48 contiguous U.S. states||12,500||25,000|
|Canada & Alaska||15,000||30,000|
|Central America / Mexico / Caribbean||17,500||27,500|
Because you can’t transfer your points directly to the partners, you’ll have to search for award flights and then call AAdvantage (1-800-433-7300) to book the flights. You may be able to get the $25 booking fee waived by asking the representative.
Tip #2: Save 7,500 miles when booking round-trip domestic travel using the MileSAAver rate. You must call to book your ticket, and the discount is good on specified round-trip routes every other month.
Tip #3: Redeem miles to upgrade to a higher cabin on American Airlines and American Eagle flights. Upgrades start at 5,000 miles for full-fare economy upgrades.
Tip #4: Take advantage of the 500-mile upgrade program from AAdvantage and upgrade from published fares in the Main Cabin on American Airlines marketed flights.
Purchase 8 upgrades for 40,000 miles or buy 500-mile upgrades for $40 on aa.com, at the airport, by phone (800-882-8880), or at American Airlines ticketing locations.
Executive Platinum members can upgrade free of charge on all flights. Platinum and Gold members receive complimentary upgrades on flights 500 miles or less.
Platinum and Gold members also earn four 500-mile upgrades for every 12,500 EQMs earned during the membership year. These can be used for upgrades on flights of more than 500 miles.
Tip #5: Redeem points or combine points and cash for hotel stays and car rentals.You need at least 1,000 miles for each reservation, and there are no blackout dates.
While you can’t change car rentals and hotel stays once they are purchased, you can buy them for family members and friends by entering their information during the redemption process.
Go to the American Airline AAdvantage site to search for available hotels, car rentals, and vacations.

So far in this review of the CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard®, we’ve looked at the features of the card as well as the best ways to earn and redeem miles.
Hopefully, this information has been helpful to you.
Next, we’ll explore the overall value of the card based on the numbers.
A Quick Recap of the Card
Let’s start by reviewing the cost and earning potential of the card:
|Annual Fee||Points Earned on Flights and Select Business Expenses||Points Earned Everywhere Else|
|$0 first year, then $95/yr||2x||1x|
Just like most loyalty programs, your miles earned on the card don’t count toward elite status. However, it’s still smart to work toward elite status so you can maximize your miles.
Our Small Business Example: A Consulting Firm
This table lists the typical business expenses for a consulting firm. We’ll assume the business has a few employees and performs consulting work around the region.
|Shipping||$4,000||American Airline flights and services related to above||$1,000|
|Cell Phone||$2,400||Hotel Expenses related to above||$1,000|
|Landline||$ –||Legal Fees||$10,000|
|Cable||$ –||Web Expenses (Including Dev)||$12,100|
|Gas Station||$5,200||Car Rentals||$500|
|TOTAL BUSINESS SPEND||$135,800|
Next, we’ll assign the above spending into earning categories.
|Bonus Category||Total Dollars Spend||Total Points Earned|
Based on these expenses, you could earn 142,500 points, assuming you put all of your expenses on the card!
During our research on AAdvantage miles, we determined the value of each mile to be between $0.01 and $0.02.
Based on the example of the consulting business above, that makes the total monetary value of the miles $1,425- $2,850. Subtract the $95 annual fee after the first year, and that’s a pretty good value for a business owner!
After all, with the sample spending, you would also qualify for an American Airlines Companion Certificate and get perks like first checked bag free, Group 1 Boarding, and much more!
Of course, as always, do your own calculations for your level of spending–and always spend wisely.
