The W New York – Union Square has long been one of the brand’s most iconic properties, but in recent years, the hotel has been showing its age.

That’s all changed, though, as the hotel has officially reopened following a $100 million renovation that touched every element of the hotel.

Here’s what you can expect at this completely reimagined New York hotel.

W New York – Union Square Relaunches After Major Refresh

The 256-room W New York – Union Square has received a “room-to-rooftop reinvention” and is ready to show off its new look to guests.

The hotel called on the Rockwell Group, which was responsible for its original design in 2001, to lead the renovation project.

Housed in a beaux-arts building dating back to 1911, the renovation has highlighted the structure’s architectural details, evident as soon as you enter the lobby. The so-called “Living Room” accentuates the space’s tall ceilings and intricate details and takes cues from the iconic Grand Central Terminal to create a space rooted in the past but with a thoroughly modern twist.

Living Room Café serves coffee from Devoción during the day and morphs into a sophisticated place for cocktails, beer, or wine as night rolls around. True to W form, guests can expect everything from live music and DJ sets to art exhibits and round-table talks to take place in the Living Room.

Guest rooms feature “botanical carpeting, curved lacquered walls, ombre wallpaper, drapery, and lush burnt orange velvet headboards,” meant to reflect the shift in seasons right outside in Union Square. Each features a W bed with a pillow-top mattress, modern controls for lighting and temperature, smart TVs, Marshall Bluetooth-equipped speakers, bathroom toiletries from Davines, cozy robes, and more.

Slated to open in the fall, the hotel’s signature dining experience, Seahorse, will be a “modern seafood brasserie” from the team behind many iconic New York restaurants such as Lure Fishbar, Bowery Meat Company, Bar Mercer, and Cha Cha Tang. Helmed by Chef John Villa, the restaurant will serve elevated versions of classic seafood and raw bar dishes.

Elsewhere, there’s a brand-new indoor/outdoor rooftop space to enjoy. Set beneath the hotel’s marquee, it will be an ideal place to savor delicious cocktails while taking in a unique view of New York’s inimitable skyline.

Finally, the hotel’s former basement bar has been transformed into a large fitness center, known as FIT at W Hotels. It boasts “the brand’s first in-hotel Peloton studio,” with 5 bikes. There’s also a recovery area that features hydro-massage chairs.

The W New York – Union Square revamp is the latest example in a string of openings and reopenings embodying the philosophy of the W brand’s evolution. Others include the reenvisioned W Hollywood and W Austin, and the newly opened W Punta Cana, W Prague, W São Paulo, and more.

Marriott says that by 2028, “80% of the global portfolio will be fully transformed,” including significant properties like W Hoboken and W Las Vegas.

Final Thoughts

The W New York – Union Square has relaunched with an entirely new, grown-up look. It retains the “loudness” in design that made W so famous originally, though it comes with a refined and modern twist that will appeal to travelers who desire more than just a place to lay their heads at night.

We’re excited to check out the renovated property for ourselves, because it truly looks great.
