The Sapphire Reserve for Business℠ is one of the best business credit cards, but it also has one of the highest annual fees. It’s easy to see why many might not give it a second look.

However, the annual fee alone isn’t the full picture. Instead of focusing solely on how much the card costs, consider how much value it offers you and whether that value exceeds the annual fee.

For many, 3 specific benefits — the welcome offer bonus, the annual travel credit, and the annual hotel credit — can offset the $795 annual fee. That can make everything else the card offers, from airport lounge access and hotel elite status, just icing on the cake.

Here’s a look at how the numbers break down.

1. The Large Welcome Offer

The Chase Sapphire Reserve Business card is currently offering:

  • Earn 200,000 bonus points after you spend $30,000 on purchases in your first 6 months and access more than $7,000 in total business and travel value in your first year.

Considering the steep minimum spending requirement, the card is a better fit for businesses with large expenses, especially those whose expenses fall within the card’s bonus categories, such as advertising. It may not be worth it for new businesses or side hustles.

At a minimum, 200,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points are worth $2,000 when redeemed for cash-back, which is more than 2.5x the annual fee.

However, with Points Boost, you can receive up to 2 cents per point for premium airline tickets or hotels with the Chase Sapphire Reserve Business card when booking through Chase Travel, making 200,000 Ultimate Rewards points worth $4,000, or more than 5x more than the annual fee.

The welcome offer is worth several years of the annual fee. That said, since this is a one-time benefit for the first year you hold the card, it won’t provide ongoing value.

2. The $300 Annual Travel Credit

Each year, the Chase Sapphire Reserve Business card provides up to $300 in statement credits for travel purchases. This is arguably one of the easiest, most flexible credits it offers.

The credit automatically applies to purchases coded as travel and covers a wide range of eligible options, including flights, hotels, car rentals, rideshares, parking, tolls, and cruises. There are no hoops to jump through, no preregistration, and no need to book through Chase Travel specifically.

Some business credit cards offer a similar but less flexible credit that can only be used for incidentals with a specific airline. Those credits may also be limited to travel booked on a travel platform that doesn’t offer the best pricing. With the Chase Sapphire Reserve Business card, virtually any travel purchase you make will be credited back to you, up to $300 per year.

Assuming you travel at least once per year, it’s easy to value this $300 credit at face value — and effectively brings the annual fee down from $795 to $495.

3. The $500 Annual Hotel Credit

Another relatively easy credit to use if you travel often is the up to $500 annual credit for stays with The Edit by Chase Travel, delivered as 2 separate $250 credits.

Each $250 credit requires a prepaid booking of at least 2 nights. You must book through The Edit specifically, not any hotel listed on Chase Travel, which limits your eligible properties.

That said, stays booked through The Edit come with added perks on top of the statement credit: a $100 property credit (typically for dining or spa services), daily breakfast for 2, room upgrades (when available), early check-in, and late checkout (when available).

In addition to the savings from your statement credits, you can also receive meaningful benefits. Assuming you book a couple of hotel stays each year through The Edit by Chase Travel, you should easily be able to take advantage of the full value of these annual credits, further offsetting the annual fee.

How the Math Justifies the Card

Here’s what the numbers look like when you isolate these 3 benefits against the $795 annual fee.

The welcome offer easily makes the card worth it for all cardholders in the first year of card membership.

After that, just 2 recurring credits alone — the $300 travel credit and $500 The Edit credit — add up to $800, which offsets the $795 annual fee before factoring in additional benefits and rewards.

Offsetting the annual fee doesn’t require maximizing every benefit, fixating on redemption options, or keeping track of multiple statement credits. It just requires 2 things many business travelers do already: booking travel and hotel stays.

Bonus Value From Other Card Benefits

The remaining card benefits add more value, including:

If you spend $120,000 on the card in a calendar year, you’ll also receive IHG One Rewards Diamond Elite status, Southwest Airlines A-List status, a $500 Southwest Airlines credit when booked through Chase Travel, and a $500 The Shops at Chase credit (an online shopping experience designed exclusively for cardmembers).

You may not value all of these perks at their exact potential dollar value, but you’re still receiving upwards of $1,200 in added credits, valuable travel protections, and perks like airport lounge access, elite status, and Global Entry.

Who Should Consider the Sapphire Reserve Business Card?

The Chase Sapphire Reserve Business card makes the most sense for people who travel for work with some regularity. It’s also a great option for small business owners who already spend meaningfully on flights, hotels, and advertising. It’s an especially good fit if you can comfortably meet the minimum spending requirement to earn the large welcome offer.

On the other hand, if your business rarely requires travel, you don’t spend much on advertising, or meeting the minimum spend requirement isn’t realistic, the math changes. In which case, other Chase business cards with lower fees, such as the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card, the Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card, or the Ink Business Cash® Credit Card, might be a better fit.

Hot Tip:

Final Thoughts

Cards with large annual fees can be easy to dismiss, but running the numbers on how much value a card would offer you, after accounting for the fee, is a savvier way to build your credit card strategy.

You’re not just incurring another business expense with the Chase Sapphire Reserve Business card — you’re gaining more than $2,000 in annual credits, a lucrative welcome offer, and useful travel perks like airport lounge access. For many, that is worth far more than the annual fee.
