Rosewood Hotels & Resorts is a legendary luxury hotel brand. One of the most opulent hospitality brands in the world, it has become the favorite of Silicon Valley millionaires and pretty much any traveler with fancy taste.

The brand has a very interesting history — it was founded in Dallas in 1979 by the daughter of H.L. Hunt, an oil tycoon. Caroline Rose Hunt sold Rosewood Hotels & Resorts in 2011 for $799 million to New World Hospitality, which is known today as Rosewood Hotel Group.

The company is now a subsidiary of Chow Tai Fook Enterprises, which you may know as a Hong Kong-based conglomerate famous for its lavish jewelry stores sprinkled throughout Hong Kong and China.

The first property built was the Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek in Dallas, which was designed to create a residential, homey feel in a luxury hotel with lots of custom touches.

Today, Rosewood Hotels & Resorts consists of 30 properties, and it has embarked on an ambitious mission to double its portfolio of ultra-luxury hotels in the next several years.

Although Rosewood doesn’t have a massive portfolio of properties, each hotel is incredible and iconic in its own right. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the best Rosewood properties in the world. Before we do that, however, let’s discuss a bit about Rosewood’s background and how to optimally book stays at one of these luxury hotels.

What Is Rosewood?

Rosewood Hotels & Resorts is a small collection of some of the most celebrated hotels in the entire world. These one-of-a-kind properties reflect local culture, acclaimed service quality, and a legendary aura.

Its chief philosophy is A Sense of Place, which collectively describes each Rosewood location’s history, culture, and geography. Every property taps into the rich, local culture while housing and servicing its guests to unlock the holistic, renowned experience that is Rosewood.

Most Rosewood properties are best classified as ultra-luxurious, with many boasting a phenomenal average Tripadvisor review rating of 4.5 stars or higher (out of a maximum of 5 stars).

You’ll find Rosewood’s 30 properties in 19 countries around the world, with locations ranging from cities such as Washington, D.C. and London to resort locations such as Riviera Maya, Mexico to Phuket, Thailand.

Let’s talk about how to get the most out of a Rosewood stay.

How To Maximize Rosewood Stays With Credit Cards

To most people, Rosewood charges an arm and a leg for hotel stays. And whether you’re staying there as a splurge or you’re a frequent Rosewood guest, you probably wouldn’t say no to free breakfast, room upgrades, and more. You probably would also consider using points for free stays, too!

But how do you access these benefits or deals?

Rosewood isn’t a part of any mainstream points programs, so you can’t use Rosewood-branded points for award nights. But not all hope is lost! Let’s talk about the main ways you can use points for Rosewood stays.

How To Use Points for Rosewood Stays

Rosewood doesn’t have a points system in the same way that hotel companies like Hilton, Hyatt, IHG, or Marriott do.

So you can’t earn any Rosewood points for your hotel stays, nor can you redeem any Rosewood points for free stays there. What you can do, however, is redeem credit card points for your stays at Rosewood.

And there are quite a few options you can pull off.

Redeeming Chase Ultimate Rewards Points

Chase’s proprietary loyalty program is called Ultimate Rewards. It’s one of the most well-known types of points out there, and there are lots of great reasons why.

Chase Ultimate Rewards points are incredibly easy to earn and can be redeemed for amazing flights or hotel stays. Also, Chase offers the ability to book travel completely online through the Chase travel portal. This is how you’ll want to book stays at Rosewood Hotels & Resorts. In fact, if you do it this way, you can redeem rewards for up to 1.5 cents per point, which is potentially a whopping 50% bonus.

So, how do you book Rosewood stays at a 1.5 cents per point value? Simple: if you have the Chase Sapphire Reserve® and you book your Rosewood stay via the Chase travel portal, you can get a bonus of 50% on your redeemed points.

And you can easily move points from other Chase Ultimate Rewards cards to your Chase Sapphire Reserve card. If you book your Rosewood stays this way, you can get a $1,500 hotel stay for just 100,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points — a 50,000-point discount!

What if you don’t have a Chase Sapphire Reserve card? You can still get a value of 1.25 cents per point for travel booked through the Chase travel portal if you have the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card.

And lastly, you can book travel via the Chase travel portal at a 1 cent per point value if you hold the Chase Freedom Flex℠, Chase Freedom Unlimited®, Ink Business Cash® Credit Card, or Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card.

Redeeming Amex Membership Rewards Points

American Express’s points system is called Membership Rewards and it’s extremely easy to earn lots of points with cards such as The Platinum Card® from American Express. Furthermore, there are countless phenomenal ways to redeem Amex points for top-notch value.

Normally, Amex Membership Rewards points can be used towards hotel stays via AmexTravel.com, but you’ll notice that most stays will yield a value of 0.7 cents per point. You can improve the value by booking an Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts stay at a value of 1 cent per point (more details below).

Booking via Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts is not as stellar as Chase’s maximum of 1.5 cents per point, but it’s still an option if you only have Amex points.

In general, we would recommend using your Amex points for higher-value redemptions, but if you have more Amex points than you know what to do with, then it might make sense to save on your Rosewood stays.

Redeeming Capital One Miles

Capital One Miles offers a rewards system for its Venture and Spark line-up of credit cards, including the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card and the Capital One Spark Miles for Business card. And if you happen to have Capital One miles, you can redeem them for 1 cent per point in value when you book via Capital One Travel.

Redeeming Citi ThankYou Points

Citi’s points system is called ThankYou Rewards. You can easily earn Citi ThankYou Points with cards such as the Citi Premier® Card. It’s easy to redeem ThankYou Rewards for splendid value, but you can also use them for hotel stays at Rosewood properties.

In the Citi ThankYou travel portal, just like with Chase and Amex, you can book flights, hotels, car rentals, cruises, and more.

In this situation, you can use your Citi ThankYou Points at a flat value of 1 cent per point. This redemption value is fairly standard, but the difference is you will accrue points faster, thanks to some fantastic Citi rewards credit cards.

Book With a Rosewood Elite Partner

Rosewood has an elite status-like recognition program called Rosewood Elite. Rosewood Elite is an invitation-only program that equips the top luxury travel agencies with the ability to get extra perks and amenities for their clients.

Here are the benefits you get when booking through a Rosewood Elite agent:

  • Daily breakfast for up to 2 guests per bedroom
  • Complimentary, space-available 1-category room upgrade upon arrival
  • A note from the property’s managing director
  • A welcome amenity
  • An enhanced property-specific amenity, such as a $100 credit per stay

Not all rates qualify, but any published rate and featured Elite Exclusive Offers do.

The property-specific amenity will vary depending on the location, and the only way to find out what the amenity is is to contact a Rosewood Elite agent (we recommend reaching out to Leigh from our team).

Hot Tip: Experience Rosewood Hotels with VIP perks and treatment! UP’s very own Leigh Rowan knows the best Rosewood properties and can make your next booking ELITE. Enjoy complimentary daily breakfast, room upgrades, monetary credits, and more — all for the same price you see online. Reach out to leighrowan@upgradedpoints.com for upgrades on your next Rosewood stay!

Book via Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts or Virtuoso

Perhaps you don’t know any travel agencies that are part of the Rosewood Elite program.

There are a few other booking options that are available to you — namely, Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts and Virtuoso.

Book via Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts

We’ll discuss Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts first because it’s a top perk offered by some of the best Amex credit cards.

Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts consists of the world’s top luxury hotels that have partnered with American Express to offer perks and benefits for every stay.

To access Fine Hotels & Resorts, you must hold a card within the Platinum or Centurion family. These include The Business Platinum Card® from American Express, the Amex Platinum card, and the Centurion® Card from American Express.

Once you hold any of these cards, you unlock the following benefits for each stay booked through Fine Hotels & Resorts:

  • Daily breakfast for 2
  • A space-available room upgrade upon arrival
  • Guaranteed 4 p.m. late checkout
  • 12 p.m. early check-in, subject to availability
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi
  • A property amenity valued at a minimum of $100, such as a food and beverage credit or a spa credit

As you can see, the Fine Hotels & Resorts benefits are more plentiful than the Rosewood Elite benefits.

If you look at Rosewood Elite’s benefits, you’ll notice the Rosewood Elite perks are focused on recognition and the Fine Hotels & Resorts perks are focused on amenities.

The drawback of Fine Hotels & Resorts compared to Rosewood Elite is that you might pay a higher price for your hotel rates — Rosewood Elite stays are bookable even at the cheapest published rate; Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts typically don’t offer the absolute cheapest rate, partially because you get to enjoy all those benefits!

Hot Tip: Get $200 back in statement credits each year on prepaid Fine Hotels & Resorts bookings with AmexTravel.com when you pay with the Amex Platinum card.

Book via Virtuoso

The other booking option is through a company called Virtuoso. Virtuoso is a travel alliance that offers its hand-picked travel agencies the ability to offer elite-like perks.

The difference between Virtuoso and Rosewood Elite is that Virtuoso bookings are available on many different types of luxury hotels, not just Rosewood properties. Other examples include Four Seasons, Mandarin Oriental, and even Aman.

In general, Virtuoso’s benefits fall just short of Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts:

  • Daily breakfast for 2
  • A space-available room upgrade upon arrival
  • Early check-in (subject to availability)
  • Late checkout (subject to availability)
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi
  • A Virtuoso amenity, such as a $100 food and beverage credit or a $100 property credit

As you can tell, the benefits list is extremely similar. The only major difference is that Virtuoso’s late checkout is subject to availability, whereas Fine Hotels & Resorts offers guaranteed 4 p.m late checkout.

A modest benefit with Virtuoso is that you might encounter slightly cheaper rates than Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts because Virtuoso guarantees that its rates are at most the same cost as the best flexible rate when booking direct.

Bottom Line: Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts likely offers the best amenities of all the booking methods. Rosewood Elite bookings are more focused on recognition, and they will probably be the cheapest. Virtuoso offers the fewest benefits, but you don’t need a particular credit card or have to know any Rosewood Elite agencies to book Virtuoso stays. There are many Virtuoso agents, including Leigh Rowan (who is a part of our team). You can contact Leigh for a quick reply at leighrowan@upgradedpoints.com.

Using the Citi Prestige Card Fourth-Night Free Benefit

If you’re not insistent on enjoying all of the benefits from Rosewood Elite, Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts, or Virtuoso and you’d like to just save as much money as possible on the actual room rate, then look no further than Citi’s fourth-night free benefit.

If you can use the Citi fourth-night free benefit, you can receive the fourth night free on a booking of 4 consecutive nights or more. You can realize savings of up to 25%!

This benefit is available exclusively to cardholders of the Citi Prestige® Card (no longer open to new applicants). If you are a holder of this ultra-premium credit card, you can receive the fourth night free benefit (limited to twice per calendar year) by booking your hotel stay on the ThankYou Rewards website or by calling 800-THANK-YOU.

We love this benefit, particularly for lavish stays like the ones you might book at Rosewood. The savings can be immense!

For example, if you are looking at booking a Rosewood stay that costs $750 per night excluding taxes and fees for 4 nights, you could pay as low as $2,250 for this reservation instead of $3,000! You’d save $750 by using this benefit!

Book Directly for Exclusive Offers and Packages

Rosewood offers a variety of attractive offers and packages that will probably tempt you to splurge on a Rosewood stay.

While many of these offers are great for enhancing your stays, such as suite and villa packages, there may be ways to make your stay even cheaper, such as a complimentary night offer.

Other packages include family travel offers, which include kids’ activities, experiences, and family suite accommodations.

Hot Tip: If you’re booking direct and are trying to figure out which credit card to use, be sure to reference our guide to the best hotel credit cards out there!

Rosewood Hotels & Resorts isn’t a huge brand. There are around 30 properties globally, each offering the unfussy opulence that Rosewood is so well-known for.

Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco is an Italian wine country paradise. This ultra-exclusive seasonal hotel is our runner-up choice for several reasons. First of all, the elegant, nearly 5,000-acre property is set upon a fairy-tale backdrop surrounded by the hills of Val d’Orcia in the Tuscan city of Siena.

The serene estate is just 8 miles from the town of Montalcino. This all-suite property boasts just 42 magnificent suites and 11 villas infused with breathtaking beauty. The entry-level “junior” suites are 549 square feet large, but the villas start at 2,809 square feet in size!

Our next property is Las Ventanas al Paraíso, a Rosewood Resort. One of the most picturesque properties in the Rosewood portfolio, this dramatic hotel is also one of its most aspirational properties. Rosewood Mayakoba

Rosewood Mayakoba is a refreshing take on luxury hotels in Riviera Maya. Many properties in Riviera Maya are all-inclusive, which can be great for value-focused travelers. However, all-inclusive resorts may feel like a somewhat muted, cookie-cutter experience if you seek a traditional hotel stay.

The all-suites resort offers 129 suites and private residences in total. The standard-tier suites are called Lagoon Suites, and they are a minimum of 1,804 square feet in size (788 square feet interior and 1,016 square feet exterior).

Room rates average $1,500 per night for studio Lagoon Suites, and these rooms can be found for as low as $1,000 per night or as expensive as $4,000+ per night during the high season!

The French Colonial-style rooms in the exotic retreat are at least 517 square feet in size. You can pick between 1 king bed and 2 twin beds in each room — most of which are either riverside, next to a waterfall, or tucked away at the top of a hilltop.

Also, you’ll find a patio, an exclusive welcome amenity, a designer bed with opulent Frette linens, a fully-stocked minibar, a Nespresso coffee machine, free Wi-Fi, and twice-daily housekeeping with evening turndown service.

Rosewood Luang Prabang offers a bistro serving authentic Laotian food and an elegant cocktail bar with river views, as well as a spa and a natural pool with a waterfall.

This elite resort charges around $800 per night, but the price can fluctuate anywhere from $600 to $1,050 per night!

Hot Tip: There are very few nonstop flights to Southeast Asia from the U.S., so you’ll most likely have to take a connecting flight to get to Laos. Let us guide you to the best ways to fly to Southeast Asia with points and miles!
