Few cards rival the storied history of the Platinum Card® from American Express, which debuted in 1984 as an exclusive, invitation-only product. Over the past 4 decades, the card has undergone multiple evolutions as its popularity has exploded, especially in recent years.

The Amex Platinum card is also the most expensive premium rewards card on the market. With its $895 annual fee (rates & fees) and extensive benefits, it consistently sets the standard for the rest of the market.

If you’re curious about how the cost of carrying this iconic card has evolved, we’ll dive deep into the history of its annual fee changes since its original launch.

Amex Platinum Card’s Annual Fee Changes

The Amex Platinum card underwent a major refresh in September 2025 with flashy new perks. Unsurprisingly, these updates also made it more expensive than ever. Let’s take a closer look at the annual fee changes:

Cardmember programs like the Platinum Concierge, Fine Hotels + Resorts, and even transfer partners date back to the late 1980s to early 1990s. The card eventually became available to the public at the turn of the millennium, with an annual fee of $300 that has practically tripled since then.

The modern-day selling point of the Amex Platinum card is airport lounge access with complimentary food and drinks, though that’s a relatively recent development in the card’s long history. The first Centurion Lounge opened at Las Vegas International Airport (LAS) in 2013, and the network has since expanded rapidly to nearly 3 dozen locations.

From that perspective, it makes sense why the annual fee has climbed to where we are now at $895.

Of course, lounge access isn’t the only aspect of the Amex Platinum card that has evolved. Over the years, American Express has introduced a wide range of statement credits and partner benefits beyond travel, spanning dining, entertainment, and lifestyle (some benefits require enrollment).

Hot Tip:

According to the U.S. Inflation Calculator, a $250 annual fee in 1984 would be roughly $783 in 2026. That represents an increase of more than 200% due to inflation. In that context, today’s $895 annual fee on the Amex Platinum card isn’t quite as surprising.

Amex Platinum Card Authorized User Fee Changes

Sharing benefits (especially airport lounge access) among your family or loved ones is a big reason to add additional Platinum cards to your Amex Platinum card, which currently costs $195 per additional card (rates & fees). As you can imagine, this fee has also increased:

$195 per additional Platinum card

Early 2010s to 2023

$175 total for up to 3 additional Platinum cards

Until 2023, cardmembers could add up to 3 additional Platinum cards for a flat $175 fee, whether you added 1 authorized user or all 3. Because of this structure, adding the full 3 was easily the most cost-effective option, effectively bringing the annual cost down to about $60 per card.

This setup was popular because authorized users received their own lounge access without having to hold the primary card. They also qualified for their own Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credit, though most other statement credits were limited to 1 per card account — and that’s still the case today.

It was likely only a matter of time before American Express increased the authorized user fee. Today, each additional Platinum card costs $195, and with guest access now restricted unless the primary cardholder spends at least $75,000 annually on the account, extending lounge access through additional Platinum cardholders is more expensive than ever.

Is the Amex Platinum Card Worth It?

Now that we’re in the modern era, it begs the question: Is the Amex Platinum card and its $895 annual fee really worth it?

While paying close to $1,000 for a card can be a hard sell for lots of people, the card is clearly positioned for frequent travelers with its premium benefits. Cardmembers receive up to $200 in airline fee credits upon enrollment, up to $600 in prepaid hotel statement credits each calendar year (up to $300 semiannually) through AmexTravel.com, and elite-style perks at Fine Hotels + Resorts and The Hotel Collection (minimum 2-night stay) properties, including guaranteed late checkout, breakfast for 2, and on-property credits.

Perhaps the biggest draw for new applicants is the ability to score a massive welcome bonus offer:
