American Airlines launched daily service from New York (JFK) to Doha (DOH) in June 2022. Now, in a major shift, American will axe service from New York and instead operate nonstop to Doha from its Philadelphia (PHL) hub.

Here’s what you should know about the change.

Philadelphia to Doha Service Begins This Fall

American confirmed that its Doha service will move from New York to Philadelphia beginning on October 29, 2023. The flight is expected to be operated by a Boeing 787-9, but an exact schedule has not yet been made available.

However, we do know that the nonstop route will offer connections from more than 80 destinations across North America to Doha. Furthermore, as part of American’s partnership with Qatar Airways, customers can connect in Doha to destinations across the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.

As American’s strategic partner and Oneworld alliance member, Qatar Airways currently operates 1 daily flight from Philadelphia to Doha. In New York, American is eliminating the daily Boeing 777-300ER service to Doha. Qatar Airways will continue to fly this route 2 times daily.

Hot Tip:

To get to Doha and beyond, you may want to consider flying Qatar Airways. Its Qsuite flagship business class product is arguably the best business class around.

Earning American Airlines Miles

While this specific flight between Philadelphia and Doha is not yet bookable (it’s expected to be in the coming days), here are a few ways to earn American miles.

Beyond flying on American or via its partners (like Qatar), one of the easiest ways to earn American AAdvantage miles is through sign-up bonuses and spending on American Airlines credit cards. Citi and Barclays both issue AAdvantage credit cards that let you earn American Airlines miles when using your card for purchases.

Final Thoughts

American is shifting one of its longest routes from New York’s JFK Airport to Doha (DOH) in an effort to boost operations at its Philadelphia hub. American will reach out to affected consumers who have already scheduled travel from New York after October 29 with alternative travel arrangements.
