Finnair has been a go-to program for booking Oneworld award tickets within North America — especially to and from Hawaii.

However, it has devalued its partner award chart for many Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines flights, including flights to Canada and, notably, Hawaii, with prices increasing more than 100% on some flights.

Here’s what you need to know about this unfortunate development.

Finnair Nerfs Hawaii Sweet Spot in Latest Devaluation

Finnair has issued a new award chart for Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines flights without notice, with many routes seeing price increases, as first noticed by Frequent Miler.

Flights to Canada and Hawaii are the main casualties of this devaluation, with flights between the U.S. and Canada increasing from 11,000 Avios each way in economy to 17,500. That’s an increase of almost 60%.

It gets worse when we look at flights to and from Hawaii, though. From points on the West Coast to the Midwest, economy flights increase from 13,500 Avios each way in economy to 19,500 Avios. And from the Midwest and East Coast, they increase from that same previous rate of 13,500 to 28,500 Avios each way, an increase of about 110%. That hurts.

Here’s a look at the new Finnair award chart for Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines flights, indicating one-way award costs:

It’s not entirely doom and gloom, however. Thankfully, Finnair’s award pricing for flights between the U.S. and Mexico is unchanged. You’ll still pay 12,500 Avios each way in economy, which is a solid deal.

And, Finnair’s award chart for American Airlines flights is intact — for now. You can still book AA flights between the Continental U.S. and Hawaii for just 15,000 Avios each way in economy, which is a great deal, especially for flights originating in the eastern half of the country. We hope this award chart isn’t next on the chopping block, so if you’ve been thinking about booking a Hawaii trip this way, we recommend doing so sooner rather than later.

If you do want to redeem Finnair Avios, it’s fairly easy to earn them. The airline uses Avios as its award currency, so you can freely move them between your accounts at Aer Lingus AerClubThe British Airways ClubClub Iberia PlusQatar Airways Privilege Club, and Vueling Club.

And because programs like The British Airways Club have major transfer partners, such as American Express Membership Rewards and Chase Ultimate Rewards, it’s easy to move points into that account and then to your Finnair Plus account to book award flights.

Final Thoughts

Unfortunately, using Finnair Avios on numerous North American flights operated by Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines has just gotten significantly more expensive. However, several other good-value awards remain intact, so if you’ve been thinking of booking a trip utilizing Finnair Plus, now’s the time to do so before the carrier increases prices again.
