Travelers based near Delta Air Lines hubs are no strangers to high airfare costs. In cities like Atlanta, Minneapolis, or Salt Lake City — where I recently moved — Delta’s strong market presence often leads to inflated ticket prices. I was shocked to discover that Delta charges over $350 for a short trip to Phoenix, while flying to see family in North Carolina would set me back at least $500.

Even though I have Delta Platinum Medallion elite status, it’s not much help with scoring complimentary upgrades. After all, I’ve moved to one of the airline’s major hubs, where nearly everyone has some level of status.

Fortunately, I remembered I had an unused perk on one of my travel credit cards — a valuable companion certificate — that could effectively cut the flight costs in half for my partner and me. However, this perk did have several strings attached, so let’s take a closer look at how I used this certificate offered by my Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card.

Overview of Delta Companion Certificates

At the start of 2024, Delta made sweeping changes to its co-branded credit cards. These updates brought new and improved perks and higher annual fees, for better or worse.

One of the most notable updates was to the annual companion ticket. Previously limited to travel within the contiguous U.S. states, these certificates can also be used for flights to Alaska, Hawaii, Mexico, and various destinations in the Caribbean and Central America.

This benefit is available on several Delta Amex cards: the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card, Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card, Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card, and Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card. The companion certificate is awarded each year after the renewal of your card.

With the Delta Reserve cards, the companion certificate can be used for first-class bookings (excluding Delta One cabins), while the Delta Platinum cards limit the ticket to Main Cabin flights. Regardless of which fare class you book, taxes and fees are capped at $80 for domestic flights and $250 for international flights.

Redeeming Delta Companion Certificates on a Trip to New York

My card renewal rolled around this summer, and I received a companion certificate on my Delta Platinum card shortly after paying the $350 annual fee (rates & fees). There are so many benefits (some require enrollment) to the Delta Platinum card that I use for everyday purchases — including up to $120 Resy credit and up to $120 rideshare credit — that I almost forgot about this valuable certificate, which effectively gets me 2-for-1 flights.

Planning an extended weekend between Salt Lake City and New York City this fall presented the perfect opportunity to use this companion ticket. Unfortunately, using these certificates isn’t as easy as finding your desired round-trip and booking them for 2 travelers.

Delta outlines specific fare classes that must be available:

  • Delta Platinum Main Cabin fare classes: L, U, T, X, V
  • Delta Reserve Comfort+, Premium Select, and First Class fare classes: W, S, A, G, I, Z

Overall, staying flexible with travel dates is the best way to find the fare classes you need to apply these certificates. Fortunately, there were multiple flights per day between the 2 airports, and we could move around some dates for our trip.

My round-trip flight in Main Cabin cost $381.96, which I actually paid for with The Platinum Card® from American Express to earn 5x points on flights booked directly with airlines or AmexTravel.com, up to $500,000 per calendar year. (In comparison, the Delta Platinum card awards just 3x miles on Delta purchases).

The ticket for my partner was just $30 (lucky him), giving us a discount of over 90% on his flight. I’m pleased with how I used the companion ticket, as this perk alone makes the Delta Platinum card’s annual fee worth it.

Because Delta is my designated airline for my Amex Platinum card, the taxes and fees for this ticket also triggered the airline incidental fee credit of up to $200 (enrollment required) — another major win.

Are Delta Companion Certificates Worth It?

Several airlines, like Southwest and Alaska, offer companion passes that allow you to enjoy BOGO flights. Delta’s version, while not the easiest to use, did see some improvements earlier this year. The certificate now covers a broader range of regions, making it more useful for international trips beyond domestic travel.

The main drawback I noticed, aside from the requirement for specific fare classes, is that the certificate can only be used for round-trip bookings. Since I typically book one-way flights, I was glad to finally find a way to take advantage of it for my upcoming trip.

If you’re a Delta Platinum Medallion or Diamond Medallion member, you can also stack regional or global upgrade certificates (RUCs or GUCs) with these companion tickets, which can add significant value if you’re lucky enough to get complimentary upgrades.

Final Thoughts

All told, the Delta Platinum card will remain firmly in my wallet, especially now that I live near a hub. This year, I saved $400 on flights by using my annual Delta companion ticket, and there are many other benefits on the card that I find valuable year after year.
