When American Express recently added new benefits to its family of Delta credit cards, one of them was a new set of monthly credits that can be used with various ride-sharing services (upon enrollment). While not everyone uses ride-shares on a regular basis, it’s important to take advantage of as many of these new perks as possible, especially since the annual fees on Delta’s credit cards also recently increased.

But you can’t just start charging rides to your Delta credit card and expect to get them free. It’s a little more complicated than that. Let’s take a look at how to use these new credits so you can be sure you’re getting your money’s worth.

Which Delta Cards Have Monthly Ride-Share Credits?

This new ride-share perk doesn’t extend to the entire family of Delta co-branded credit cards — here’s the list of cards that now feature up to $10 in monthly ride-share credits:

Since all 4 of these cards have the identical ride-share benefit, you’ll want to explore the other differences across the cards if you’re trying to decide which may be right for you.

Delta Platinum Card and Delta Platinum Business Card

How To Enroll for the Ride-Share Credits

If you have one of the 4 Delta cards with these new monthly ride-share credits, it’s extremely important that you enroll your card in this benefit before attempting to use it. Any ride-share charges made to your Delta credit card won’t earn any credits if you haven’t first enrolled the card.

Fortunately, enrollment is relatively simple, and you only have to do it once. Log into your American Express account online and scroll to the Benefits Dashboard, where you’ll find the option to enroll in various features of your Delta credit card, including the ride-share credits.

Delta ride share enrollment
Don’t forget to enroll your card in the ride-share credits before using it. Image Credit: American Express

Or, if you prefer, you can also enroll by calling the number on the back of your card. Just keep in mind that regardless of which method you use, enrollment may take up to 24 hours to take effect, so plan accordingly.

Which Ride-Share Services Count for the Credits?

The good news is you don’t have to guess whether a specific ride-share service will count toward earning the monthly credits. That’s because, according to the terms and conditions of this benefit, there are exactly 5 ride-share services that are eligible: Alto, Curb, Level, Revel, and Uber.

Most people are already familiar with Uber and Lyft, but the other services might be new to you.

Curb is an app that lets you request and pay for taxis — it’s available in over 30 cities, including Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C.

Revel is a company that owns and operates a fleet of all-electric vehicles in New York City and some of the surrounding area.

Alto features luxury vehicles with service in Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, and Miami.

Ride-Sharing Overseas

Of the 5 eligible ride-share services, only Uber operates outside of the U.S. and Canada. However, the monthly credits can only be earned on rides in the U.S., so don’t plan to try and use them when you’re overseas or across the border.

Food Delivery and Other Ride-Share Services

In addition to ride-shares, some of these companies offer other services, such as Uber Eats for food delivery and Lyft’s scooters and bike rentals. However, the terms of the monthly credits specifically note that:

“Eligible purchases do not include delivery services (for example, food, packages, groceries, pet food, toys or retail clothing), bikeshare, scooter, car rental, transit, membership, or any other non-rideshare services offered by the rideshare providers.”

So you’ll likely be out of luck if you try to use these credits for anything but ride-shares. But if you’re able to take advantage of one of these ride-share services regularly, either in your home city or when you travel, these credits should save you some money.

Hot Tip:

There’s currently 1 other way to take advantage of these credits besides using them directly for a ride-share. As of this writing, adding Lyft Cash to your account in the Lyft app will trigger the credit. However, the minimum Lyft Cash amount is $25, so you’ll still end up paying for $15 of that after the $10 monthly credit is deducted. Also, you won’t find the option to add Lyft Cash in the Android app or online — it only works in the iOS app.

How To Use the Ride-Share Credits

Once you’ve enrolled your card in the ride-share benefit and chosen one of the eligible services from the list, using the credits is very easy. All you need to do is add your Delta credit card to the ride-share app and then pay for your ride with it. After the charge is posted to your account, you’ll automatically see a credit of up to $10 for it.

According to American Express, it may take up to 6 to 8 weeks after an eligible purchase is charged to the enrolled account for the statement credit to post. However, in reality, these credits usually appear on your account relatively quickly, within a few days or a week at most. But if the credit doesn’t appear, you’ll likely have to wait the full 8 weeks before you can file a complaint with Amex.

What if your ride costs less than $10? You’ll only get a credit up to the amount of your ride-share cost, but you’re able to use these credits over multiple purchases. So, if you take another ride-share in the same month, you can earn the rest of the credit that way. However, these monthly credits don’t “roll over” from month to month — you’ll need to use it or lose it.

Authorized Users

If you have an authorized user on your card, can they use the ride-share credit as well? Yes, they can, as long as the primary cardmember has enrolled their own account in the benefit.

However, you only get 1 set of credits per account — there aren’t any extra credits each month for having an authorized user. The credits are shared across all cards tied to a single account. So, if your authorized user takes a ride-share and uses up the $10 credit in a particular month, you won’t be able to use the credit that month on your own card.

Are the Ride-Share Credits Worth It?

Lyft passengers and driver
If you use ride-shares regularly, you’ll find it easy to earn the Delta monthly credits. Image Credit: Lyft

Since these credits are effectively restricted to actual rides and can’t be used on any of the other related ride-share services, whether you typically utilize ride-shares will determine if the credits are worth it.

Many people use ride-shares multiple times a month, while others rarely need them. It’s also not unusual nowadays to rely on ride-shares when traveling to easily get around a new area instead of renting a car.

If you already use ride-shares regularly, either at home or on the road, these credits will be easy to use each month and help offset your card’s annual fee. On the other hand, if you never use ride-shares, you’ll want to ensure you’re taking advantage of the other perks of your Delta credit card to get as much value from it as possible.

Hot Tip:

Set your Delta Platinum card, Delta Platinum Business card, Delta Reserve card, or Delta Reserve Business card as your default payment card in 1 or all of the qualifying ride-share apps. That way, you’ll automatically use the credit whenever you find yourself in a ride-share.

Final Thoughts

While it’s never fun to have the annual fee on your credit card go up, at least Delta and American Express have added more benefits, like the new monthly ride-share credits, to help offset the extra cost. As with all credit cards, when changes happen, you should consider whether the new perks fit your lifestyle. If they don’t, it’s time to consider changing things up and looking at some new credit card options.

These Delta ride-share credits are relatively simple to use for those who take ride-shares even once or twice a month. They can easily earn you up to $120 a year in money that goes right back into your pocket, making them one of the easier new perks to take advantage of each month.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the Delta credit card ride-share credits?

The Delta ride-share credits are a new benefit available on specific Delta credit cards. They provide up to $10 each month in statement credits when you use qualifying ride-share services and charge the ride to your eligible Delta credit card.

Which Delta credit cards give ride-share credits?

The Delta ride-share credits are available on 4 credit cards: the Delta Platinum card, the Delta Platinum Business card, the Delta Reserve American Express card, and the Delta Reserve Business card.

Which ride-share services can I use my Delta credits on?

Eligible Delta credit card members can use their ride-share credits with 5 services: Alto, Curb, Level, Revel, and Uber. Only rides taken within the U.S. will qualify for the credits.

How do I use my Delta ride-share credits?

Before using your ride-share credits, you must first enroll your eligible Delta credit card either online at the American Express website or by calling the number on the back of your card. Then, once you’re enrolled, simply charge your ride (or several rides if each one is less than $10) to your credit card when using one of the qualifying ride-share services, and you’ll receive a credit of up to $10 each month.

Can you combine monthly Delta ride-share credits?

The up to $10 in monthly Delta ride-share credits do not roll over from month to month, so you cannot combine them. Essentially they’re “use them or lose them” since they’ll disappear if you don’t utilize them by the end of each month.
