Among the airport lounges you can visit, the American Express Global Lounge Collection tends to get positive reviews. Specifically, the issuer’s proprietary Centurion Lounges are definitely better than some of the broom closets labeled as lounges these days.

American Express Centurion Lounges are available in the U.S. and internationally. Non-standard elements at these lounges run the gamut of locations, from Japan to New York and down to Mexico. Inside, can expect a well-stocked bar, complimentary food, comfortable seating, showers, and complimentary Wi-Fi.

Below, we’ll talk about the lounges with unique amenities you won’t find elsewhere.

1. Coffee Bar in Seattle and New York City

Seattle (SEA)’s Centurion Lounge underwent a major renovation and expansion and reopened for guests in early 2023. That upgrade project included a very Seattle feature: a full-service coffee bar.

While you can help yourself to some drip coffee or use an espresso machine at most lounges, the Blue Roast by American Express provides made-to-order espresso-based drinks, coffees, and cold brews, as well as seasonal drinks, smoothies, and even healthy bites. A handmade latte sure beats what’s available at most airport lounges.

You know why New York is the city that never sleeps? Lots of caffeine. This feature was so popular at Seattle’s airport that Amex brought it to the Centurion Lounge at New York (JFK) in 2024, allowing guests to get made-to-order drinks at no charge, rather than paying overpriced airport drink prices.

Your latte may also come with the Amex or Centurion logo on the foam, and drinks at the NYC Blue Roast location also include 1850 chocolate.

2. Terraces in Atlanta and Tokyo

Who doesn’t love getting some fresh air at the airport? There are 2 Centurion Lounges with outdoor terraces: the Centurion Lounge in Atlanta (ATL) and the Centurion Lounge in Tokyo-Haneda (HND).

The Atlanta (ATL) location has 3 terraces, including the interior spot (seen above), the outer terrace (below), and even a private terrace reserved exclusively for those with Amex Centurion-level cards, which are available by invitation only. All the terraces are set up for year-round use and have landscaping to make them feel greener than your average airport space.

The sole Centurion Lounge in Japan is found at Tokyo’s Haneda airport (HND). It has an outdoor terrace that feels similar to Atlanta’s in terms of layout and furniture. There’s a partial glass wall, ample seating, fresh air, and views for aviation geeks. However, it may close during certain parts of the year.

3. Whiskey Bar in Atlanta

The Centurion Lounge in Atlanta (ATL) has another unique feature: a whiskey bar. Called Reserve by American Express, it’s near the main bar, and you can access the smaller terrace directly from the whiskey bar.

At Reserve, you can try over 20 classic and new American whiskeys, including specialty whiskey cocktails by renowned mixologist Jim Meehan. Due to Georgia’s liquor laws, alcohol is only available from 10:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Monday to Saturday (with limited-alcohol breakfast cocktails 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.) and from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. on Sunday.

The bar provides a modern take on a classic whiskey bar, including dark finishes and caramel-colored leather seating.

4. Speakeasy in New York

The Centurion Lounge at JFK has another exclusive amenity: the 1850 speakeasy, named for the year American Express was founded. After passing the bar, you’ll find this spot on the lower level behind a copper door. Alternatively, you can find an entrance to 1850 near the restrooms.

You’ll find a cool place to hang out here, and you’ll also find specialty cocktails not available at the 2 main bars in the lounge proper.

5. Craft Beer Bar in Denver

There are over 70 breweries in Denver, so having a craft beer bar at Denver (DEN)’s Centurion Lounge makes perfect sense. Here, you’ll find a rotating selection of local brews from breweries including Denver Beer Co., Odd13 Brewery, Breckenridge Brewery, and Left Hand Brewing Company.

There’s also a full bar available at this lounge with locally inspired cocktails and premium wines.

6. Massages in Mexico City

The Benito Juarez International Airport in Mexico City (MEX) has multiple Centurion Lounges spread across Terminals 1 and 2, covering domestic and international departures. The MEX Centurion Lounge in Terminal 1’s international departures area and the sole lounge in Terminal 2 each have spas, and you can get a complimentary massage.

Beyond the complimentary massages, additional services include manicures, pedicures, haircuts, and facials. These services are available during the respective lounge’s opening hours.

The lounge in Terminal 2 is temporarily closed due to renovations, but it should reopen later this year.

7. Shoe Shining in Mexico City

Shoeshine services are available at all 4 Centurion Lounge locations at the MEX airport. If you need to ensure your shoes look nice before heading to an important event, you can do so here.

8. Wellness Rooms in Los Angeles and Tokyo

The Los Angeles (LAX) Centurion Lounge and Tokyo-Haneda Centurion Lounge have dedicated wellness spaces.

At the LAX airport, travelers will find a sunrise and moonrise room with matching lighting to help them adjust to new time zones. The sunrise room is reserved for Centurion® Card from American Express cardholders only.

At Tokyo’s Haneda airport, guests will find private booths that work equally well for phone calls or meditation, due to their traditional Japanese artwork, acoustic paneling, and curated audio programs that include the calming sounds of water, forests, birds, and wind.

9. Japanese Sweets Bar (Plus a Live Kitchen!) in Tokyo

Wrapping up, we’re back in Tokyo for a pair of features unavailable at other Centurion Lounges: a traditional Japanese sweets bar and a live kitchen.

The Haneda Centurion Lounge has a special menu put together by Chef Satoshi Ogino, but there’s also a live kitchen where guests can get traditional Japanese fare. Think sushi and ramen.

The lounge also has a dedicated sweets bar where guests can enjoy teas and a rotating selection of sweets — including traditional Japanese Wagashi sweets.

How To Access Centurion Lounges

You’ll need a premium American Express card to get in. Paying to get in isn’t possible.

You’ll need a card like the Platinum Card® from American Express, The Business Platinum Card® from American Express, Centurion card, or Business Centurion® Card from American Express to get in. Additionally, those with the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card or Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card can get in when flying Delta the same day, so long as they booked their Delta flight with this card.

Delta SkyMiles Frequent Flyer Program

Guest admission rules at Centurion Lounges vary between lounges in the U.S. (which tend to be stricter) and international locations. Also note that you can’t enter lounges after arriving on a flight — only before departure or during a connection.

You must have a same-day confirmed ticket, government ID, and eligible card to show at the door.

Hot Tip:

Centurion Lounges aren’t the only lounges you can access with the Amex Platinum card or Amex Business Platinum card. They are some of the best, to be clear, but you can also access other lounges in the Global Lounge Collection, including Priority Pass lounges upon enrollment.

Final Thoughts

Some amenities are only available at select Centurion Lounges, such as sweets, drinks, and taking care of your body or your shoes. Many of Amex’s lounge features are standard, such as food, a bar, restrooms, and comfortable seating. You’ll also find showers at many of these lounges.

However, only 2 lounges have outdoor terraces, and only 1 lounge has a speakeasy.

If the Blue Roast full-serve coffee bar is any example, the overwhelming popularity of a lounge amenity could lead to Amex adding it to other lounges.
