Hainan Airlines is one of China’s largest airlines. Though not quite as big as Air China, China Southern, or China Eastern, this airline holds the honor of the largest civilian-run airline in China.

Even more interesting is the fact that Hainan Airlines represents one of many subsidiary airlines owned by HNA Group, one of the world’s largest conglomerates. HNA Group has flown under the radar for the most part, up until the suspicious death of its CEO in 2018.

Nonetheless, Hainan Airlines operates a huge route network of point-to-point routes, along with its fellow subsidiary airlines under the HNA Group umbrella. Hainan Airlines also helms HNA Group’s frequent flyer program, Fortune Wings Club. Other subsidiaries, such as Hong Kong Airlines, use the program as well.

While we’ve already written extensively on the best ways to redeem Hainan Airlines Fortune Wings Club points, in this guide we’ll be taking a deep dive to analyze earning Fortune Wings Club points.

Sign Up for a Hainan Airlines Fortune Wings Club Account

The first thing you’ll want to do is make an account at the Fortune Wings Club’s registration page.

Here are the steps you can follow:

  1. Read through and accept the terms and conditions.
  2. Enter your personal information, contact details, and create a password. Check off the box that says I agree to the Terms & Conditions and Privacy Policy.
  3. Click Submit.
  4. Verify your Fortune Wings Club account via email.

After your account is officially created, you’ll be assigned a frequent flyer number. You will need to use this number any time you want to earn or redeem points.

Earn Fortune Wings Club Points With Credit Cards

In the U.S., you’ll be able to easily earn Fortune Wings Club points through credit card spending, thanks to attractive partnerships with mainstream banks.

1. Marriott Bonvoy Credit Cards

A great way to earn Fortune Wings Club points is to transfer from the most versatile flexible rewards currency in the world: Marriott Bonvoy.

Marriott Bonvoy enjoys the largest list of transfer partners, and you can earn lots of Marriott Bonvoy points easily, making this method a fantastic way to accelerate your point balance.

Marriott Bonvoy transfers to Fortune Wings Club at a 3:1 ratio. You’ll get 1 Hainan Airlines point for every 3 Marriott Bonvoy points transferred. Plus, for every 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points you transfer to Fortune Wings Club, you’ll earn a bonus of 5,000 points, bringing up your total to 25,000 points instead of 20,000.

Marriott Bonvoy takes around 8 business days for points to transfer, which is something you’ll want to keep in mind if you’re looking to redeem points.

2. Refer a Friend for Bonus Points

Chase and American Express both offer co-branded Marriott Bonvoy credit cards, and you can leverage the referral bonus structure to earn even more Marriott Bonvoy points.

With Chase, you’ll need to visit the Refer-a-Friend page, enter your account information, and generate a link. You can also email a referral link to send out to your friends and family.

With American Express, you can refer your friend to any American Express card as long as you have a single Amex card. However, the referral bonus will be in the rewards points of the Amex card you refer from. For example, you’ll want to refer your friend from an Amex Marriott Bonvoy card if you wish to earn Marriott Bonvoy points from the referral bonus.

However, it doesn’t matter what card your referred friend ends up apply for; they could apply for any of the best Amex credit cards, even if you referred them from an Amex Marriott Bonvoy card.

3. Non-U.S.-based Credit Cards

There are tons of opportunities for non-U.S. residents to earn lots of Hainan Airlines points. As you can imagine, these co-branded opportunities for credit card accrual are confined to China and Hong Kong, which constitute an overwhelming majority of activity on Hainan Airlines.

Here are all the official co-branded Fortune Wings Club credit card options, across numerous banks in Asia:

4. Other Financial Partners

There are many other financial partners you can transfer points from to earn Fortune Wings Club points. These are foreign entities with their own transferable rewards system, similar to American Express Membership Rewards or Chase Ultimate Rewards.

Here are the financial services companies that offer opportunities to earn Fortune Wings Club points:

Earn Points Through Travel

One of the easiest ways to earn Hainan Airlines’ points is to credit paid travel to Fortune Wings Club. Thanks to a decent list of airline partners, you can earn points on travel that you wouldn’t have otherwise thought of.

5. Airfare and Airline Purchases

Hainan Airlines A350 Business Class Seat - Cherag Dubash

HNA Group, as mentioned above, owns many airlines, one of which is Hainan Airlines. If you are a Fortune Wings Club member, you can earn flights on any of its member airlines.

For example, let’s look at a nonstop flight from Boston (BOS) to Beijing (PEK) on Hainan Airlines. You’ll earn a base rate of 10 points per ¥10 (~$1.44). So, if this was a $1,000 ticket (base fare and carrier-imposed surcharges, excluding taxes), then you’d earn 6,944 points.

6. Crediting Partner Airlines to Fortune Wings Club

You can also credit non-HNA Group airline tickets on select partners to Fortune Wings Club:

To get an in-depth idea of the accrual structures, click on the desired airline link above. For example, if you fly on Etihad Airways on a round-trip K-class ticket in economy from Washington, D.C. (IAD) to Abu Dhabi (AUH), you’ll earn 75% of the total flight distance. That means that for the round-trip journey totaling 14,176 miles, you’ll earn 75% of that, which is 10,632 points!

7. Car Rental Partners

Currently, Fortune Wings Club partners with 2 car rental companies to earn points: Hertz and Rentalcars.com.

When you book car rentals on Rentalcars.com, you can earn 1 Fortune Wings Club point for every HK$5 (~$0.64) spent. This is an excellent deal since the value of the points you’ll get is likely more than the amount you’re spending. To qualify, you need to provide your Fortune Wings Club number during the booking process. Only the base fare is eligible for point accrual; any optional equipment or other fees are ineligible for points accrual. It may take 6 to 8 weeks for points to post to your account. Retroactive claims can be made up to 6 months after the transaction.

Hertz is also a car rental partner of Fortune Wings Club. You’ll earn 800 points per rental when renting Hertz cars outside of Asia, 400 points per rental when renting Hertz cars within Asia, and 400 points per rental when renting Hertz cars on business contracts or government agreements. To earn Fortune Wings Club points for Hertz rentals, you must provide your Fortune Wings Club membership information and Hertz discount code CDP #1628570.

10. Earn Points Through Shopping

The only shopping partner that Fortune Wings Club partners with is Florentia Village. Florentia Village is a chain of designer outlets that sell luxury-branded products, such as Gucci, Givenchy, and Louis Vuitton.

Florentia Village locations are present throughout China, but the only way to earn Fortune Wings Club points is by spending at the Florentia Village Hong Kong. You’ll earn 1 Fortune Wings Club point for every HK$3 spent.

To earn points, present your shopping receipts and your physical or electronic Fortune Wings Club membership card to the customer service center. Keep in mind that points may take up to 8 weeks to post.

If you don’t remember to show your receipts and membership information on the day of the visit, you can email your receipt to hka.ffp@hkairlines.com to retroactively claim your points up to 1 month after the transaction.

Specialty Earnings for Fortune Wings Club

11. Buy Points

Fortune Wings Club offers the option to buy or gift points. Although it isn’t currently available due to website updates, it will be possible when the website is back online again.

You can buy up to 60,000 points in a single transaction and up to 80,000 points per calendar year. After the points are purchased, they will appear in your account within 24 hours.

To buy points, you’ll need to have a Fortune Wings Club that has been open for at least 30 days. Lastly, you can’t buy points if your points balance is 0, which means you’ll need to have earned some points before buying points.

Final Thoughts

Hainan Airlines operates a frequent flyer program called Fortune Wings Club that is shared by its parent company’s subsidiaries. There aren’t that many ways to earn Hainan Airlines points outside of credit card spending.

This is primarily due to its absence in a major airline alliance and lack of proper partners for U.S. travelers. However, your best chance at earning lots of Fortune Wings Club points is to use the methods outlined in this guide.
