Aegean Airlines is the flag carrier of Greece, and it’s also the largest Greek airline overall. As a Star Alliance member since 2010, it operates important regional flights connecting the rest of Europe to Greece.

A publicly-traded airline, Aegean Airlines offers flights to 150+ destinations from its hubs in Athens (ATH), Larnaca (LCA), and Thessaloniki (SKG) with its fleet of 50+ narrowbody planes.

And while you may be able to traverse the world without ever flying on this airline, you’ll be intrigued by how its frequent flyer program is a secret weapon for points enthusiasts.

In this guide, we’ll be dissecting the Aegean Airlines Miles+Bonus frequent flyer program and showing you why it’s one of our favorite picks for redeeming frequent flyer miles.

The Pros and Cons of Aegean Airlines Miles+Bonus

While Aegean Airlines Miles+Bonus has been devalued in the past, this loyalty program has been one of the tried-and-true ways you can book specific award flights at some of the lowest prices out there.

So without further ado, let’s get into the broad pros and cons of using Aegean Airlines Miles+Bonus miles for award travel.

Here are the biggest pros of using Aegean miles for award redemptions:

  • Modest award change fees
  • Great redemption prices
  • Generous region definitions
  • Access to diverse Star Alliance routes
  • Simple, region-based award chart
  • Miles are valid for a whopping 60 months

Here are the biggest cons of using Aegean miles for award redemptions:

  • Miles are hard to earn
  • No stopovers or open-jaws allowed
  • Nearly all awards have to be booked over the phone
  • All fuel surcharges are passed on
  • The only way to extend mileage expiration is with a paid flight
  • The frequent flyer program has been prone to devaluations without notice

Using Your Aegean Airlines Miles

Aegean Airlines employs straightforward award ticket pricing strategies with 2 award charts:

  • Aegean Airlines- and Olympic Air-operated flights
  • Star Alliance partner award chart

And while Aegean Airlines Miles+Bonus publishes a mileage calculator, it’s only valid for Aegean Airlines and Olympic Air (subsidiary) flights, so we don’t recommend using it.

Since Aegean Airlines operates short-haul and regional flights, it uses a straightforward distance multiplier award chart. As you can see, international flights also have a minimum redemption amount.

For example, if you are redeeming Aegean miles for a business class flight between Athens (ATH) and Munich (MUC), you would fly a total of 944 miles in distance, which means that 15x that distance is equal to 14,160 miles. However, the minimum is 15,000 miles, so you’d redeem 15,000 Aegean miles instead of 14,160 miles.

Aegean Airlines uses a region-based award chart for partner flight redemptions.

In the above table, Y stands for economy, C stands for business class, and F stands for first class. Premium economy redemptions are not available.

As we mentioned earlier, Aegean Airlines is in the Star Alliance, which means that you can redeem Aegean miles for award tickets and upgrades on these partners:

If you analyze the region definitions, you’ll notice several interesting categorizations. For example, North America includes the U.S. (excluding Hawaii), Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean.

South America is lumped into a single region, meaning that flights to Northern South America will cost the same as flights to Southern South America!

The Far East includes North Asia and most of Southeast Asia, which means intra-Far East flights can be exceptional deals.

Interestingly, Israel is categorized in North Africa instead of the Middle East.

Lastly, Oceania not only includes Australia and New Zealand but also the rest of the islands in the Pacific, which means that intra-Oceania flights can be fantastic deals.

Awards Bookable Online vs. Phone

For the most part, you can use the online website to book award flights.

But, you’ll need to have sufficient miles in your account to view award availability online. This means that you’ll want to search on a site like United or Air Canada before transferring any points to Miles+Bonus.

You can also call Miles+Bonus to search for award space. Unfortunately, Aegean Airlines doesn’t have a U.S. service center, so you have to call its international call center at +30-210-6261000.

Also, award bookings over the phone are subject to a small booking fee of €20 (~$22).

Award Redemption Rules

Aegean Airlines Miles+Bonus doesn’t have any special or alarming redemption rules. Stopovers aren’t permitted, fuel surcharges are passed on, and there is no waitlisting allowed.

Award tickets do not price per segment as long as it is a valid itinerary, so you’re not limited to nonstop flights for award pricing.

You can redeem Aegean miles for anybody, and change/refund fees are very mild.

Change fees are the same price as award refund fees, €20 (~$22) per ticket. You can request cancellation up to 30 minutes before departure through the call center.

Past this window, a no-show policy is applied whereby all segments are canceled and a no-show fee of €30 (~$33) is levied to redeposit your miles and get a refund of the taxes and fees.

For infant award travel (<2 years old), you will only be responsible for taxes with no additional booking fee. However, you cannot add an infant via Miles+Bonus with flights on these airlines:

  • Air China
  • Air India
  • ANA
  • EVA Air
  • Shenzhen Airlines
  • Singapore Airlines
  • TAP Portugal
  • THAI

Instead, you have to contact the operating airline directly and likely pay a fee of 10% to 25% of the cash fare to add an infant ticket to the reservation.

How To Boost Your Aegean Airlines Miles

Aegean Airlines Miles+Bonus doesn’t have any 1:1 transfer partners. Instead, its sole transfer partner is Marriott Bonvoy, which comes at a 3:1 transfer ratio.

Also, you will earn an extra 5,000 Aegean miles for every 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points transferred. That means that if you transfer 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points, you’ll end up with 25,000 Aegean miles, instead of 20,000 miles.

While this ratio isn’t as nice as a 1:1 ratio, there are tons of ways to earn lots of Marriott Bonvoy points with ease, so you’ll rack up points very quickly!

As a reminder, Marriott Bonvoy transfers take around 3 business days to process.

The 20 Best Ways To Use Your Aegean Airlines Miles

There are tons of different ways to use Aegean miles for phenomenal value, and the rest of this guide is dedicated to walking you through the absolute best redemptions you can make.

These will be focused on business and first class flights because that’s where you can get incredible value, so keep that in mind.

We don’t recommend transferring Marriott Bonvoy points proactively — instead, wait until you have solidified travel plans, then search for award availability. When you’ve decided on a flight you want to book, you can transfer your Marriott Bonvoy points.

Let’s get started!

1. Fly up to 20 Hours in Lufthansa First Class From North America to South Africa (75,000 Miles)

Lufthansa B747-8 First Class Cabin - Cherag Dubash

One of our favorite sweet spot redemptions with Aegean Airlines miles is on Lufthansa’s legendary first class product.

These exclusive, open-air suites have tons of room, incredible catering, unforgettable La Prairie amenities, and excellent service.

Lufthansa’s first class is found mostly aboard the 747-8, also known as the Queen of the Skies.

There are few better ways to fly across the Atlantic than this. Flying Lufthansa first class from North America to South Africa with a layover in Germany is an incredible way to savor up to 21 hours of first class for an exceptionally low mileage price of 75,000 miles.

The only thing you’ll need to consider is that you’ll pay around $900 in taxes and fees (mostly fuel surcharges) if you’re flying from the U.S. If you’re flying from South Africa, you’ll pay around $500 in taxes and fees.

Here are some great example redemptions you can make:

  • Chicago (ORD) – Frankfurt (FRA) – Johannesburg (JNB) one-way in Lufthansa first class for 75,000 Aegean miles + ~$685 in taxes and fees
  • Los Angeles (LAX) – Frankfurt (FRA) – Johannesburg (JNB) one-way in Lufthansa first class for 75,000 Aegean miles + ~$685 in taxes and fees
  • New York (JFK) – Frankfurt (FRA) – Johannesburg (JNB) one-way in Lufthansa first class for 75,000 Aegean miles + ~$685 in taxes and fees

2. Fly Business Class One-way Within the Far East (32,500 Miles)

Because of the generous definition of the Far East, yet another awesome sweet spot is for business class flights within the Far East region.

For 32,500 miles one-way, you can access up to 8 hours of top-notch ANA business class! That’s less than how much some other frequent flyer programs charge for coach!

Here are some great example redemptions you can make:

  • Tokyo (HND/NRT) – Bangkok (BKK) one-way in ANA business class for 32,500 Aegean miles + ~$222 in taxes and fees
  • Tokyo (HND/NRT) – Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) one-way in ANA business class for 32,500 Aegean miles + ~$149 in taxes and fees
  • Tokyo (HND/NRT) – Jakarta (CGK) one-way in ANA business class for 32,500 Aegean miles + ~$259 in taxes and fees
  • Tokyo (HND/NRT) – Singapore (SIN) one-way in ANA business class for 32,500 Aegean miles + ~$220 in taxes and fees

3. Book SWISS Air Business Class Between Europe and the Middle East (30,000 Miles)

SWISS Air business throne seat

SWISS Air is a solid carrier overall, offering an exceptional first class product and a solid business class product. As a Star Alliance member, SWISS Air flights can be booked using Aegean miles, though first class isn’t possible.

This business class also features a select few “throne” seats — essentially seats that occupy the same space as 2 seats — so you’ll want to snag those if you’re a solo traveler.

SWISS Air is known for solid food and beverage, as well as a comfortable seat and great service, though you probably won’t find the best amenity kits or inflight entertainment here.

In particular, one of the best sweet spots with Aegean miles is for one-way redemptions between Europe and the Middle East in business class. Because the cash prices of these are incredibly expensive when you consider that they aren’t ultra-long-haul flights, this presents a great opportunity to use miles and get a great deal!

Here are some great example redemptions you can make:

  • Zurich (ZRH) – Dubai (DXB) one-way in SWISS Air business class for 30,000 Aegean miles + ~$271 in taxes and fees
  • Zurich (ZRH) – Tel Aviv (TLV) one-way in SWISS Air business class for 30,000 Aegean miles + ~$130 in taxes and fees

4. Book ANA First Class Between Japan and Europe (90,000 Miles)

One of the most famous first class products in the world is ANA’s The Suite first class, exclusively available on select flights to and from Tokyo.

And although ANA first class is absolutely phenomenal no matter what route or plane you fly on, The Suite first class is the best of the best.

With Aegean Miles+Bonus, you can redeem just 90,000 miles for a one-way first class flight between Japan and Europe. Remember that if you depart from Japan, you’ll pay almost nothing in fuel surcharges, while departures from Europe will entail considerably higher taxes and fees.

Here is a great example redemption you can make:

  • Tokyo (HND) – London (LHR) one-way in ANA’s The Suite first class for 90,000 Aegean miles + ~$393 in taxes and fees

5. Book EVA Air Business Class Between Taiwan and Europe (65,000 Miles)

EVA Air’s award-winning business class product is one of the few in the world offering pajamas, Rimowa or Salvatore Ferragamo amenity kits, top-tier Champagne, and generous award availability.

With reverse herringbone seats, you’ll also enjoy an abundance of privacy, as well as a second-to-none soft product. Additionally, you will very rarely see large fuel surcharges, keeping your out-of-pocket cost very low.

Here are some great example redemptions you can make:

  • Taipei (TPE) – Milan (MXP) one-way in EVA Air business class for 65,000 Aegean miles + ~$102 in taxes and fees

  • Taipei (TPE) – Vienna (VIE) one-way in EVA Air business class for 65,000 Aegean miles + ~$102 in taxes and fees

Turkish Airlines offers one of the most diverse route networks in the world. This Star Alliance airline is famous for its hugely underrated business class product, but those who can see past its less-than-ideal seats privacy-wise will know that the soft product is awesome!

In particular, you can fly between North Africa and Turkey for just 25,000 Aegean miles in business class. Since Turkey is categorized within Europe, you can book neat lie-flat seats in business class for this price.

Here are some great example redemptions you can make:

  • Casablanca (CMN) – Istanbul (IST) one-way in Turkish Airlines business class for 25,000 Aegean miles + ~$162 in taxes and fees
  • Marrakesh (RAK) – Istanbul (IST) one-way in Turkish Airlines business class for 25,000 Aegean miles + ~$154 in taxes and fees

7. Fly Turkish Airlines Business Class One-way From North America to Central and Southern Africa (55,000 Miles)

This means your seats will be very private and your experience will be very comfortable. If you’d like to be pampered in Saks Fifth Avenue bedding and enjoy a convenient, nonstop flight to Africa, you’ll want to check this Aegean miles redemption out.

The classiest way to fly coast to coast with a Star Alliance airline in the U.S. is aboard United Airlines’s transcontinental Polaris class.

With the same hard product as its most premium international routes, it’s tough for domestic flights to get better than this.

You’ll enjoy a fully lie-flat seat with direct aisle access, excellent Saks bedding, and Sunday Riley amenities, as well as a full food and beverage program.

Flying within North America? Even though there are plenty of ways to fly in comfort, including United Polaris class, your travel plans might not include flying between the U.S. West Coast and East Coast.

Air Canada also offers a superb lie-flat product with reverse herringbone seats and solid amenities overall.

For just 21,000 Aegean miles, you can fly one-way in Air Canada business class anywhere within North America. Of course, even if you aren’t originating or ending in a major Canadian gateway, you can still fly in a lie-flat seat on a segment of your flight!

Air New Zealand is one of the most challenging business class products you can book. And although it isn’t the best business class product in the world, it’s a unique seat with a herringbone configuration and fun service to boot.

Air New Zealand’s long-haul route features lie-flat business class seats, but you don’t need to fly long-haul to enjoy a quality lie-flat product.

For 21,000 Aegean miles, you can book a one-way flight featuring a lie-flat Air New Zealand business class seat on select 787 or 777 routes within Oceania!

Here are some great example redemptions you can make:

We’ve already outlined Lufthansa first class as our first fantastic Aegean Miles+Bonus redemption, specifically for flights between the U.S. and South Africa via Germany.

But redeeming Aegean miles is also spectacularly valuable for Lufthansa first class routes between South America and Germany.

Why? Well, first of all, these are some of Lufthansa’s longest routes with first class. Additionally, if you’re flying from South America, you can potentially eliminate $800+ of fuel surcharges. Lastly, it costs just 75,000 Aegean miles for a first class flight between South America and Europe, which is an excellent deal.

Here are some great example redemptions you can make:

  • Buenos Aires (EZE) – Frankfurt (FRA) one-way in Lufthansa first class for 75,000 Aegean miles + ~$533 in taxes and fees
  • São Paulo (GRU) – Frankfurt (FRA) one-way in Lufthansa first class for 75,000 Aegean miles + ~$28 in taxes and fees

13. Fly United Polaris Class One-way Between the U.S. and South America (45,000 Miles)

United Boeing 787 Dreamliner Polaris Business Class Seats

Historically, United has been a leader in offering nonstop flights to South America. And while American Airlines takes the crown for its South American route network in Miami, it’s possible to fly on United Airlines Polaris class nonstop between the U.S. and South America.

For 45,000 Aegean miles, you can book some high-value routes between the U.S. and South America. Remember, though, that only a few of these routes will have the true United Polaris class product; a few of these flights feature older business class seats with a Polaris soft product.

Here are some great example redemptions you can make:

  • Chicago (ORD) – São Paulo (GRU) one-way in United Polaris class for 45,000 Aegean miles + ~$10 in taxes and fees

For just 55,000 Aegean Airlines miles, you can book some extremely cash-expensive tickets on Asiana Airlines. Interestingly, Asiana Airlines offers some solid routes to Central Asia, and if you start from Hawaii or end in Hawaii, you can fly via Seoul to and from Central Asia and the Near East.

Here are some great example redemptions you can make:

  • Honolulu (HNL) – Seoul (ICN) – Almaty (ALA) one-way in Asiana Airlines business class for 55,000 Aegean miles + ~$254 in taxes and fees

18. Book 2-Stop Business Class Itineraries Between Oceania and Africa (55,000 Miles)

If you’re looking to redeem Aegean miles on flights between Oceania and Africa, you’ll have a lot of trouble finding convenient itineraries in the Star Alliance.

You’ll be hard-pressed to find a business class itinerary that gets you from Oceania to Africa and vice-versa since almost all of them involve segments on Singapore Airlines.

Singapore Airlines seldom releases business/first class award availability to partner airlines, so you’ll mostly be out of luck when redeeming Aegean miles.

However, there are just a few routes that offer some incredible value in business class, considering that these tickets cost $10,000+ when paying cash.

Here are some great example redemptions you can make:

  • Melbourne (MEL) – Bangkok (BKK) – Addis Ababa (ADD) – Cape Town (CPT) one-way in THAI Airways and Ethiopian Airlines business class for 55,000 Aegean miles + ~$343 in taxes and fees
  • Sydney (SYD) – Tokyo (HND) – Frankfurt (FRA) – Lagos (LOS) one-way in ANA and Lufthansa business class for 55,000 Aegean miles + ~$875 in taxes and fees

19. Fly 2 ANA First Class Products Between Hawaii and Europe via Japan (100,000 Miles)

Did you know that ANA is the only Japanese airline that operates the A380? Deployed only on select routes between Japan and Hawaii, this first class product is industry-leading, even compared to its older 777 first class product (which is still phenomenal).

What if we told you that you could experience 2 top-notch first class products on the same itinerary using miles? You’d be saving $20,000+ per ticket, so this is a sensational redemption.

On transpacific flights between Hawaii and Europe via Japan, you can redeem 100,000 Aegean miles to fly a total of 20+ hours in first class, sampling 2 distinct first class products!

Here is a great example redemption you can make:

  • Honolulu (HNL) – Tokyo (HND/NRT) – London (LHR) one-way in ANA’s A380 and 777 first class for 100,000 Aegean miles + ~$603 in taxes and fees

20. Fly Asiana Airlines Business Class Between Hawaii and Saipan via Seoul (55,000 Miles)

Our very last redemption is an extremely niche one. Asiana Airlines flies to Saipan, which is the largest of the Northern Mariana Islands in the Pacific Ocean.

If you have the desire to visit this island, you can take advantage of great pricing on flights between Hawaii and Saipan via Seoul on Asiana Airlines for just 55,000 Aegean miles.

Here is a great example redemption you can make:

  • Honolulu (HNL) – Seoul (ICN) – Saipan (SPN) one-way in Asiana Airlines business class for 55,000 miles + ~$50 in taxes and fees

Final Thoughts

Aegean Airlines miles shouldn’t be ignored. Thanks to its unique region-based award pricing, its competitive mileage redemption rates, and its access to the Star Alliance route network, it’s possible to extract some amazing value from Aegean Airlines Miles+Bonus.

Even though it has been devalued without notice in the past and its miles are hard to earn (at least via transfer partners), you can still book some fantastic premium cabin itineraries, ranging from Asiana Airlines business class to Lufthansa and ANA first class!

Hopefully, this guide can stir up some inspiration and help you plan your next Aegean Airlines redemption.
