Qatar Airways is a Middle Eastern airline that flies nonstop to a number of destinations across the world, including 9 U.S. airportsAtlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C.

Many people appreciate that the airline has been so innovative with respect to its top-notch QSuites business class product.

The main downside with Qatar is the fact it requires quite a few miles to fly its own flights, and the fuel surcharges in premium cabins are heavy on certain routes.

In this article, I’ll cover all of the ways that you can earn Qatar Airways Qmiles, so you’ll have plenty of options if you’re looking to use Qmiles for an award flight.

Sign up for a Qatar Qmiles Account

The first step to start earning Qmiles is to head to the application page and sign up for a free account.

Once you’re registered with Qatar in its Privilege Club program, you’ll have the ability to earn miles from a variety of activities.

For example, when you fly on a Qatar Airways paid flight, you’ll earn Qmiles after the completion of your itinerary.

It’s important to keep track of your Qmiles account number, as this is what you’ll use to link your account with the points-earning activities.

Hot Tip: You will need to sign up for a Qatar Privilege account to be able to earn and redeem miles within Qatar’s loyalty program.

Earn Qatar Qmiles With Credit Cards

As with any loyalty program, you’ll want to focus on credit cards that partner with as many flexible point programs as possible to make it easier to earn the miles that you need.

You’re in luck here as Qatar partners with 3 out of the 5 big programs: Capital One, Citi, and Marriott.

All of these programs offer an array of personal and business credit cards, which significantly reduces the difficulty of earning Qmiles.

In essence, the more avenues that an airline offers to earn its miles, the smoother the process is to access any redemption in its award chart!

Hot Tip: Capital One has several interesting personal and business credit card offers with the revamp of its award program.

1. Capital One Credit Cards

Capital One has upped the ante with respect to its push into the transferable point credit card game.

As of December 10, 2018, cardmembers can now transfer points earned on select Capital One credit cards to 14 airline programs.

I love this move by Capital One as the bank seeks to compete against the heavyweights in Amex and Chase, since it gives travelers another opportunity to earn miles with spending on credit cards.

With that said, here are the Capital One cards we recommend checking out to help you earn miles in the program:

Recommended Capital One Cards That Earn Miles (Personal)

Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card - This card is packed with a lot more benefits and perks. Earn a 50,000 mile sign up bonus (worth $500 toward travel) once you spend $3,000 on purchases within 3 months from account opening. We recommend this as a no-brainer card if you even semi-regularly stay at hotels.
Capital One® VentureOne® Rewards Credit Card - This is an excellent card for those looking to earn 1.25x miles per $1 on every purchase. With a 20,000 mile sign up bonus (worth $200 toward travel) after spending $1,000 within the first 3 months and no annual fee, it's a strong choice.

Recommended Capital One Cards That Earn Miles (Business)

Capital One® Spark® Miles Select for Business - This no annual fee card earns unlimited 1.5x miles per dollar on every purchase and has a 20,000 mile sign up bonus [worth $200 in travel] after meeting the minimum spend of $3,000 within the first 3 months. Save on interest with 0% intro APR on purchases for 9 months; 13.99% - 23.99% variable APR after that.
Capital One® Spark® Miles for Business - This card earns unlimited 2x miles per dollar on every purchase, everywhere, and has a one-time bonus of 50,000 miles [worth $500 in travel] after spending $4,500 on purchases within the first 3 months. Plus, earn 5x miles on hotel and rental card bookings through Capital OneSM using a Spark Miles card. Annual Feel: $0 intro for the first year, $95 after that.

2. Citi Credit Cards

Citi and its ThankYou Rewards program have also made some noise by continuing to add airline transfer partners and offering transfer bonus points with certain airlines.

The main pause I have with this program is that Citi currently only has 1 credit card available to new members that earns transferable ThankYou points: the Citi ThankYou Premier.

But this is still a great card to have, as its welcome bonus is substantial and its bonus categories align well with the spending of those who travel regularly.

3. Marriott Credit Cards

The Marriott Bonvoy program rounds out the transferable point programs that Qatar Airways partners with.

What I like about Marriott is that the hotel offers quite a few business and personal credit cards.

If you’re patient with your credit card applications, you should be able to land welcome bonus offers of 75,000-100,000 points on most of the co-branded credit cards.

Another item worth mentioning about the Marriott program is that for every 60,000 points you transfer to an airline partner like Qatar, you’ll receive a 5,000-point bonus!

Marriott points transfer to most airline partners at a 3:1 ratio, so with the bonus you’re looking at 25,000 Qatar Qmiles (60,000 points / 3 = 20,000 miles + 5,000 mile bonus = 25,000 miles).

Here are the Marriott credit cards we recommend adding to your lineup of cards:

Marriott Bonvoy Boundless™ Credit Card - Earn 75,000 bonus points after spending $3,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. Get automatic silver elite status each account anniversary year; and a free night award (valued up to 35,000 points) every year after account anniversary.
Marriott Bonvoy Bold™ Credit Card - Earn 30,000 bonus points when you spend $1,000 on purchases in the first 3 months of account opening. Earn 3X points per $1 at participating Marriott Bonvoy hotels. A solid card for Marriott loyalists looking for a no-annual-fee card offering Marriott Bonvoy Silver Elite status.
Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card - earn 75,000 bonus points when you spend $3,000 on purchases in the first 3 months of account opening. A solid card for business owners who will get complimentary Marriott Bonvoy silver elite status. Annual fee is $125. Terms Apply. For rates and fees of the Bonvoy Business Card, click here.
Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Card - earn 75,000 bonus points when you spend $3,000 on purchases in the first 3 months of account opening. Earn 6x per $1 at participating Marriott Bonvoy hotels plus 3x at U.S restaurants and flights booked directly with airlines. Annual fee is $450. Terms Apply. For rates and fees of the Bonvoy Brilliant card, click here.

Bottom Line: Transferable point credit card spending will likely be the easiest way to earn the Qmiles you need for your next award flight.

Earn Qatar Qmiles Through Travel

As you would expect, one of the most straightforward ways to earn Qmiles other than credit card spending is to fly with Qatar or a partner airline.

The key point to understand when earning miles this way is how the airline you’re flying calculates the miles that you’ll earn.

4. Airline and Airfare Purchases

Privilege Club members earn Qmiles when flying on Qatar Airways or a Oneworld airline partner (full airline partnership list here).

The number of Qmiles a member earns on a Qatar Airways flight will be based on the booking class and distance of the flight.

The best way to determine the amount of Qmiles you will earn is to use a combination of the Qcalculator and the earning table below.

As with any airline, make sure to provide your Qmiles membership number when you book your flight, at check-in, or when using any Qatar travel partner, so that you’ll earn Qmiles.

In addition to the miles that you earn when you fly, Qatar offers other ways to earn its Qmiles too.

The first way to earn additional Qmiles is to make your flight reservation online. When you make your first online reservation, you’ll earn 2,000 bonus Qmiles.

Members also receive a 500-mile bonus for each subsequent booking from their desktop computer or mobile device.

Privilege Club has a Family Programme that is another way you can earn Qmiles. Anytime a family member flies with Qatar, Oneworld airlines, or uses the services of any of Qatar’s 60 global partners, you can earn Qmiles.

Hot Tip: If you would prefer to earn miles for a different airline, check out this in depth guide to help you know where to credit your airline miles.

5. Car Rentals & Other Transportation

Qatar Airways Car Rental Partners

If you use rental cars frequently, take note — Qatar partners with a number of car rental companies that allow you to earn Qmiles with each rental.

The number of miles you’ll earn will vary, so check the car rental partner page for more info.

Rental CompanyMiles
Avis500-800 Qmiles per rental
Budget500 Qmiles per rental
Europcar500 Qmiles per rental
Hertz500 Qmiles per rental
Rentalcars.com3 Qmiles per dollar spent
Sixt500-1,000 Qmiles per rental

Qmiles earned from Avis rentals vary depending on your Privilege Club status: Burgundy members earn 500 miles per rental, and Platinum members earn 800 miles per rental.

Europcar rentals have an additional bonus that’s worth mentioning too. Privilege Club Platinum and Gold members will earn an additional 500 Qmiles bonus when booking a Premium Rental.

With Hertz, Privilege Club members receive a 10% discount on their rental. That’s in addition to the Qmiles that you’ll earn!

For those needing a Mercedes or BMW rental, Sixt offers a 10% discount for Privilege Club Silver members and a 15% discount for Privilege Club Gold and Platinum members.

6. Book With Hotel Partners

Qatar has more than 50 hotel partners, with each partner providing its own variety of point earning opportunities.

Whether you are a Hilton, Hyatt, Marriott, or another hotel elite, Privilege Club has a partnership with nearly every major hotel brand.

7. Book Vacation Packages

Qatar Airways Holidays, the leisure division of Qatar Airways, offers tailor-made holidays to worldwide destinations. They have travel packages ranging from city life to touring, adventure, cruises, spa breaks, and exclusive honeymoons.

Members also receive complimentary city tours, airport transfers, insurance, and car rentals at select destinations. You can book a vacation package at qatarairwaysholidays.com or at any of the Qatar holiday shops in Bahrain, Dammam, Doha, Dubai, Kuwait, and Muscat.

When booking a vacation package, Privilege Club members earn 1 Qmile for every QAR 5 spent (3.64 QAR = 1 USD).

Bottom Line: Of the miles-earning opportunities in this section, flying Qatar or one of its partners will be the most efficient way to earn Qmiles.

Specialty Earnings for Qatar Qmiles

In addition to its airline, banking, car rental, and hotel partnerships, Qatar has several out-of-the-box ways that its members can earn Qmiles.

8. Shopping Through Akruu.com

Qatar doesn’t have its own shopping portal, but that doesn’t mean you can’t earn Qmiles with online shopping.

Head over to Akruu.com, a global commerce platform with nearly 1,500 plus merchants and affiliate partners, where you’ll get access to around 10 million shopping offers online.

9. Shop at Collection of Villages

Boutique shoppers may find value in the partnership with Collection of Villages, which has shops in Barcelona, Bologna, Brussels, Cologne, Dublin, Frankfurt, London, Madrid, Milan, Munich, and Paris.

After you’ve finished shopping, present your receipts for all qualifying purchases with your Privilege Membership Card to earn 1.25 Qmiles per €1 in Europe, £1 in London, or CNY10 in China.

10. Purchasing Travel Insurance

For those needing insurance when traveling, check out Columbus Travel Insurance.

When you buy a policy, use the code QATAIR to receive 4 Qmiles per 1 USD.

Hot Tip: If you already plan on buying travel insurance, see how these insurance package options compare to others in the market.

11. Buy Jewelry

Check out one of Joyalukkas 120 retail locations to earn 1 Qmile for every 2 USD spent on any jewelry at participating Joyalukkas outlets in Bahrain, Kuwait, Malaysia, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, United Arab Emirates, U.K., and the U.S.

12. Learn a Language

Privilege Club members can subscribe to a language course and earn 250 to 4,500 Qmiles with each course that you purchase from Language Direct.

13. Booking Reservations

ResPlus is a rewards program for executive and administrative assistants.

The program allows Privilege Club members to earn points for reservations they book on behalf of their colleagues when they travel on business at Fairmont, Raffles, and Swissotel properties.

Bottom Line: Earning Qmiles in these ways is extremely niche, but it can be a great way to pad your balance of Qmiles.

Final Thoughts

For an airline that’s not covered that much in the points and miles world, Qatar offers its Privilege Club members quite a number of ways to earn Qmiles.

The most efficient way to earn Qmiles (assuming you don’t fly Qatar or its airline partners regularly), is to put your spending on a transferable points credit card offered by Capital One, Citi, or Marriott.

All in all, Qatar is not my favorite airline currency to hold, though there are several uses of Qmiles that we covered in the best ways to use Qmiles that are worth looking into.

About Michael McHugh

Born and raised in Mobile, Alabama, Michael took his first international trip in 2013 with friends to the Bahamas. Although he didn't travel much in his younger years, on that trip, he caught the travel bug and has been hooked ever since. Michael first caught wind of the points and miles game in 2014 while at a bar in Washington, DC where the conversation amongst friends was quickly derailed because of an alert on a friend's phone about a mistake fare.  That's where the love affair with points and miles began.
