Earning Potential

You earn rewards when you make a purchase with your card, but certain categories mean you get bonus points or miles:

Travel

  • 10 miles per $1 spent on hotels and rental cars via Capital One Travel
  • 5x miles for flights booked via Capital One Travel
  • 2x miles for all other travel purchases
  • 5x points per $1 spent on travel via the Chase Travel portal
  • 3x points on vacation homes (platforms such as Airbnb and Vrbo)
  • 2x points on all other travel

Additional Bonus Categories and Earnings

  • 10,000-mile bonus at each card anniversary
  • 3x points on dining, gas, EV charging, select streaming services, and online grocery stores
  • 10% anniversary points bonus (discontinued for cardmembers who apply after June 15, 2026. Those who applied before June 15 continue earning the bonus on eligible purchases through October 1, 2026, with the points awarded by January 31, 2027)

All Other Purchases

  • 2 miles per $1 spent
  • 1 point per $1 spent

The Capital One Venture X card earns well on travel purchases via Capital One Travel. However, additional purchases, including travel purchased outside of the portal, earn 2x miles. This card is perfect for spending in nonbonus areas, including department stores, toy stores, clothing stores, and shops like Sephora or Target, thanks to its strong 2x points on all purchases.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred card also earns well on travel purchases via Chase Travel, and it offers 3x earnings for dining, streaming services, gas, EV charging, vacation homes, and online grocery stores, which could be better if you tend to spend a lot in these categories.

If you spend a lot in these categories, the Chase Sapphire Preferred card may be a better choice from an earning perspective. However, the 1 point per $1 spent on all other purchases may be a key factor in whether the card offers better bottom-line value than the 2 miles per $1 on all other purchases with the Capital One Venture X card, if most of your spending falls in this category.

Shopping Benefits and Protections

Shopping benefits can save you money or help you earn better rewards on your purchases, while protections can provide coverage if you experience a covered loss involving an eligible purchase made with your card.

Here are the shopping benefits and protections that come with the Capital One Venture X card and the Chase Sapphire Preferred card:

  • Purchase security and purchase protection: Purchase an eligible item with your card, and if that item is damaged or stolen within the first 120 days from the purchase date, you could receive up to $500 per item and $10,000 per account with the Chase Sapphire Preferred card. You could get up to $10,000 per item and $50,000 per year with the Capital One Venture X card.
  • Extended Warranty: Eligible items purchased with your card that have a manufacturer’s warranty of 3 years or less receive an additional 1 year of coverage.

In addition to the overlapping benefits and protections mentioned above, each card offers its own collection of benefits:

Capital One Venture X Card

  • Cell phone protection: Pay your monthly cell phone bill with your card and receive coverage for theft or damage up to $800 per claim. There is a $50 deductible per claim and a limit of 2 claims per 12-month period.
  • Return protection: If the merchant doesn’t accept the return of an eligible item purchased with your card within 90 days of the purchase date, you could receive up to $300 per item, with a maximum of $1,000 per account.

Chase Sapphire Preferred Card

  • Chase Offers: Sign in to your online card account and review offers to earn statement credits for specific purchases.
  • The Shops at Chase: Shop via The Shops at Chase shopping portal and receive bonus earnings for each purchase.

Annual Fees and Authorized Users

The cost of card ownership is an important factor to consider when selecting a travel rewards card. Annual fees can add up, and if you need to add authorized users, the fees to do so can increase the annual cost of the card.

Here’s how the Capital One Venture X card and Chase Sapphire Preferred card compare in this category:

Annual Fees

The Capital One Venture X card charges an annual fee of $395, while the Chase Sapphire Preferred card charges $95.

Authorized Users

The Chase Sapphire Preferred card doesn’t charge for authorized users and has no set limit. The Capital One Venture X card lets you add up to 4 authorized users for no additional fee.

Hot Tip:

If you take advantage of benefits and statement credits on either card, you can easily offset the annual fees.

Final Thoughts

The Capital One Venture X card and the Chase Sapphire Preferred card are both excellent travel rewards cards. However, if you’re applying for your first travel rewards card, you may want to consider the Chase Sapphire Preferred card, which comes with a lower annual fee.

However, if you can afford the $395 annual fee, the Capital One Venture X card can be a great way to not only accrue valuable rewards but improve the quality of your travel with perks like lounge access.

Getting both cards could be right for someone who wants the flexibility to earn both Capital One miles and Chase Ultimate Rewards points and is savvy enough to use all the cards’ credits to offset both annual fees. If you do have both cards, make sure to maximize the bonus categories on the Chase Sapphire Preferred card and put nonbonus category spend on your Capital One Venture X card to earn 2x on everything.
