Those working toward AAdvantage elite status with American Airlines can add a valuable tool to their wallets that will make things easier: the Citi® / AAdvantage® Globe™ Mastercard®.

This mid-tier card from Citi and American Airlines has a $350 annual fee and a handful of benefits, like early boarding, lounge passes, and complimentary checked bags. While the card offers several interesting statement credits, the perk most interesting to those chasing elite status is the Flight Streak bonus.

Using Flight Streak, cardholders can get up to 15,000 bonus Loyalty Points each qualification year — yes, Loyalty Points, the sole metric you need to worry about for earning AAdvantage status year after year.

What is Flight Streak, and how can this feature of the AAdvantage Globe card help you earn status faster? Read on for the full details.

What Is Flight Streak?

Flight Streak is a benefit unique to the new AAdvantage Globe card. You won’t find it on any other credit cards in Citi’s portfolio of American Airlines credit cards.

Those with the AAdvantage Globe card can earn up to 15,000 bonus Loyalty Points toward AAdvantage elite status each qualification year, thanks to the Flight Streak benefit.

The way this benefit works is simple: You’ll earn 5,000 bonus Loyalty Points for every 4 qualifying American Airlines flights you take during a status qualification year, which runs from March through February each year. You can earn a maximum of 15,000 bonus Loyalty Points with Flight Streak in a qualification year. This requires taking 12 qualifying flights.

How Flight Streak Helps You Earn AA Elite Status

Earning status with American Airlines requires earning Loyalty Points. The number of flights you take or how far they go doesn’t matter; all that matters is Loyalty Points.

Presently, you’ll earn AAdvantage status with the following number of Loyalty Points, based on the qualification year from March through the following February each year:

Factoring in the 15,000 Loyalty Points you can get from Flight Streak and the AAdvantage Globe card, here’s how much this benefit reduces your status qualification needs:

  • AAdvantage Gold: 37.5% lower
  • AAdvantage Platinum: 20% lower
  • AAdvantage Platinum Pro: 12% lower
  • AAdvantage Executive Platinum: 7.5% lower

Clearly, Flight Streak is most impactful when reaching AA’s lowest status tier, Gold, as you can accomplish 37.5% of the progress needed for this tier just from the Flight Streak benefit — ignoring the Loyalty Points you’ll also be earning from the flights themselves, the credit card spending for your daily needs, and the fact you probably paid for those AA flights with the AAdvantage Globe card.

The Flight Streak benefit alone can’t catapult you into the upper rungs of AA elite status, but it can be a useful tool when it’s combined with other methods for earning Loyalty Points.

Along with earning status from Loyalty Points, AA members can earn Loyalty Point Rewards. These choice benefits are available starting at 15,000 Loyalty Points in each qualification year — exactly the number of Loyalty Points you can earn from Flight Streak. At the 15,000 tier, you get Group 5 priority boarding for the rest of the status year and can choose 1 of the following:

  • Personalized luggage tag
  • 1,000 bonus Loyalty Points
  • Priority privileges and Group 4 boarding for a single trip
  • 5 Preferred Seat coupons to use on upcoming flights
Hot Tip:

The AAdvantage Globe card can help you earn elite status in another way. It’s possible to earn American Airlines status through credit card spending. You’ll earn 1 Loyalty Point per eligible mile earned on your card, which comes from the base rate earned on purchases. Essentially, you’ll earn 1 Loyalty Point for every $1 you spend on the card, helping you get closer to the next status tier from your daily spending.

Final Thoughts

The mid-tier AAdvantage Globe card offers a unique benefit not available on other American Airlines credit cards. With the Flight Streak benefit, cardholders can earn up to 15,000 bonus Loyalty Points each year, maxed out by taking 12 qualifying flights.

This benefit alone isn’t enough to qualify for even the lowest tier (Gold) of AA elite status. However, it can give you a considerable boost on top of your flying activity each year. Combined with the other things you’re doing to earn Loyalty Points, this is a valuable tool that makes the AAdvantage Globe card attractive for anyone who’s serious about earning status with American Airlines.
