Why Would You Want to Earn 100k Points?

SPG Starpoints are among the most versatile points out there. They can help you book hotel stays, flights, and even train tickets.

You can book free nights at Starwood properties for as little as 2,000 points for a Category 1 hotel during the weekend. You can also transfer SPG Starpoints to one of their airline partners — there are more than 30, many of which transfer at a 1:1 ratio. Even better, when you transfer a chunk of 20,000 SPG Starpoints to an airline, you’ll receive a 5,000-mile bonus.

You can even transfer points to Amtrak so you can ride the rails for your next vacation.

No matter how you decide to redeem your SPG points, there’s no question that the bigger your points balance, the more flexibility you will have. Let’s take a look at how you can begin to stockpile Starpoints!

1. Use a Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card

There are 2 ways to earn Starpoints with co-branded cards provided by American Express. These points will be earned on top of the points you earn for being a Starwood Preferred Guest member:

  • Pay for your SPG and Marriott hotel stays to earn 2X points per dollar
  • Make other purchases to earn 1X points per dollar

When you take advantage of Starwood Preferred Guest credit card sign-up bonuses offered to new cardholders, you’ll be surprised how quickly you accrue points!

Depending on the current offer, you may earn 25,000 points after spending $3,000-$5,000 on purchases during the first 3 months you have the card. Points can take up to 8 weeks to post to your account, but they generally post within days of your credit card statement closing.

These cards are the best way to earn SPG Starpoints.

2. Use Marriott Credit Cards

Earlier, we mentioned that the merger between Starwood and Marriott means you can transfer points between the programs. Well, that includes points earned with the co-branded Marriott credit cards provided by Chase.

The transfer ratio is 3 Marriott points to 1 Starpoint. While that ratio might not seem like a great deal, that’s not necessarily the case — especially when it comes to booking some amazing Starwood properties.

3. Stay at SPG and Marriott Properties

It probably doesn’t surprise you that one of the best ways to earn SPG Starpoints is by booking rooms at SPG branded properties. The recent merger with Marriott means it also pays to stay at Marriott properties.

In addition to earning Starpoints for your stays, you’ll get closer to elite status each time you stay at a Starwood property. With SPG elite status, you can earn 1X to 4X bonus Starpoints per $1 spent for Starwood stays.

It takes 10 stays or 25 nights in a year to become a Gold Preferred Guest, and 25 stays or 50 nights to become a Platinum Preferred Guest. Unlike most hotel loyalty programs, Starwood Preferred Guest lets you earn elite status even when you pay for your stay with an award.

Each of the co-branded Starwood credit cards also provides 2 stay and 5-night credits per calendar year. If you have both the personal and business versions of the card, that means you’ll have 4 stays and 10 nights to start the year. You can also earn SPG Gold status if you spend $30,000 on your co-branded Starwood card.

With Gold status, you will receive 250 bonus points for many of your stays at Starwood properties (125 bonus points at Aloft, Element, and Four Points properties).

Make sure you link your SPG and Marriott accounts since your status level with one will be matched with the other. If you are SPG Gold that means you are Marriott Gold, which can get you lounge access at some Marriott properties.

If you have the Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express, you will also receive Club Lounge access at Sheraton properties to make your stay even more enjoyable.

Don’t forget: using your card at Starwood and Marriott hotels also earns you 2X points per dollar.

Hot Tip: Not only does Uber offer Starpoints when you book a ride, but they offer bonus points if you are staying at an SPG property when ordering an Uber.

4. Book Flights With Delta

Another reason to earn Starwood Preferred Guest elite status is the Crossover Rewards program with Delta Airlines.

As a Platinum or Gold Preferred Guest member with SPG, you earn 1X Starpoint per $1 spent on all eligible Delta flights. Platinum Preferred Guests also get a free checked bag, priority check-in and boarding, and complimentary upgrades (these are rare).

The benefits work both ways. SkyMiles Medallion members (Diamond, Platinum, Gold, and Silver) earn 1X Delta mile per $1 for eligible Starwood stays, plus benefits including late check-out and complimentary in-room internet access.

5. Earn Starpoints and Save the Planet

A simple way to earn 500 points per night on a minimum 2-night stay is to decline housekeeping service.

The Make a Green Choice sustainability program allows guests to earn 500 points (for 3 nights in a row) when opting out of housekeeping. Points cannot be earned on the last night of a stay.

Just tell the hotel you’d like to participate at check-in or place the Make a Green Choice hanger on the outside doorknob of your room by 2 a.m. to earn your points!

Using Those 100k+ Starwood Preferred Guest SPG Points

Have you thought of what you would do with 100,000 Starpoints? We developed a guide filled with tons of great ideas to help you redeem your points. For example, transfer SPG Starpoints to airline partners so you can:

  • Fly First Class to South Africa from the U.S.:  Redeem 70,000 Alaska miles for an amazing Cathay Pacific first class flight to South Africa. Technically, it’s only first class to Hong Kong, and the flight from Hong Kong to Johannesburg is in Cathay Pacific business class (which still includes a lie-flat seat with direct aisle access and great service). You can even book a stopover to visit Hong Kong for a few days. If you’re really adventurous, you could book a stopover of a week or more to see other countries in the region too.
  • Round-trip to Milan in Emirates First Class: For 100,000 Japan Airlines miles, you can book Emirates first class from New York City (JFK) to Milan (MXP). There isn’t another airline in the world with the glitz of Emirates, so live it and up and enjoy your shower in the sky!
  • Experience The Apartments from NYC to Abu Dhabi: Use 115,000 American AAdvantage miles to book the first class Apartments as part of a luxury trip to the Middle East.
